Hi Joey- I was wondering if you wouldn’t mind putting out one more press release to help in the sale of our 2016 Rotary calendars? I have attached a revised version of the last one I sent you. Thanks so much! Because of the last press release you put on GMG, I sold more that 15 out of state (mostly to NY). Thanks again, and have very Happy Holidays-
Cheers-

Promoting Optimal Wellness for Body, Mind and SpiritPromoting Optimal Wellness for Body, Mind and Spirit

The Holiday Season is meant to be joyful, but If you feel added stress, you are not alone. The holidays can also bring up negative thoughts and feelings and increased stress due to added commitments, financial strains, travel, and increased grief and sadness over those we have loved and lost. Spending time with others and focusing on positive memories from the past may help.

Minimize Stress for a Healthier Immune System. When we feel stressed and anxious, the adrenal glands release the hormone cortisol. Cortisol functions to reduce inflammation in the body, which is good, but over time, these efforts to reduce inflammation also suppress the immune system. Chronic stress results in high cortisol levels and reduces the body’s natural response to fight viruses and bacteria, making you more susceptible to colds and flu. Relaxation and adequate sleep help lower cortisol levels and support the body’s immune system.

boat on the beach

Hi Joe,

Not sure if this qualifies for a “human interest story” for the blog, but it’s kind of amazing that this little boat survived the 80 +miles between Casco bay and Coffins beach!

File this under it is a very small world….
My son and daughter-in-law were here for the weekend so we went for a walk on the beach by our house. Came on this boat which had washed ashore. The owner had his phone number on the boat so my son called him to say we found his boat on Coffins Beach in Gloucester. He is a 74 year old gentleman, lost the boat in a blow last summer in Casco Bay, Maine, and just happens to live down the street from them in Topsham, Maine! They are coming back for Christmas with my son’s  truck and will bring the boat back for their new friend!

The Rockport Christmas Tree Committee, now in its 117th year, is Rockport’s oldest ongoing tradition.

Started in the 1890’s by Rockport grocer Tim Sheehan, the custom of remembrance is carried on today. Members of the Rockport community 80 years of age and older, shut-ins, people with illnesses and others are remembered on Christmas Day with the delivery of a fruit basket and cookies. Residents of area senior housing, nursing homes and local hospitals receive a visit in the days before Christmas. Santa Claus himself visits residents of the Den Mar Nursing Home and presents each with a small basket of fruit and other goodies.

On Christmas morning in Dock Square, Santa arrives at 10:30 and gives all the town’s children a bag of goodies, in the tradition of the 1890’s.

Santa’s volunteer helpers will meet at Spiran Hall on Broadway at 7:00 PM on December 22 to pack the bags and baskets. On Christmas morning volunteers are welcome at Spiran Hall from 8:30-9:30 AM to deliver baskets. Generations of Rockporters have participated, all you need is a willingness to help, and a smile.

The Committee needs your help to continue this tradition. We rely solely on volunteers and donations. Donations may be mailed to the Rockport Christmas Tree Committee, %Doreen Carter, 2 Mary Helen Way, Rockport, MA 01966 or dropped off at Smith Ace Hardware & Lumber. Donations are tax deductible.

If you have a neighbor or friend who you feel should receive a basket, just let any committee member know, or leave a note with name and address at the Lumber desk at Smith Hardware and Lumber.

Committee members include Dana (Buddy) Woods, Jay Smith, Lisa Littlefield, Doreen Carter, Judy Harris, Mary Helen MacLeod, Linda Johnson, Janice Ramsden, April Beaton, Sally Frithsen, Ruth George, Andrea Ritchie, Chris Murch, Judy Bogage, Mary-Kathryn and Jeff Gray, Darlene Trumbour, Pat Brown, Roger Lesch, Nina Samoiloff, Toni Rowe, Bethany Brosnan and John Thompson.

A Council Order was submitted by Greg Verga and Melissa Cox on November 17 to begin the DISCUSSION regarding banning ‘checkout’ bags. After a less than warm reception at the first such discussion at the December 7 meeting of the Ordinance and Administration Committee and the email sent to all City Councilors by a bag industry lobbyist this page has been created to help spread the word.

You are encouraged to share your thoughts about a ban and also to share your photos that help illustrate the need for such a ban. You are also encouraged to reach out to the City Council members and let them know how you feel.

Holiday Delights @GloucesterStage Was Absolutely Fantastic!

img_20151212_162049.jpg

Director Heidi Dallin put on a clinic on how to showcase young acting skills bringing out incredible performances all the way around.  If your kid is interested in getting involved with acting and all of the rewards that come from the friendships that are developed throughout the process you’d be straight up crazy not to put them in Heidi’s hands at Gloucester Stage for her incredible youth Workshops and programming.

Pictured above our Alicia Unleashed’s daughter Talia in the lead as Ms Claus.  All of the performers did an outstanding job, I don’t know all their names but Niki Bogin’s daughter was a standout as well and the little one that stole the show- Ruby McElhenny who just absolutely crushed it in her role.   I wish I knew all the kid’s names to give them each and every one a high five but honestly they ALL did outstanding jobs.

I have no idea why there was only two performances, this should have played two weekends in a row with at least 4 shows.  It was a packed house with people standing in the aisles.

David Brooks and Co Just Cuckholded Every Other Lobster Trap Tree Community In The Nation

Another Year and Another Unanimous Decision For The Gloucester MA Lobster Trap Tree As The Without A Doubt Undisputed Heavyweight Champion of The World.

2015-12-12 16.55.11

While towns up in Maine are still going back to the same old tired plans trying to make their trees the tallest (by making them horribly disfigured Christmas Spikes Instead of Christmas Trees)  David Brooks and the Gloucester MA community once again made them all pale by comparison.  David Brooks and Gloucester MA is playing chess while Rockland Maine is playing checkers.  But after all these years and crushing their spirits with their horribly disfigured Christmas spikes and them using terrible Chinese sweat shop labor Christmas bows on their trees while Gloucester MA adorns their Lobster trap tree with hand painted buoys made by the angelic youth of  Gloucester.  But this year after the over the top outpouring of support, David Brooks decided to go 3 dimensional on their ass.

You don’t just experience the Gloucester Ma lobster trap tree from the outside, we built this shit so dope that you can actually enter inside the tree and the entire inside is adorned with the beautiful hand painted buoys as well.   They turned the Lobster trap tree game on it’s head.

Hilarious that they thought they could compete.  I feel bad for these other communities, I really do.  Just when they think they have a chance, along comes Brooks and Co just crushing their Christmas dreams.

In all seriousness, it’s nice that the other communities try  to compete and we wish them nothing but the best during this Christmas season.

Good luck next year, LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL!

Got Stress??

Stress 465cd4826004c9b136a5623d1de54d11You are not alone. And the Holiday Season can be an especially stressful time for many with added financial strain, grief and sadness over those we have loved and lost, and overwhelming, over-commitments.

According to the 2014 annual Stress in America™ survey by the American Psychological Association (APA) the Top 4 sources of stress are –

Money, Work, Family Responsibilities, and Health Concerns.

The APA study also found –

  •  72% of Americans reported feeling stressed about money at least some of the time during the past month.
  • 22% said that they experienced extreme stress about money during the past month
  • Parents, younger generations and lower-income households (less than $50,000.00 annual income) have higher stress than others overall
  • Some people are putting their health care needs on hold because of financial concerns.
