ORLEANS: The Show Must Go On!

THE SHOW MUST GO ON!
Orleans, in its 40th year of life – WILL PERFORM
North Shore Music Theater
Friday, August 31 – 8pm
“We mourn the sudden passing of Larry Hoppen.  However, we will undertake to
finish out the rest of the year’s schedule in Larry’s honor.  The touring band now
consists of mainstays Lance Hoppen, Lane Hoppen, Fly Amero, Charlie Morgan –
plus returning co-founder, John Hall.  Please keep us in your hearts and prayers.”
~ Lance Hoppen

By now, pretty much everyone knows about the loss of my dear friend and band
mate of so many, many years, Larry Hoppen.  His contributions to the world of
music and to contemporary pop culture will stand throughout history, never to be
forgotten.  It occurs to me, having invited him to so many intimate shows here in
the northeast over the years, Larry was a friend to a number of you folks as well.
We all must now share in our grief, hold ourselves together and be ever thankful
for our lives and for what we have.
But it is the band’s resolve to continue – at least through 2012 – to carry out our
2012 touring schedule in Larry’s honor, the NSMT at the end of this month being
no exception.  Co-founding Orleans member, John Hall has come onboard to join
us on the trail… and numerous pop chart luminaries have made generous offers
of availability for surprise walk-ons and sit-ins along the way.  No way of telling
who may emerge from the wings on these remaining shows.

So, this message is basically in response to those who have been asking, “What’s
next?  Where do you guys go from here?”  The answer is the same as it always
has been in the entertainment business – the show must go on!  Or, perhaps an
even better reply may be found in the words of Larry Hoppen himself…

Mile21,The Runaround, Allen Estes, Marina Evans and Charlie Bianchini all in one night at The Harbor Loop Concert~This Thursday August 9th.

Mile 21:

http://www.myspace.com/mile21music#{%22ImageId%22%3A17925499}

Formed in the fall of 2000, Mile 21 established itself as a seven piece
punk/ska band with influences of reggae and hip hop ranging from the
Mighty Mighty Bosstones to the Wu Tang Clan. After taking a hiatus from
shows in 2003 Mile 21 returned with a new sound that incorporated
catchy hornlines, melodic riffs and influencial lyrical patterns.

Over the years Mile 21 has been the featured band at several festivals
and shows in the NorthEast, playing at clubs and venues such as CBGB’s,
The Knitting Factory, The Empress Ballroon, The Middle East Club, The
Webster Theater, and Harper’s Ferry. Influenced by a uniquely wide
variety of artists, bands and styles, Mile 21 Band maintains a fresh,
self-owned sound. The list of those owed credit and notice are an
extensive group from Bob Marley & the Wailers to the Bosstones, John
Coltraine to Wu-Tang Clan, The Toasters to The Skatellites, and B.B.
King to Steel Pulse. Each of these as well as many more have offered
styles, sounds and inspiration for these 8 players to put every ounce
of energy and heart into the success of Mile 21 Band.

After a few EPs and Demos Mile 21 has released a new 3-song Demo that
truly captures their ska/roots/reggae styles. This new music expresses
their desire to release socially conscious music while maintaining a
very pop element that appeals to a wide range of people. Since their
release of Nine Ivy Days in 2005 Mile 21 Band has opened for such acts
as The Toasters, The Planet Smashers, Toots and the Maytals, Sean Paul,
Badfish, and Morgan Heritage. Mile 21 Band released its first
self-titled album under Megalith Records in 2007 and is currently
working on a new release that captures the influence and growth of
their 2010 hiatus. The band’s 2012 return welcomes the 2007 lineup
which includes Carlos Menezes Jr. on Trombone, Mike Francis on lead
vocals/guitar, Keith Amero on bass, Steve Russo on Drums, Mike Lentini
on saxophone, Mike Goulart on lead guitar, Julian O’Brien on keys, and
Shawn Lowe on Trumpet.

Drowning victim recovery off of front beach in Rockpor

Ok so this is the latest 411 on the drowning. Corroborated by two Rockport Policemen. 23 year old Korean National college student visiting Rockport with a crew of fellow international college students from many different countries. His friends didn’t report him missing immediately because they thought he went to get some food. At around 6PM I was sitting on the beach and noticed the Rockport Harbor Master boat patrolling in a back and forth search pattern. I also noticed two cops standing on the railing over looking the beach. I mentioned to two ladies sitting next to me that the Harbor Master boat patrolling like that was unusual, in fact I hadn’t seen that in my two years here. I heard the guy standing on the bow of the boat say “There it is”. He jumped off the bow into about 3-4 feet of waist deep water between the raft and the shore and grabbed something. At that point 4 policemen came on the beach and cleared the beach. So I moved up to the railing. i then overheard one of the policemen radio in and say “Contact the medical examiner’s office”. The fellow in the water dragged the body so that it was on the far side of the boat away from the beach. i could see the two people on the boat pull the body onto the boat. Then the boat sped off towards Granite Pier. That is the point I took this photograph.

Dave Sag’s Blues Party To Host John Rankin @ The Rhumb Line This Thursday

Well, kids, it’s about that time again. The mad rush of summer visitors at my house has got me in a tizzy and despite visits by the FBI and DEA, the madness continues with the arrival of Mr. John Rankin from New Orleans. He’ll be arriving soon with his muddy boots and resonator guitar to assail you with the entire catalogue of N.O.roots music. Educator, emulator, excavator, this guy does it all. And sings, too.
John has been so busy, what with performances, guitar workshops and teaching, that I’m so glad the New Orleans cops have let him have the opportunity to flee the state and come up here for some much needed community service. I promised to send him back on time.Put up my home as collateral, too.
On drums ,we’ll be sporting Mr. Andrew Jones, who’s been furiously trying to learn the N.O. style of sloppy groove, and with all of us drooling, it’s gonna be a mess. Bring paper towels!
And don’t forget: Monday afternoon from 1 to 3 the Good Old Salty Jazz Band hits the dirt at the Rose Baker Senior Center. It’s free, for all of you who are economically challenged. Mr. Rankin will be playing with us, too. You don’t know what you’re missing. It’s better than “Cats”.

Cape Ann Talent Will Be In Full Force at The Weekend’s Festival By The Sea

This Saturday’s Festival By The Sea is expected to draw crowds of visitors excited to experience the best of the Cape Ann art, music, and food scenes in downtown Manchester by the Sea. With art and food vendors extending from Town Hall Common, through town center and down to Masconomo Park, there will be something for everyone. From painters and photographers to jewelers and crafters, visitors will have the opportunity to shop the local arts at a variety of price points.

While taking in the work of local artists, visitors will be treated to a special afternoon of live music on 2 stages. The Town Hall stage will feature soloists and duos including Charlee Bianchini, Janice Fullman with Izzy Attenborough, Bradley Royds, Joe Wilkins, and local music staple, Dan King. According to Co-chair and Musical Director, Chris Langathianos, “each musician will play about a 45 minute set.” He added, “we really wanted the opportunity to feature as much of the local talent as possible. I don’t think a lot of people recognize how lucky we are to live on the North Shore – Cape Ann, in particular. If you love live music, you’d be hard pressed to find anywhere else in New England with the depth of talent that we have on Cape Ann.”

The waterfont stage in Masconomo Park with feature a separate lineup of musicians, including Henry Allen & The New Swingset, Just Like Newman, The Dejas, Marina Evans with Jack Tomiaolo, and Chris Phillips. The day will end with an extra special, 2-hour finalé concert by The Chelsea Berry Band from 6 to 8pm.

Speaking of the evening’s finalé concert, Langathianos said, “This is one of the things that the Festival committee really set out to do when we created this event – we wanted to cap it off with a special, family-friendly, musical event in Masconomo Park. We were very fortunate to sign on Chelsea Berry and her band fresh off of opening up for Chris Isaak at The North Shore Music Theatre last month. She is a gifted songwriter and performer and she is backed by a top notch band that includes, Michael Thomas Doyle, Pete Iannitto, Michael Feingold, and Renee Dupuis.”

The Festival came together pretty quickly when it was announced that The Manchester Arts’ Festival was taking a hiatus in 2012. A group of local residents came together and formed a committee to explore creating a new event that would bring visitors to town to support local businesses while shopping from local artists and hearing the music of local musicians. With the support of the Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce, Festival By The Sea was born.

Co-Chair, Michael Storella said, “we felt that a summer festival in Manchester was essential, not just for the businesses in town, but it has also become a summer rite of passage. We were troubled by the thought of a summer without an event like this in town.” After some quick preliminary planning and a speedy approval by the Board of Selectment, a date was set and the wheels were in motion. Storella added, “we were able to get things moving along quickly thanks to the instant support of Singleton Plumbing & Heating, who immediately stepped up with a generous donation to get the event off the ground. That coupled with the support of The Chamber of Commerce and local businesses made this event possible.”

The event is scheduled to take place on Saturday, August 4th from 11am to 8pm. Artists will be set up from 11am to 6pm and from 6 to 8pm, action will shift to Masconomo Park for the Chelsea Berry concert. Event maps and music schedules will be available at local shops at the end of the week or by visiting www.facebook.com/festivalbythesea.

Help me cure those post-swing blues…

Greetings:

It was an amazing weekend at the Shalin Liu Performance Center in Rockport. The Cape Ann Big Band blew away the crowd during two sold-out shows with their energy and swing. It was a privilege to sing with them and share in that incredible energy.

So now, Monday morning, I’ve got to figure out a way to cure these dreadful withdrawal symptoms. I hope you can join me this Wednesday from 7-9 at Alchemy in Gloucester. Super fretmaster Flynn Cohen will be joining me, and I look forward to that.

Friday, it’s rock and roll at a private party on Eastern Point with Human Jukebox: Dave Koen, Kevin Levesque, myself and the inimitable Gordon Baird.

Saturday, I play two sets at 11am and 1pm with friend and fiddler Larry Young at the Manchester Public Library during (but not affiliated with) the Festival-by-the-Sea.

I’d love to see you!

John

Thank you, everyone!

Larry Hoppen & Fly Amero strike the final chord of Orleans’ timeless classic, “Dance With Me”.

I would like to extend a personal note of thanks to each and every person who came to my weekly
Rhumb Line performance last week.  It was an overwhelming show of support from a loving community
that is utterly precious to me in every possible way.  Larry Hoppen was my bandmate, dear friend of more
than 32 years and, of course, singer of the Orleans mega-hits “Dance With Me”, “Still The One” & “Love
Takes Time”.  But he was more than just that.  He was the proud father of two beautiful, intelligent and
uniquely talented teenaged daughters, and a devoted humanitarian on a global scale.  Larry left the
planet on the afternoon of Tuesday, July 24, and I have been literally reeling ever since.  But, I am not
alone.  Not with you here by my side.  I love you all.  Thank you from the bottom of my heart. ~ Fly
