The O’Maley Innovation Middle School 2016 SAILS Club Lip Dub

On May 25th, over 600 students and staff of the O’Maley Innovation Middle School in Gloucester, MA came together to create a lip dub to celebrate the S.A.I.L.S. initiative that is underway at the school.

S.A.I.L.S. stands for Service, Acceptance, Integrity, Leadership and Success, and this is the third year the students have chosen a theme song to represent SAILS for the year and put together a lip dub to help promote and foster the SAILS values and to build a positive community.

This year they chose two songs: “Fight Song” by Rachel Platten, and “Shake It Off” by Taylor Swift.

IDRC June Eliminations Final Race Complete June 2016

IDRC June Eliminations

Final Race Complete June 2016
A spectacular race for rowers and fans at Niles Beach, Gloucester

Monday night the open division final race was held.  The race pitted two veteran International champs against to power house brothers.  There was a steady breeze blowing straight into the Niles.  Nick and Vito Giacalone line up in lane one against Jimmy Tarantino and Joe Cominelli in lane three.  The two boats slowly inched up to the starting line even and then it began.  Jimmy and Joe jumped out to a quick half boat lead.  About half way to the flag the Giacalone boys caught up.  From there it was a back and forth battle to the flag.  Jimmy and Joe banged the turn and came out with a slight lead.  But once again the younger brothers made a push and caught the veterans.  Both teams traded the lead all the way home.  About fifty yard from the finish line Jimmy and Joe made a little push and inched ahead over the Giacalone brothers to take the win by a little less than a boat.  It was a tremendous race by both teams.  Now Jimmy and Joe will be back in the boats practicing for the next race on June 18th at the State Fish Pier at 10 AM against the Canadian team.  Congrats go out the all the competitors in the eliminations and best of luck against the Canadians.

Friday 6/10 Meeting of the Gloucester Area Astronomy Club

June 8, 2016 ~ Michael Deneen

trifid

Friday night, 8:00 pm at the Lanesville Community Center is the June GAAC meeting, featuring a group of astrophotographers presenting some of their best work.

We’ll get to see a multitude of colorful pictures of all kinds of celestial objects, learn what each object is, what’s noteworthy about it, how big, how far, and we’ll find out a little bit about any challenges the photographers faced in getting the shot. All in all, this promises to be a terrific, informative and enjoyable night.

This annual program is always a favorite, so come early and grab a good seat, grab something good to eat, and enjoy a memorable night out at GAAC. Weather permitting we’ll even get to do a little observing of the first-quarter moon and a planet or two after the meeting.

The Gloucester Area Astronomy Club meets at the Lanesville Community Center in the Lanesville neighborhood of Gloucester MA, at 8:00 pm on the second Friday of every month, for presentations, discussions and activities related to observational astronomy. Thre is plenty of free parking, and there is no cost. For more info on the club see the website at http://gaac.us, the facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/GAACpage, or follow the club on twitter, @GAACster.

Seaside Garden Club presents The Art of Ikebana

Art of Ikebana

June 6, 2016 ~ kwillwerth

The Seaside Garden Club presents The Art of Ikebana – Ikebana Demonstration by Kaye Vosburgh on Tuesday, June 14th at the Manchester Community Center.  Doors open at 7:00 pm for a social time and the demonstration begins promptly at 7:30 pm.  Light refreshments will be served. All are welcome.Displaying Art of Ikebana.jpg

The Seaside Garden Club is pleased to announce that this program is supported by a grant from the Manchester Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency. The Local Cultural Council (LCC) is the largest grassroots cultural funding network in the nation supporting thousands of community-based projects in the arts, humanities, and sciences annually. The program promotes the availability of rich cultural experiences for every Massachusetts citizen. This grant enables the Seaside Garden Club to reach new audiences and provide quality programs that integrate the arts into community-based programs. http://www.massculturalcouncil.org

Ikebana is the Japanese art of flower arrangement. It is more than simply putting flowers in a container. It is a disciplined art form in which the arrangement is a living thing where nature and humanity are brought together. It is steeped in the philosophy of developing a closeness with nature.  Kaye will demonstrate 7 to 9 arrangements beginning with the arrangement that a new student would learn in class.  This classic style is similar to ikebana created hundreds of years ago.  The Sogetsu School of Ikebana is known for its creative and expressive designs.  Most of the program will be this contemporary style of ikebana that is popular in Japan today.

Kaye Vosburgh is a Sogetsu Ikebana teacher of the highest rank, Riji, as well as a Master Judge and Design Instructor for the National Garden Clubs.  She has won numerous medals and awards in the New England Spring Flower Show.  She teaches in New York where she used to live and in Massachusetts where she now resides.  She has demonstrated in New England, Central Atlantic Region, Florida and Ecuador.  She has traveled to Japan on several occasions for conferences and lessons at the Sogetsu School.  Her favorite activity is sharing creative moments with other designers and students.

This is the Seaside Garden Club’s final program for the year.  Membership is now open for the 2016/2017 season ($25).  The Seaside Garden Club is a group of fun, active, civic-minded and hands-on gardeners.  We invite you to become a member and enjoy our monthly programs which feature interesting guest speakers, creative workshops and a chance to socialize with fellow gardeners.  The Seaside Garden Club meets the 2nd Tuesday of the Month (September through June) and are always looking for new members.  Visit our blog https://seasidegardenclub.wordpress.com/ or like us on Facebook: Seaside Garden Club Facebook
