Gloucester Meetinghouse Motherās Day Concert to Featuring Coplandās āAppalachian Springā
The Gloucester Meetinghouse Foundation is pleased to announce that the Ipswich-based community orchestra, āThe Orchestra on the Hill,ā will perform renowned composer Aaron Coplandās prizewinning āAppalachian Springā on Sunday, May 14, in the historic Gloucester Universalist Meetinghouse.
This Motherās Day concert begins at 3:30 p.m., led by conductor and orchestra founder Tom Palance, a member of the music faculty at Salem State University and at the Boston Conservatory of Music. This will be the 20-member orchestraās first concert appearance in Gloucester.
Along with the orchestral suite āAppalachian Springā the program will present Ralph Vaughan Williamsās āSuite for Viola and Orchestra,ā and a new work by Ipswich musician and composer Chris Florio, āThe Banquet.ā Coplandās scoring of familiar melodies in āAppalachian Springā won him the Pulitzer Prize in Music in 1944.
This is the finale in GMFās fall-winter 2016-17 concert series. The Meetinghouse, an icon on Gloucesterās skyline, is located at the corner of Church and Middle Street in downtown Gloucester. Parking is available on the green. Accessible side entrance with a lift at 10 Church Street.
A summer series of free Friday evening, outdoor concerts on the Meetinghouse lawn starts on July 7th. āMusic on Meetinghouse Greenā features a different musical ensemble each week with a partner North Shore non-profit as the beneficiary via free-will offerings from the audience.
Tickets to the May 14 concert are $45 for preferred seating, $30 for general seating, and $25 for students and seniors. Admission is free to persons age 17 and under. Tickets are available at the door or may be purchased in advance at www.gloucestermeetinghouse.org
The Gloucester Meetinghouse Foundationās mission is to preserve Gloucesterās last-surviving historic Meetinghouse, as a civic hub, entertainment venue and community center. The landmark 1806 Meetinghouse is home to the Gloucester Unitarian Universalist Church, whose founders led the way in Massachusetts for legal separation of church and state as now enshrined in the First Amendment.
The Orchestra on the Hill is a community organization formed in support of professional music performances and performers on the North Shore. Its mission is to enrich Ipswich and surrounding communities through exceptional concerts of orchestral music, and provide opportunities for non-professional adult musicians to rehearse together coached by professional conductors and players.

MBTA Forum was hosted on April 26 at 6:30pm in Gloucester City Hall where petitions were passed out to all to consider and sign, as well as provide the opportunity to speak out about any concerns on the proposed repair schedule.
The undersigned oppose closure of all public transit for the commuter rail north of the Salem Commuter Rail Station, as has been proposed for a minimum of 28 days from July 17 through August 13, and of the entire North Station to Rockport line for a series of weekends in the summer of 2017, without suitable mitigation. We and others rely on the commuter service to get to work, school, food shop, visit family and friends and also to reach recreation and entertainment and shopping destinations on Cape Ann. Many people, especially lower paid workers, will lose their jobs if they have no public transit, as they have no private car to use instead or cannot afford the parking costs. Cape Ann businesses often rely on summer income to hit sustainable revenue needs for the entire year and some will fail due to absence of public transit. The valuation of all Cape Ann real estate will be diminished by the enduring poor reputation as having unreliable essential public transit. Alternative public transit must be made available to serve residents and visitors, at times and prices sufficiently affordable to accommodate all public needs. AS SIGNED BY THE BELOW NAMES:

āAs Massachusetts moves forward to implement Positive Train Control (PTC), it is imperative that MassDOT find ways to work with the communities impacted by this federally mandated requirement to ensure that the disruption to service is mitigated. While there is no good time to implement PTC, MassDOT needs to hear from community members about the impact shutting weekend commuter rail service in the summer months will have on their lives.
I was discouraged to hear that MassDOT has canceled public hearings, which are important in order for them to hear directly from the communities impacted by these weekend shutdowns.
I have heard your concerns loud and clear and I will continue to work with municipal, state, and MassDOT officials to ensure that this process is open, fair, and transparentā
