Peter Van Ness New Novel, The Faithful, set in Cambridge, Beverly & Gloucester

Peter writes:

Even though Vickie and I have lived in Florida for almost 3 years (canโ€™t believe itโ€™s been that long!) we still follow www.GoodMorningGloucester.com

You may have seen Joann Mackenzieโ€™s article about my new book, โ€œThe Faithfulโ€ in the GDT today. She calls it a โ€œDan Brownish conspiracy reminiscent of a high tech The Da Vinci Codeโ€ adding that itโ€™s โ€œdeeply humanitarian, even romanticโ€ and โ€œIf you are a 21st century digital citizen, then fasten your seatbelts, youโ€™re in for a ride.โ€

Most of the action in โ€œThe Faithfulโ€ takes place in Cambridge, with scenes in Beverly and Gloucester (at Good Harbor Beach).

Iโ€™d be honored to send you a copy, but I donโ€™t have your mailing address. Can you send it to me?

Vickie and I are thrilled that youโ€™re giving The Cut some love. Theyโ€™ve done everything right in our view. They used Jon Coretto, whom I suggested to install their extraordinary sound system. You might remember him from this GMG post 10 years ago https://goodmorninggloucester.com/2014/04/04/big-city-concert-sound-just-down-the-road-in-beverly/.  And they hired Jeff Johnson, the guy who did sound for 9 Wallis and our 2020 outdoor shows in Manchester.

Please give our love to Gloucester!

WINE TASTING WITH ANTHONY SCIARAPPA OF CAROLINA WINES

Anthony Sciarappa, from Carolina wines, has been in the industry for several years, coming to Carolina wines from years as a restaurant chef. He therefore is well-versed in food and wine pairing, so feel free to ask his opinion on whatever you are preparing for your next culinary feast. Carolina is a division of Martignetti and carries specialty portfolios from some of the great importers, including Kermit Lynch and Louis Dressner.

 WINES

Jadix Picpoul, Languedoc, France, Varietal 100% Picpoul, Alc. 12%

Jadix is an extraordinary white wine made from the Indigenous Picpoul grape in the Picpoul de Pinet region in the South of France. The vineyard is located in an area stretching along the string of lakes that make up the Thau lagoon and bound by the ancient fishing villages of Agde, Pรฉzenas, and Sรจte. These โ€œmarineโ€ vineyardsโ€ are among the oldest in the Mediterranean. Because of their prized location close to the sea, the vineyards are planted on a plateau of fossilized oyster beds, limestone, gravel, and quartz soil. They benefit from a sunny and dry climate tempered with the breezes from the Mediterranean. An elaborate subsoil network of freshwater and saltwater conduits under the vineyards nourishes the vines and contributes to the unique flavor of Jadix. Picpoul, which means โ€œlip stingerโ€ because of its naturally high acidic level, is a fruity, fresh wine with delicious and slightly saline flavors. It is often described as the โ€œMuscadet of the Languedoc-Roussillon.โ€ The grapes are harvested at night to retain flavor and freshness. In the cellar, cold maceration and fermentations at low temperatures, along with aging on the lees, take place to add smoothness and complexity.  Certified Vegan, using organic practices. Clear yellow color with green highlights. Intense, fruity bouquet of citrus and exotic fruits. Fresh in the mouth with good acidity and the unique hint of salinity typical of Picpoul. Serve chilled with fish, shellfish, and Mediterranean dishes. $14.99

Jean-Maurice Raffault Chinon Rose, 2023, Touraine, Loire, France. Varietal 100% Cabernet Franc, Alc. %13

Jean-Maurice Raffault’s famed Chinon estate is located in the central Loire valley, near Tours, and is the northernmost French red wine appellation. The family has been vignerons in Chinon since 1693 and the estate now comprises 40 hectares spread over 6 communes. The estate is now run by his son Rodolphe Raffault who obtained a postgraduate degree in Chemistry in Tours and then obtained a diploma in Oenology from the University of Dijon. After taking his degree, Rodolphe spent 2 years in Burgundy as an intern, followed by another stage at a Loire Co-op. In 1997, he joined his father, Jean-Maurice, and has been in charge of the vineyards and winemaking since the 2000 Vintage. Rodolphe is proud to perpetuate his family’s heritage and is particularly motivated to continue his late father’s innovation of single-site bottling in Chinon. Rodolphe Raffault is evolving his vineyards toward sustainable and organic viticulture. This rose is refreshing, with flavors of red currant, raspberry, pomegranate, citrus, and cherry fruit emanating from the glass. The finish is long, fresh, and succulent. The wine pairs well with a wide variety of food, including Asian cuisine, grilled fish, and spicy foods. $17.99

Hedges CMS Sauvignon Blanc, Yakima Valley, Washington

Varietals: 78% Sauvignon Blanc, 20% Chardonnay, 2% Marsanne, Alc. 14%

In 1989, Tom and Anne-Marie Hedges embarked on a journey that would span generations. They purchased 50 acres on Red Mountain in the Yakima Valley and planted 40 acres of Bordeaux grape varieties. This was the beginning of a family affair in wine production. Their daughter, Sarah Hedges-Goedhart, now leads as the head winemaker, and their son, Christopher Hedges, manages the operations. In 2008, they embraced biodynamic farming, and in 2015, they proudly released the first biodynamic Cabernet Sauvignon in Washington. The Hedges CMS Sauvignon Blanc, a testament to their dedication, is a wine with a pleasant aromatic character. It is a symphony of zesty citrus fruit, white peach, and gooseberry, a touch of dried herbs, pineapple, and pear. Lean, crisp, and refreshing, it offers pear and citrus flavors, a touch of baked apple, and subtle shortbread. It is a perfect companion for seafood, chicken, green vegetables, and pesto. $18.99

Colene Clemens Margo Pinot Noir 2021, Chehalem Mountains, Willamette Valley, Oregon, VarietalsPinot NoirAlc. 14%

Located in the western end of Dopp Road where the Chehalem Mountains converge with Ribbon Ridge, this 122-acre property was acquired in 2005 and first planted in 2006 by Joe and Victoria Starkto. They make exceptional pinot noir, and they named the property in honor of Victoriaโ€™s mother, Coleen. The vineyard is completely dry-farmed, and sustainable and organic processes are used whenever possible. Margo, named after Coleneโ€™s great-granddaughter, comprises selected vineyard blocks and barrels from the Estate. Vibrant cranberry and boysenberry aromas jump from the glass, leading to concentrated red and dark red fruit and generous baking spice elements on the palate. This approachable pinot noir has vibrant acidity and well-integrated tannins that will make it incredibly food- friendly, although it is perfectly delightful on its own. It goes well with mushroom risotto, grilled salmon, and charcuterie. $44.99

Famille Perrin Vinsobres โ€œLes Cornuds,โ€ Southern Rhone, France, 50% Syrah, 50% Grenache, Alc. 14.5%

The Perrin family has cultivated their love of wine for several generations. The story begins in the early twentieth century with the Chรขteau de Beaucastel, the jewel of Chateauneuf Pape. In 1909, Pierre Tramier acquired the estate. Thereafter, his son-in-law, Pierre Perrin, followed by his son Jacques Perrin, developed Beaucastel and its vineyards. Pioneers of organic farming since 1953, and biodynamics since 1970, the Perrin family was also the first to plant Rhone varietals in the USA. Vinsobres is a magnificent village close to Vaison-la-Romaine at an average altitude of 300 meters. Its terroir of terraces is particularly well suited to Syrah and Grenache, which thrive and do their best here. The name of this wine, Les Cornuds, alludes to the hamlet where the vines grow and the name for a grape pickerโ€™s carrying basket. The wine has immense freshness, thanks to the vineyard’s altitude and the perfect balance between Syrah and Grenache. It is a deep ruby-red color with powerful and complex aromas of baking spices, black fruit, licorice, and a hint of fennel. Elegant and perfectly balanced, the mouth offers a full and silky texture with flavors matching the nose. It pairs well with roasted meats, barbeque, charcuterie, and strong cheeses. $21.99

Russell Orchard Has Re-Opened

We were delighted to find that Russell Orchard on Argilla Rd in Ipswich has re-opened for the season. It is hands-down one of our favorite spots to stop, shop and have a little wander. The farm animals were scarce the day we visited but it’s still a great stop for plants, baked goods, ice cream, provisions and wines.

GLOUCESTER STAGE COMPANY TO KICK OFF THE 2024 SEASON ON MAY 31

Tony Award Winner VANYA AND SONIA AND MASHA AND SPIKE to open Gloucester Stage’s 45th Season

GLOUCESTER STAGE COMPANYproudly announces the launch of its 45th season, marking nearly half a century of delivering exceptional theatrical experiences to audiences in Gloucester and beyond. To kick off this milestone season, Gloucester Stage is thrilled to present the Tony Award-winning play VANYA AND SONIA AND MASHA AND SPIKE by Christopher Durang, directed by Rebecca Bradshawยบ.

As part of the celebration, Gloucester Stage is honored to pay tribute to one of the most distinguished playwrights in American theater, Christopher Durang, recipient of the 2024 Dramatist Guild’s Lifetime Achievement Award, whose illustrious career has left an indelible mark on the world of theater. VANYA AND SONIA AND MASHA AND SPIKE, a comedic masterpiece that has garnered critical acclaim and numerous accolades, will run from May 31 to June 23, captivating audiences with its wit, charm, and hilarity.

In this uproarious comedy, three adult siblings reunite under one roof, bringing with them a cacophony of opinions, quirks, and desires. Directed by Gloucester Stage’s Artistic Director Rebecca Bradshawยบ, the production navigates the complexities of family dynamics with humor and heart as the trio finds themselves slipping into the petulance of their teenage years amidst a cast of eccentric characters.

The Quarry Project: Photographs by Tsar Fedorskyย Opens at Manship Artists Residency on June 7

Manship Artists Residency is pleased to announce The Quarry Project: Photographs by Tsar Fedorsky, which opens at the Manship Artists Residency on Friday, June 7 and runs through July 7. The Quarry Project is a continuation of Manship Artist Tsar Fedorskyโ€™s twenty-year practice investigating the properties of black-and-white photography and how it creates abstraction from realism. Begun in 2016, the more recent quarry photographs are a study of duality and tension. They comprise a deep exploration of the familiarity of place, the quarries near Fedorskyโ€™s home in Gloucester.

Fedorsky explains the meaning behind her work, โ€œ [The photographs] straddle a space between truth and fiction, between the exterior and interior, between fact and dreamโ€ฆWe think we are looking up, yet we are really looking down. We think we see the sky, but instead we see the water. What appears to be a mountain, is actually a rock. With the pandemic, war, the dire effects of climate change, and a dangerous political theater โ€” meaning is breaking down, language has lost its meaning, and we are left in a perpetual state of questioning. The Quarry Projectembraces this confusion, allows for projection and the possibility that a negative space can be beautiful.โ€

Tsar first worked with Manship Artists Residency in 2020. She collaborated with Marc Zegans, a California-based poet. Due to the pandemic, Zegans was unable to be physically present for the residency so their work revolved around the concepts of presence and absence. Fedorsky captured glimpses of an imagined โ€œghostโ€ poet in the Manship home. Their collaboration resulted in a limited-edition photo book titled Ghost Book, published in 2024 by Kite String Press. Samantha C. Harvey, a professor of English at Boise State in Boise, Idaho, and a self-proclaimed fan of โ€œcreaky old houses,โ€ wrote the foreword for the book. Copies of the book will be available for sale at Fedorskyโ€™s opening reception.

Tsar Fedorsky is a photographer based in Gloucester, Massachusetts. Her photographs have been exhibited and published nationally and worldwide. Fedorsky holds an MFA in Photography from the University of Hartford in Connecticut and a BA from Amherst College in Massachusetts. She received a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship for Creative Arts in Photography in 2018, was a Critical Mass Finalist in 2015 and 2017, and received an Artist Fellowship Grant from the Massachusetts Cultural Council in 2015. Fedorsky traveled to Brazil as a Fulbright U.S. Scholar in 2023-24.

The exhibition opening and artistโ€™s reception will take place Friday, June 7 from 5:30 to 7:30 pm. Gallery hours will be 1:00 – 4:00 pm on Saturdays and Sundays through July 7 with the exception of June 15 and 16 when the gallery will be closed. Visitors can register to attend on the home page of the Manship Artists Residency website at ManshipArtists.org

ABOUT the MANSHIP ARTISTS RESIDENCY

The site of the Manship Artists Residency was once the summer retreat of Paul Manship, the sculptor of the Prometheus Fountain at Rockefeller Center. Many of the same opportunities and qualities that attracted Manship to Cape Ann are available to those who come here seeking solitude or community in this restorative landscape. Manship Artists Residency gives artists and the creative spirit time and space to flourish for the benefit of our community by welcoming artists and thought leaders from around the world to work in these serene surroundings steps away from the scenic northeast coast of New England. Our residents magnify the social capital and the cultural value of Cape Ann, and our innovative programming contributes to the health and vitality of our community and beyond. ManshipArtists.org
