PSA – Tag your kayaks!

I’ve owned kayaks for a few years now and it honestly never occurred to me to put my contact information on them until the article in the GDT yesterday.    They hang in my garage, I take them out to use them and I hang them back up.   After reading the article about two kayaks found unexplainably adrift in Salem with no identifying information and how it cost the Coast Guard and tax payers over $14,000 to search for any person who may, or may not, have been in the kayaks, I think I will get my $1.99 sharpie out and write my name and phone number on ours!Capture

  1. If you stop by the Harbormaster’s office on the wharf in Rockport Scott and Rosemary will give you a nice super sticky decal to stick inside your kayak.

I go nutty and put my name and cell phone number in about four places inside and out. At least two places I hide the name and number and also scratch it in just below the serial number of the boat (portside bow usually).

That way if someone borrows it and accidentally removes your name from all obvious places you can show them your cell number in the hidden spot. Gee, I think this is my kayak! Thanks for keeping it safe! 🙂

  2. I tag our Kayaks with a simple label that says : “Float Plan at https://goo.gl/Y1rHbx ” .

What I do is maintain a float plan in Google Docs (a document that you can edit every time you plan a trip) and associate with a link (use Google docs “publish to web” option).

Then, you can print out the Float Plan and put on your car dashboard, AND if your kayak shows up on shore, the finder can type the short URL into a browser (on phone or PC) and learn who owns the kayak and the particulars of your plan.
