Cape Ann United Beat Scituate 2:1 Match 1 Day 1 Playoffs #MTOC Soccer Tournament #GloucesterMA

Update from Day 1 MTOC State Tournament. Soccer fields at Progin Park Lancaster

Friday June 23, 2023

These tournament games are quick–each half is only 25 minutes–so they can be unforgiving. Not this one.

Cape Ann United’s first goal came swift and easy. Andrew Coelho was fouled by the keeper in the box resulting in a penalty kick. (From a distance it looked there was a yellow card.)

For the second goal. Charles stole on a transition & passed back to Brendan Anderton who lofted a sweet perfect assist to Dominic Paone for a great header to finish and pull ahead 2:0.

Scituate sniped from 40 yards out (it seemed long!) to stave a shut out, but it’s unlikely they’d have broken through CAU’s defense which maintained possession both halves. There were several shots on their goal.

Players didn’t stick around after the win. Afterall, they’re traveling back and forth to Gloucester since it’s Fiesta!

Two games tomorrow: Martha’s Vineyard then Stoneham. If those go well, Cape Ann United moves on to the semis and finals Sunday. This team is aiming for another State Championship.

Colin Sweet 2023 Friday Greasy Pole Champion!

Congratulations to Colin Sweet on winning the 2023 Friday Greasy Pole Competition in the second competitive round! After several near misses, Colin takes home the flag. Props as well to Nick Taormina who caught the flag but the flag did not come loose enough from the pole! Very exciting competition on a beautiful night. I am rushing this to post prior to deadline and more photos and story details will follow tomorrow morning.

Seine Boat Intel Shares This Seine Boat Information About The Races Starting Today

A REMINDER….in the next three days….130 high school student athletes will be competing in junior seine boat races (AND…more impressive, more than 150 high school student athletes in total have competed in the seine boat races this year). That includes both boys and girls junior crews. That is AMAZING. AND…they deserve your support. So….let’s pack Pavilion Beach once again.

Tomorrow, Friday morning, starting at 9:00AM. There will be THREE three-boat boys junior elimination races to determine which crews will advance to Saturday’s race…..and possibly a chance to challenge Family Strokes, the 2022 defending junior boys seine boat champions on Sunday afternoon.

Then, tomorrow evening, “around” 6:00-ish PM…..the junior girls seine boat championship race will be held (after the Women’s championship race and Friday Greasy Pole competition). Both elimination race champions from Sunday’s races, The Lady Lukes and Chicks with Sticks, will be giving their best shot to knock off the defending 20222 junior girls champions, All OAR Nothing.

Each of these rowers is the future of our iconic and unique tradition. They have put in the time and effort over the past two weeks to get ready for this. Rowing a seine boat is not easy….and they have all performed like champions.

So let’s make the time, show your support and cheer them on.

PS Huge shout out to Jerry Ciaramitaro, Cindy Perry and Mike Harmon for crushing it and getting a ton of high school student interested in the race. Great job.
