FINE WINE TASTING @ SAVOUR WITH MORGAN DOWNS, SAVOUR’S NEWEST STAFF MEMBER AND FRENCH WINE EXPERT
WINES
Domaine Barmès-Buecher 2021
Alsace, France
Varietal: Pinot Blanc Alc. 13.5%
Situated in the village of Wettolsheim, at the foot of the hills beneath the Vosges mountains, Domaine Barmes-Buecher’s 17 hectares of vines lie south of Colmar and Turckheim and produce an average of 100,000 bottles and around twenty different cuvées every year. The Domaine grows a number of Alsatian grape varieties and its production is split over seven different terroirs, three of which are classified as Grand Cru.
The Pinot Blanc is a golden color, and the nose has aromas of minerals and flint along with some peach. Pineapple and orange, lemon, pepper, and clove are present on the palate. The fruit is luscious and weighty, but the wine also has good acidity and a clean mouthfeel. Clay and limestone with some sandstone, primarily north and east-facing, give life to old vines of Pinot Blanc on this terroir. These noble soils make a short to medium-term cellar stay quite appropriate for this wine, though not obligatory. Ripe, full, crisp and dry all at once, eminently suitable for aperitif, white baked fish, simple Asian cuisine. $32.99
Eminent estate of the left-bank created by the late Denis DUBOURDIEU (the ‘Pope’ of dry white Bordeaux). Spread over 25 hectares of limestone plateau in Pujols-sur-Ciron, adjacent to Barsac (famous appellation for sweet wines), Semillon heads the vineyard’s varietal list (53%), followed by Sauvignon Blanc and a small dose of Muscadelle. (15 additional hectares are devoted to the elaboration of red and rose cuvees). Tight but full-bodied, but with agreeable acidity which sustains buttery notes, pine-nut, white truffle and herbaceous undertones. Lovers of white wines from Burgundy, the Rhone Valley, and of course classic, old-fashioned white Bordeaux have reason to be satisfied. Veal, chicken, turkey, fish with Sauce Beurre Blanc will elicit harmony from this wine, preferably decanted one to two hours before serving. Ten years in the cellar will amply reward the patient.
Champagne Drappier Brut Rosé, France
Varietal: Pinot Noir Alc.12.5%
Preferred Champagne producer of the General De Gaulle, pillar of the Aube subregion, Drappier have excelled since their inception in 1808 at producing robust Pinot Noir-based Champagne in the town of Urville, on the site of a former Benedictine monastery founded by Saint Bernard of Clairvaux. Several days of maceration confer depth of color and character to this rich Champagne. Modest Brut dosage rounds out the edges without dulling freshness. Strawberry, violets, and discrete spices entice and command attention. Be similarly generous and serve it at mealtime with guinea fowl or roast turkey. $64.99
Château du Hureau ‘Tuffe’ 2020, Saumur-Champigny, Anjou, France
Varietal: Cabernet Franc Alc.13.5%
15 parcels drawn from across the towns of Saumur and Dampierre, all comprised of the famous ‘tuffe’ limestone emblematic of the soils, cellars and Chateaux of ‘white Anjour’ and the middle Loire provide the basis for this accessible Saumur-Champigny. 100% Cabernet Franc vinified and aged primarily in stainless steel. Dark berries and wet underbrush with hints of tobacco bely the small pretensions of this delicious wine, full of finesse. Opened several hours in advance, it will ravish your palate accompanying a rare steak, pheasant, or the delicious silence of a fire-warmed November evening. $21.99
Bergerie du Capucin ‘Dame Jeanne’ 2019
Pic-Saint-Loup, Languedoc, France
Varietals: Syrah, Grenache, Mourvedre Alc. 14.5%
Drawn from 12 hectares in one of the Languedoc’s great appellations (3 additional hectares are devoted to white wines) this is a rich, smooth, and elegant red wine. With 70% Syrah rounded out by 15% Grenache and Mourvedre respectively, the depth of color is attractive indeed. Faithful to the traditional character of the terroir, the wine exhibits aromas of black pepper, garrigue, wild berries and violets in abundance, with a cool acidity redeeming the solar circumstances of its fruition. Lamb, beef, or indeed well-seared white meats, prepared with rosemary and thyme would be most appropriate. $32.99
Tenuto di Biserno ‘Il Pino di Biserno’ 2015
Toscana Rosso, Italy
Varietals: Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot Alc. 14.5%
From the Tenuta di Biserno, an estate created in 2001 in the Upper Maremma adjacent to Bolgheri comes this sturdy wine. At 90 meters above sea-level, seated on mostly limestone soil with some clay and stone with generous calcium deposits, coming to fruition in a maritime climate, all elements of this wine’s terroir indicate the setting for a brilliant expression of Bordeaux varietals in the Super-Tuscan style. A bold, powerful wine requiring big-game, steak or duck, preferably accompanied by a truffle, foie gras or mushroom sauce. Multiple decades in the cellar remain for those who prefer the merits of age. Decant vigorously. $74.99
And don’t forget to check out what’s new in our beer case, including two juicy NE IPAs and a clean, refreshing rice lager from East Regiment Brewing, a veteran-owned brewery in Salem and a crisp new lager and a smooth, refreshing kolsch from Rockport Brewing.
