Gloucester Block Party Sideshow Performer

At the block party, I caught part of a sideshow provided by Alex Becket of Dr. Bones’ Circus of Marvels. He started by tapping a large nail into his nose with a hammer.

Here is is showing us the (nice and long) nail:

Tapping it in:

Pulling it back out with pliers:

Yikes! Then he slammed a full can of tomatoes on his finger, resulting in a bent can and an unbroken finger (here’s a “before” shot):

It worked!  Alex is just one of the performers in Dr. Bones’ Circus of Marvels, but I unfortunately missed the rest.

QUARRY DANCE at Valley Pit quarry in Lanesville on July 26th and July 27th, 2013

This just in from Ina Hahn & Lisa Hahn, Windhover Performing Arts Center in Rockport

quarrydance“Quarry Dance 1”…performed by the Dušan Týnek Dance Theatre at Halibut Point State Park in Rockport, Mass. during the summer of 2012 was so successful that Windhover Performing Arts Center (located in Rockport, Mass)  has invited choreographer, Dušan Týnek  and his New York based modern dance company to develop a second installment , “Quarry Dance 2.”

This site-specific dance will be performed at privately owned Valley Pit Quarry, located at 7 Leverett Street in Lanesville (Gloucester) on Friday, July 26 and Saturday, July 27, 2013 at 5:30p.m. and is open to the public free of charge. Contributions are welcome. Parking is available at the Lanesville Congregational Church at 1120 Washington Street across from Leverett Street on both days. Parking is also available at the Lanesville Community Center at 8 Vulcan Street on Friday, July 26thonly.  Street parking is allowed on Emerald Street, as well as on one side of Washington Street. The performance will last about one hour.

Valley Pit Quarry has a unique history because its former owner, Sylvester Ahola, a Lanesville native, was one of the most talented and famous musicians of the 1920’s and 30’s, playing lead trumpet with over a dozen big bands and making over 2,000 records. After retirement in 1940’s, he hosted many sailing parties at the quarry as a way of celebrating these man-made wonders.

Today, almost 100 years later, Dušan Týnek takes on the challenge by creating a new dance that will reflect upon this special place and generate a new and fresh narrative. The dance will move naturally through the environment using perspective and the unique architecture created by the granite ledges, overhangs, cracks, cliffs and terraces. And the dancers will also be in contact with the water, using its sounds as an additional dimension to the dance. The entire quarry and its surroundings will become a stage.

The Dušan Týnek Dance Theatre is a dynamic, contemporary dance company based in Brooklyn, NY. Recently named one of the top 5 New York City dance companies of the year by the New York Times, they have toured throughout the U.S, Europe and Russia and have recently completed a series of successful performances at Baruch College in New York City. In September, they are scheduled to perform at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in celebration of the company’s 10th anniversary.  “ Terrific…striking…a high level of invention… Mr. Týnek is an undoubted talent.”  NYTimes

Chairs will be provided for the audience, but people are welcome to bring their own chairs too, and people are encouraged to bring their own water and/or soft drinks.

Windhover is grateful to Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Foundation for their support and the funding which has made this event possible.  We also wish to thank the Rockport and Gloucester Cultural Councils and The Donor Advised Fund of the Boston Foundation for their important contributions, as well as our many friends and supporters. We could not have achieved this without all of you.

I just need help deciding the colors

I’m definitely ordering Black and the Dark Gray.  But I just need help determining the third color.  Once we narrow down the colors to offer I’ll put them on the All Things Gloucester Site for sale- http://gmg.storenvy.com/

I’m taking specific color size combinations in the Dry Fit shirts through Thursday and then whatever the orders are will be what I order from the distributor for the first printing.  After that there won’t be any guarantees for stock in certain color/size combinations. it’ll be what is listed on the site for availability is what there will be after that.

The white has been a popular color.

So we’ll poll it to see what you guys think.  (Linda Colman gets five votes based on how many times she begged me to carry these)

Love, Pure and Solid From Fred Bodin

One of the highlights of the Block Party for me was a visit by these newlyweds. Phil is from Gloucester and Silvie is from the Czech Republic. They live in West Gloucester. Phil works in the corporate world, and Silvie is a holistic healer. She’ll be hosting an event called "Power, Women, & Wine," featuring healers, artists, and readers at Savour Wine and Cheese on September 19th. Call Silvie at 978-412-5400 for more info. It’s funny, 25+ years ago I hosted an opening at my first gallery in East Gloucester (next to the Last Stop). It was called "Ducks, Battleships, & Wine." Guy thing. Paul Morrison and Rubber Duck liked this: http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=487382774681119&set=a.115850935167640.27287.109638072455593&type=1&theater

Silver-spotted Skipper

Although there appear to be far fewer Lepidoptera on the wing this year, as compared to last year’s extraordinary numbers, one frequent visitor to gardens this summer is the Silver-spotted Skipper (Epargyreus clarus). Like butterflies and moths, skippers are members of the Order Lepidoptera and, like all Lepidoptera, they are distinguished from other insects by their scaled wings.

Skippers are characterized by, and named by, a darting (skipping) flight pattern. Skippers are also easy to identify from butterflies and moths by their antennae clubs that hook backward, like to a crochet hook.

The Silver-spotted Skipper caterpillars feed on members of the legume family, including Black Locust, Honey Locust, Hog Peanut, ticktrefoils (Desmodium) and False Indigo (Amorpha fruticosa)

Notice the white sploges on the skipper’s under wing. The sploges resemble bird poop and are thought to be an evolutionary defense against predatory birds.

Block Party Debris Field at Bodin Historic Photo

Fred writes-

Here’s my measure of our Block Party. This was a family event, and dicey weather was a factor. But the proof is in my sink. Big crowds, respectable sales, and boy were they thirsty. All of the wine glasses I had out were used, all the wine and beer was consumed, and it was a very successful event. One thing is for sure — we have a lot of happy drunken fruit flies in the back room.
