Magnolia Village sign
The Bellissimo Family of Hesperus Avenue appreciate how much small businesses drive the economy. In an effort to help direct travelers to the businesses of Magnolia Village, Bill and Jean Bellissimo restored the nostalgic sign that is pictured below with their three boys. This sign stood in this exact location for decades and hopefully will remain for years to come. What a great gesture by a local family showing support for local businesses. With the help of a great team from the City of Gloucester Department of Public Works, the restored sign was put back in place today

Photo taken in 1931. Guess where it is?

SAVOUR-SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 18TH COMPLIMENTARY FINE WINE TASTING WITH CASEY GRUTTADAURIA, IDEAL WINE & SPIRITS CO.

WHAT: For this Saturday’s Complimentary Wine Tasting we continue with the theme of tasting wines of the season, here bridging the transition from summer to fall with our guest host Casey Cruttadauria, a wine specialist from the Ideal Wine & Spirits Company that specialize in importing from small high-quality wineries in Europe, the Continent and the Americas. You will be tasting 3 wines from France and one each from Italy and Germany that may be new to your palette. As always, the tasting is elevated using our imported Riedel glassware .

WHY: These are especially fine wines with the 3 French selections leading the way and all the varietals are the prized grapes of the region. For this tasting the food pairings will lean toward lighter, classic fare.
WHO: Joining Savour owner & wine merchant Kathleen Morgan is wine specialist Casey Gruttadaria
WHEN: This Saturday, September 18th, from 2p to 4p at Savour
HOW: Saturday tastings are complimentary, as is parking behind the store with a rear entrance.
Saturday’s Pourings include:
Balestri Valda Soave Classico – Veneto, Italy. Made from 100% organically grown Garganega grapes, farmed bio-dynamically on rich volcanic soil on a small, family estate.
The wine has stony minerality and bright, fresh, green apple fruit. Aged in concrete without oak, this true expression of the terroir of the Veneto, Pairs Well with Italian classics such as risotto, gnocchi in tomato sauce, salt cod, polenta and Robiola cheese.
Jean-Marc Burgaud Morgon Grans Cras – Beaujolais, France. “The 2019 Morgon Grand Cras offers up a rich bouquet of licorice, blackberries and cherries, followed by a medium to full-bodied, fleshy and enveloping palate built around ripe, powdery tannins and succulent acids. Derived from 55-year-old vines planted in clay-rich alluvial soils, it saw 12 days of maceration followed by 10 months of élevage in cement tank.” (Parker’s Wine Advocate). Pairs Well: with Salmon, Artic Char, Roast Pork Tenderloin, and Mousse Truffé.
Domaine de la Rectorie Cote Mer – Roussillon, France. The pretty fishing port of Collioure, traditional home of artists and anchovy fishermen (!), is surrounded by vineyards, hills and terraces that were trod upon by many viticultural influencers, from Phoenician merchants, to the Knights Templar. A blend of Grenache Noir, Syrah, and Carignan, organically grown in vineyard terraces overhanging the Mediterranean sea, where harvesting is done completely by hand. This unique dry Rhone-style red is fermented in steel and fiberglass, followed by 10 months of barrel-ageing in neutral French oak. Its characteristic licorice and violet notes Pair Well: with roasted lamb, grilled beef and mushroom stew.
Raquillet Vieilles Vignes Mercurey – Burgundy, France. Francois Raquillet is an 11th generation vigneron. He and his wife Emmanuelle took over the family estate in 1990. They farm 10 hectares of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, mostly in Mercurey. François is now among the very best producers of the Cote Chalonnaise. This classic red Burgundy wine is made from vines over 60 years old, producing lighter yields, but highly concentrated fruit, resulting in Pinot Noir of deep plum and dark cherry fruit around a core of led-pencil and granite. Pairs Well: with wild mushrooms, seared tuna, roasted salmon, goat cheese, and chicken or rabbit with a mustard sauce.
Loersch Glimmerschiefer Riesling Feinherb – Mosel, Germany. This sparkling, fresh Riesling is made from young vines grown in gray slate soil, producing a flinty wine with great acidity and aromatic Honeycrisp apple and Bartlett pear fruit. A spicy, vibrant wine that
Pairs Well: with many dishes, especially Indian classics and Thai or other Asian dishes, such as Mu-shu pork. Only 10% alcohol, light and refreshing

Hummers At Summer’s End
It’s not over til the hummingbirds leave, I guess. They are still hanging around in our yard as the summer starts its wrap-up party. It’s been a joy to have them around but I imagine it won’t be for much longer, so I will enjoy them while I can until next year.
