I am a live music advocate and seek to share the news of bands playing at local venues in my home town. Being drawn to blues mostly but embrace all kinds of music. One does not have to go over the bridge to hear some real fine tunes, however there are some bands that draw you elsewhere. I hope this blog is a good use to you as it is to me.
Enjoy,
Joanne

The Yiddish theater developed as a uniquely American art form in the Eastern European Jewish immigrant community in New York City and other urban centers, during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It formed the foundation of the American dramatic and musical theatre as we know them today.
In this weekly gathering, open to the public, we will explore the swift flowering and decline of Yiddish theatre and read plays aloud (in English). Readings will include classics by notable writers such as S. Ansky, Jacob Gordin and Sholem Aleichem, as well “lost” gems that have been eclipsed by time. This weekly workshop takes place at TAA, and will be open to the public.
If you are interested in joining or have any questions, please be in touch!
I’ve just about recovered from last week’s controlled explosion, so I’m ready to jump off that fiscal cliff once again to present to you that rat-a-tat rascal of the surf ‘n’ turf guitar: Mr. Bobby Davis. It’s gonna be great night as we gather Bob and his wish list of heavy artillery in the form of Mr. Dave Brown, guitarist xtroidinaire, and Dave Mattacks, the Atomic Clock. If I miss a beat, he’ll find it. Rheumer has it that it’s someone’s special birthday (not mine), so we’re gonna pull out all the stops. Come and confess all your sins!
And don’t forget: The following Thursday sees the annual return of the saxophone solstice featuring the one and only “Sax” Gordon Beadle, the grim reaper of all cutting contests.
And, if you’re under employed, why not come down to the Rose Baker Senior Center next Monday. The Good Old Salty Jazz Band holds sway from 1 to 3 pm. Get your kicks on Rt. 127!
Bob Davis
Dave Brown
Dave Mattacks
A guaranteed good time tonight for sure!
Have a listen here to Bobby Davis.

Julie Cleveland, Owner/Piano Instructor
Cape Ann Piano Studio, Gloucester, MA
On teaching adult learners: “What I love doing is helping students pick up where they left off at the piano, sometimes decades earlier. One of the greatest pleasures I get from teaching piano is sharing the joy of my students returning to the piano, after many years away. Or helping [adult] students discover the joys of learning to play the piano – often a dream they’ve had sometimes for years – for the very first time.”
On teaching kids: “I love it when some of my youngest students come in for their weekly lesson and are so excited to show me what they’ve learned at the piano, that sometimes they even forget to say ‘Hello, Miss Julie’ as they charge over to the piano to play me their songs! :-)”

Hello everyone!
Wednesday, January 9th
Special Guest: CHARLEE BIANCHINI!
It was totally unplanned. My wife and I walked into the Landing in Manchester on our way home from chasing errands
“up the line”, as we like to say. This girl was playing and we
had never seen her before. Her name was Charlee Bianchini.
We were enchanted. Her music was gentle and sweet. The
room was jammed and everyone was singing along. Cape
Ann’s reputation for having one of the coolest music scenes
on the Eastern Seaboard is completely safe and intact. ~ Fly
Taken from Charlee’s website: http://www.charleebeth.com/ Growing up in a house filled with folk music and bluegrass, Charlee has been singing since she could remember. She started playing the guitar when she was five years old. After learning the basics, she chose to pursue classical guitar. Among others, she has studied with the accomplished, Anthony Weller, and she continued studying both classical and folk/rock techniques at Skidmore College where she attended undergraduate school. She is currently studying finger-picking, and different techniques to accompany her singing. Her music could be described as acoustic, folk/indie-rock. Her favorite artists include, Jeff Buckley, Alison Krauss, Bon Iver, Nina Simone, Keb Mo, The Talking Heads, Bonnie Raitt, Adele, and Brandi Carlisle, among so many others. Let’s break in the new year with a bang. Please welcome the debut of the remnants of “A” Train, that Rockport powerhouse of swing and rhythm. Featuring the father/son pairing of Rik and Alec Razdan, both saxophone swamis and scientific ubermenches. They’ll be dragging along their longtime piano jackhammer, Mr. John Hyde and dedicated drumbler, Mr. David “Doc” Vincent kicking and screaming to the stage to regale you with rhythm and honk, honk, honk. It’ll be like 4000 geese flying thru your head. Be prepared to shake your tootsies as we jump into the cesspool of swing without holding our breath. EMTs will be standing by.
And, don’t forget, next Thu. the10th, we’ll be cerebrating The 80th birthday of that magnificent maestro of surf mayhem: Mr. Johnny Carwash (aka Bob Davis). To beef up the festivities, we’ve added Mr. Dave Brown and Mr. David Mattacks to the fire. This is going to be a first. You might have to change your underwear, so, bring a spare.
But wait! There’s more! Following in the footsteps of aural gore, The17th sees the annual return of Mr. Gordon “Sax” Beadle Like the winter solstice , we’ll be sacrificing on the altar of the great muddy boot, asking forgiveness and taking no prisoners. Stretchers will bring in First time guitarist, Mr. Matt Stubbs, wanted for murdering ear cells , and Mr. Chris Ravelli, drummer for Roomful of Blooze. This is the greatest night of the year. If you’ve never seen Gordie, you should be ashamed of yourself. You won’t wanna eat after hearing this guy.
And, thanks to all you groovy kate and kittens for supporting live music thru out the year. Not just at the Rhumb Line on Thursdays but all over town, every night, everywhere. We all thank you and wish you all the very best for the coming year.

I hope you all had a lovely Christmas/Hanukkah/Festivus/solstice.
I surely did. Nora and I put a lot of miles on the family car as we performed in this year’s Christmas Revels, 16 shows celebrating the season with an Irish emigration theme. Aside from being a big success for the non-profit Revels, Inc., it was a total gas to be on stage with talented friends old and new in one of the nicest performance halls around, and to share it with my daughter. It was a big commitment for her, including missing several holiday traditions in our little seaside village of Rockport: the Christmas tree lighting, caroling parties, etc.
As the memories of late nights, bleary-eyed travel, a grueling performance schedule and neglected family are supplanted by the echoes of fabulous choral music and shared traditions with new friends, I am happy to report I will return to my regular Wednesday gig (7-9 pm) at ALCHEMY in Gloucester, beginning January 2.
If you seek a thoughtfully prepared menu, excellent drinks, cozy atmosphere and my goofy antics, I think you’ll enjoy it:
I’d like to thank Chelsea Berry, Charlee Bianchini, Joe Cardoza and Renée Dupuis for minding the musical store while I was away.
Finally, I am grateful for all of you who came to performances and supported live music this past year. It really is a joy to sing for you!
John
Here is a slide show of many scenes from the production, set to our recording of “Deck The Hall”. It’s hard to describe the intense feelings of community, mutual admiration, affection and sheer fun we all had as cast members. Thank you, Revels!

Tonight ~ The Rhumb Line 9:30
They are a young lively bluesgrass funkyphsycodelic fun band.
A real pleasure to hear and watch…… seriously.
I happened upon this band a while ago. Being so excited to fit in three bands in one night and hearing just about an hour of each. These young men blew my mind. After reviewing their music I got goosebumps all over again, as when I first heard them. They are totally a must see band.
Listen to the link below and you will see/hear exactly why.
