Quote of the Week

raoul

“In an industrial society which confuses work and productivity, the necessity of producing has always been an enemy of the desire to create.”

Raoul Vaneigem (1934 –     )

Born in Belgium, Vaneigem studied philology (the study of written history) at the Free University of Brussels in the 1950’s. He and Guy Debord were the principal theorists of the Situationist International, which had wide influence on radical artistic and political thought in the 1960’s. His best known work, The Revolution of Everyday Life, expounds the situationist belief that capitalism promoted “passive second-hand individual expression through the consumption of commodities over directly lived experiences and first-hand fulfillment of personal desires” and inflicted profound damage on the quality of human life for both individuals and society.

The PHIT Act

I received this email the other day from Modell’s Sporting Goods.  I shop there fairly often as there is a store near my work…and we’re always in need of something sports related!

As a parent who spends a substantial amount of money on youth sports, I was intrigued by this letter and kind of surprised that I hadn’t  heard about this previously. Have you?

Thoughts?

In case you’re interested, not because I’m lobbying or trying to gather interest, I’ve attached the link included in the letter…

The Latest… A DR Code Green 2nd Generation @WeberGrills Performer

Check out the restore project here-

Joey Ciaramitaro's avatarNortheast BBQ

Our buddy Anthony Caturano At Tonno took the second SS Performer.  Immediately I had a empty pit in my stomach, without a Performer to cook on at the dock. Truth be told I really enjoy the restoration process and needed another project so I searched out another Performer looking for some love.

So this beautiful gem fell into my lap look at the bottom of this post:)

It’s a second generation Weber Performer.  Each of the Generations of the Performers have things I like about them.

The classic lines on the first generation Stainless Steel ones, the only performers to use stainless steel. (Here’s the performer Anthony took)

Concert on the Adams Organ at the Annisquam Village Church

Friday, November 4

7:00 p.m.

Jeremy Adams Organ, 1986. Annisquam Village Church, Gloucester, MA. Photograph 2016 by Paul Cary Goldberg.

This special concert, held at the Annisquam Village Church, is offered in conjunction with Voicing the Woods: Jeremy Adams, Instrument Maker, on view at the Cape Ann Museum from October 22, 2016 through February 26, 2017.

This program is $10 for Museum and American Guild of Organists Society (AGO) members / $15 for nonmembers. Tickets can be purchased by calling (978) 283-0455 x10 or online at Eventbrite. Advance tickets are required.

Organist Kevin Birch will play the Jeremy Adams-built organ and clavichord. The thirteen-stop, double manual, mechanical (tracker) action organ with its trompe l’oeil pipe shades that reference baroque instruments in Brittany, exemplifies the bold and individual voicing for which Adams is known.

Birch has performed throughout the United States, Europe and South America. He holds the Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Iowa with previous studies at the Sweelinck Conservatory (Amsterdam) and the New England Conservatory (Boston).

The Annisquam Village Church was established as the Third Parish of Gloucester in 1728 to serve people living in the areas of Annisquam, Bay View, Lanesville and Sandy Bay. Located at the head of Lobster Cove at the corner of Washington and Leonard Streets, the 1830’s building is renowned for its graceful beauty and extraordinary acoustics.

Voicing the Woods has been generously sponsored by Jerry and Margaretta Hausman, Hinda Simon, Bettie Cartwright, Gregory and Stevie Neal, Robert M. Russell and Jane Deering Gallery.

Fall Artist At Rose Baker

OCTOBER 6, 2016 ~ OLDFOLKS76 ~

Every two months, Juni VanDyke, Director of the Rose Baker Senior Center Art Program selects one or two artist to be honored with a show of their works. The two artists being honored for the fall are Kay Carpenter and Pippy Giuliano. Their work will be on display from now until the end of November in the main lobby of the Senior Center, located at 6 Manuel F. Lewis St. in Gloucester, from 9 am to 4pm Monday through Friday.

Kay Carpenter and Pippy Giuliano pictured  in front of their works.

Many of you will remember Kay Carpenter as one of the 2015 November artists of the month. She has created a number of new works and is being honored again. During her twenty-eight years working at the Usen O’Donnell fish packing plant, she was grateful to be able to look out at the surrounding views of the sky, sand, and ocean. In retirement, she finally has time to do what she has always wanted to do — paint the natural world.

Two years ago, Kay began working in watercolor. She found the medium surprising and was delighted with the results she was able to achieve. In her graceful watercolors, you will see her love of the natural world, color, and especially her love of the surroundings of her woodland home.

When asked to talk about her work, Pippy Giuliano said “The Icons of Gloucester inspire me to look closely, be absorbed and to record what results from the interaction.  Strength, endurance, perseverance is City Hall.  Perpetual protection and watchfulness is Our Lady.  The painter and painted sustain each other — breathe life into each other establishing a connectedness that is rooted here in this beloved place — this port of Gloucester — my home.” When you see her work in this exhibit, you will feel her love of the city and the buildings that reflect its spirit.

SAILBOATS FOR MILES

Tuesday morning I gave my Pollinator Garden program to a great group of women in Marblehead, the Winter Garden Club. Their first meeting of the year is held at the Corinthian Yacht Club, which overlooks Marblehead Harbor. The sight of so many sailboats was exquisite and made me wonder what it must look like not on an October morning but a summer Sunday. There is also an Audubon refuge located on the Neck, the Marblehead Neck Wildlife Sanctuary, which looks wonderfully interesting. I’ll definitely be returning!

Upcycled pallets vs international playground design: one dad’s inspiring backyard ninja course, Stage Fort, and BSA Extraordinary Play

power-of-play

“And on to the zip line. Once again, she has a lot of stuffed animal friends to cheer her on the course today…one-handed over the water bottles, and she makes it no problem…” (the father’s sweet narration)

The inspiring viral video of one dad’s DIY backyard obstacle course for his daughter could easily have been featured in Design Museum Boston‘s  excellent Extraordinary Play exhibition which was held at the BSA space, Boston Society of Architecture.  Extraordinary Play featured the best international public playground design, mostly big budget projects. Based on the posters, my sons and an older cousin thought the sky playground in City Museum, St. Louis, the Blaxland Riverside Park in Homebush Bay Australia, and the Globe Dokk1 Aarhaus in Denmark look amazing!

20160707_114626

We’d visit any of the BSA notable playgrounds in a heartbeat if we traveled nearby: Geopark Stavangar, Norway; Adventure Playground, Berkeley; Parque Gulliver, Valencia, Spain; The Globe Dokk1, Aarhaus, Denmark; Maggie Daley Park, Chicago; and Brooklyn Bridge Park, NY. (Scroll below to see those posters.)

Gloucester is lucky to have several good playgrounds. My children loved the gigantic truck, pirate ship and lighthouse at Stage Fort, plus so many paths, boulders and expansive fields and vistas. (I don’t think the sea serpent was there when they were little. We hope they might come back to supplement the excellent swings and climbing structure)

The BSA Space is just across the bridge from the Boston Children’s Museum and alongside the Greenway. The exhibitions are free.

A tip for visitors coming to Massachusetts for the first time is to stop by the BSA lobby to check out the model of the city.

Go before the Freedom Trail! Very helpful- reminded me of the old display at Gettysburg.
