Due to the inclement weather of yesterday and more coming on Saturday, it would be best to cancel clean up near Good harbor Beach. We will reschedule for Saturday, April 13, 2024. Will post next Wednesday. Thank you all and try to stay dry.

I took a morning walk around Maritime Gloucester the other day. Their property, the pier, the boats, Harbor Loop, Solomon Jacob Park, the Coast Guard Station, and the Harbor Master’s offices are always a great place to take photos. This time of year, even with the blanket of snow we see this morning, there always exists the hope of summer and just enough hustle and bustle to let you know that the waterfront will soon be hopping.

We have had family for company this week so have been seeking family friendly restaurants. The nine year old asked what that means “family friendly” so I’ll offer my parameters: adequate space for seating squirmy kids; a decent kids meal menu with favorites like pasta or pizza; patient servers. We hit the mark at Vita Bella in Essex recently.
I enjoyed my chicken piccata and Jim got ravioli. The children got pasta and pizza (which were quickly eaten so I didn’t get great shots) along with drink cups with covers! Our server was very patient and accommodating which we appreciated. We will take a family group back to Vita Bella at some point knowing everyone will be happy if the kids are happy.

Saturday, April 27th from 11:00am to 3:00pm: Cape Ann’s first-ever festival dedicated to self-published works is free to all
The SAWYER FREE LIBRARY is excited to announce the inaugural GLOUCESTER ZINE FEST, taking place on Saturday, April 27, from 11 am to 3 pm at both 20 and 21 Main Street in Gloucester, MA. The festival, in celebration of the Library’s new zine collection, zine-making, and zine culture, promises a day filled with artistic expression, community engagement, and fun for all ages. It is free and open to everyone to attend and enjoy with free giveaways for the first 200 attendees.
Short for fanzine or magazine, zines are small-batch, hand-made publications that come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and formats. As DIY self-published works, they are a medium for self-expression that is generally not represented in mainstream culture.
Gloucester Zine Fest attendees can look forward to a vibrant and engaging lineup of hands-on activities and workshops for all ages, including inspiring speakers and live music, with the highlight being the Zine Marketplace at 20 Main Street. Here is where zinester-vendors will be trading and selling their work, serving as a great opportunity for people to meet the artists and learn what zines are all about. Participants of all ages can also unleash their creativity by crafting their own zine with local community partners Cape Ann Art Haven and Cape Ann Museum and enjoy aperformance by the Gloucester Student Band. And what’s a festival without some delicious treats? Attendees can indulge in some Holy Cow Ice Cream while immersing themselves in the world of zines.
The Sawyer Free Library’s mission is to cultivate connections across our community, power imaginations, inspire learning and provide a free, welcoming space for all. Zine-making provides the opportunity to nourish creativity and discover perspectives from diverse voices. Zines are often a platform for people in marginalized or less-empowered communities to share their knowledge and experiences.
The Sawyer Free has been diligently curating a collection of zines that are now available for checkout. This collection aims to provide access to a wide range of zines, showcasing a variety of styles and perspectives. Additionally, the Library welcomes zine donations from people who wish to contribute to this growing collection.

WINES
Tormaresca, Calafuria Rosato 2023, Salento, Italy
This wine comes from the “heel of the boot” in the southern Italian region of Puglia. Made from 100% Negroamaro grapes, the wine has a peach-pink hue with pleasant fruit aromas (strawberry, raspberry) and floral notes of violet and peony. On the palate it is fresh, well balanced, with the same fruit flavors as nose and persistent acidity for a crisp finish. Calafuria is produced from vineyards that extend along the Adriatic coastline. Its name comes from one of the over 700 bays on the Apulian peninsula. The region boasts a long tradition for producing rosé wines made from Negroamaro, a variety that best expresses its full potential near the sea. Tomaresca is part of the Marchesi Antinori family of wines and is produced with the same attention to high quality. Pairs well with mild soft cheeses and seafood. Alc. 12%, $21.99
Joao Portugal Ramos, Marques De Borba Vinhas Velhas Branco, 2022, Alentejo, Portugal
The name comes from the happy coincidence of João Portugal Ramos’ vineyards and winery being in the Borba sub-region of the Alentejo and that his uncle has the noble title Marquês de Borba, a title created in 1811. Coming from this large wine region in southern Portugal, the wine is a blend of four native grape varieties: Roupeiro, Antao Vaz, Alvarinho, and Arinto dos Acores. Classic dry white from this region with aromas of citrus fruits on the nose and bright, crisp green apple, citrus, tropical fruit, and ripe peach flavors. The wine spends 8 months in a mix of French and Hungarian oak barrels, giving it a creamy texture and smooth finish. It pairs well with seared scallops, light pasta, and pork chops. Alc. 13%, $21.99
Nino Negri, Ca’Brione Alpi Retiche di Sondrio 2022, Lombardy, Italy
From the northern Italian region of Lombardy, this white wine is a blend of four grapes, including the red great varietal Nebbiolo (10%) along with 30 % each of Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Incrocio Manzoni, a native grape to the region. Ca’Brione is an alpine white wine born in 1986. The soil’s geological origins go back to when the African and European plates collided, forming the Alps. The great variety of soil lends both minerality and elegance to the wine. The wine has a golden straw hue with an aroma of pear, apple, and white peach. The palate is the same with a hint of citrus, medium to full body with a bit of weight and structure in the mouth, and a pleasant long finish. It pairs well with cured meats, hard and mature cheeses, and creamy pasta dishes. Alc. 13%. $47.99.
Joao Portugal Ramos, Marques De Borba Vinhas Velhas Rosso, 2021, Alentejo, Portugal
The red wine comes from vineyards with more than 35-year-old vines . One of the most emblematic brands of João Portugal Ramos, Marquês de Borba combines the tradition of the Alentejo region with excellent quality, present since the first vintage in 1997. A bold red blend from the southern Alentejo region of Portugal, It comprises three native grape varieties: Aragonez (Tempranillo), Alicante Bouschet, Castelao, and the international varietal Syrah. The dark ruby red color leads to aromas of blackberry, blueberry, and black cherry. It spends 12 months in French and American oak barrels giving it a round structure and hint of tobacco along with the black fruit flavors. Rich, supple tannins lead to a long, enjoyable finish. It pairs well with red meats, pork, and strong cheeses. Alc. 14.5%. $21.99
Le Salare, Vicino al Mare, Old Vine Montepulciano D’ Abruzzo, 2020, Abruzzo Italy
Made from the Montepulciano grape varietal from the region of Abruzzo in central Italy. It comes from old vines that give it a depth and character beyond its age. The wine has a deep rose red color and a nose with ripe red fruit flavors of cherry and plum. Its full body has modest but well-integrated tannins that are mellow in the glass and lead to a long, elegant finish. Delicious when paired with classic Italian dishes like spaghetti and meatballs. Alc. 13%, $17.99.
