Do you remember Dr. Ruth? Did you know about her life story? Allison Gilbert’s deft portrait about Dr. Ruth Westheimer’s ongoing professional arc is an eye-opener and memorable read.
“…I still will talk about sexual dysfunction. But I have done that.” She had recently turned 95, and after a long and spirited career as America’s most famous and least likely sex counselor, she was driven by a new challenge…”
“Loneliness was on the rise before the pandemic but escalated because of lockdowns and social-distancing requirements.
And Dr. Westheimer felt the effects firsthand.
…Dr. Westheimer insists, however, there was at least one upside to her confinement. She was grounded long enough to recall having written in her childhood diary about feeling lonely. And she had the time to look for it.
She found it.
The diary, started in 1945 when she was 17 and written in her native German and sometimes in Hebrew, recounts in painful detail what it was like for her to grow up in a Swiss children’s home during World War II.
Before her explosive rise to stardom as America’s sex therapist in the 1980s, Dr. Westheimer was born Karola Ruth Siegel to an Orthodox Jewish couple in the German town of Wiesenfeld.
She was 10 years old when she was put on a train to Switzerland, part of the Kindertransport of Jewish children seeking refuge from the Nazis. It was Thursday, Jan. 5, 1939…”

Chief Eric Smith is pleased to share that the Gloucester Fire Department has joined forces with Addison Gilbert Hospital’s Access Services Department to raise money to fill the holiday store of the Cape Ann Kids Holiday Fund. |
The Cape Ann Kids Holiday Fund has been helping children in need on Cape Ann have a brighter Christmas for nearly a decade now, providing toys to more than 1,250 children in Gloucester, Rockport, Manchester by the Sea, Essex and Ipswich. |
The fund provides gifts to children whose families are struggling financially by operating a holiday store filled with gifts that children can choose from to make their holidays a little brighter. The store is operated by Wellspring House in Gloucester, and Pathways for Kids, with major support from Sen. Bruce Tarr and Action Inc. |
This year, the Cape Ann Kids Holiday Fund toy store is located at Pathways for Kids, 29 Emmerson Ave., Gloucester. |
Gloucester Firefighters Dean DeCoste, Mike Michell, Lukas McRobb and Lieutenants Bud Doucette and Tom Sayess have all collected cash donations for the toy drive during the week of Thanksgiving. They also launched a GoFundMe page to raise additional funds, and toys were collected at Gloucester Fire Headquarters. |
The need is greater than ever this year, as 366 children between ages 12 and 18 have signed up for assistance. |
On Wednesday, Dec. 13, Gloucester firefighters and staff from Addison Gilbert Hospital’s Access Services Department setoff for Walmart in Danvers to purchase new, unwrapped gifts to add to the toys collected, and those gifts were delivered on Thursday, Dec. 14. |
“We, along with Addison Gilbert Hospital’s Access Services Department, would like to personally thank all those who have contributed or will contribute to this holiday effort,” said Chief Smith. “This is a great cause and a great organization here on Cape Ann.” |
