What is Happening Today in Gloucester?

I’m heading out the door to the dump and shopping. But I want to go to the Farmer’s Market and something else Joey posted that was happening today. Why doesn’t Joey have a calendar I can go to? But then I can already hear his response, “Use the search!”

But search for what? And then the dim lightbulb goes off! Search for “19th”. Check it out:

Look at that! A long list of Christmas Fairs. Shoot I’m missing the cleanup at Burnham’s Field breakfast. Gotta go.

[ps edit] And on tomorrow the 20th, guess what works?

Christmas is coming to Gloucester

“Kids Unlimited” on Main Street is just one of the stores that is decorating for Christmas. Walking past these windows on a cold November night makes Christmas feel just around the corner.

Christmas has come (somewhat early) to Kids Unlimited

The Hyper Consolidation of Our Fleet seems To Have Some Backlash According To Today’s Gloucester Daily Times Article

Gaines writes-

Fishermen’s ‘catch share’ letter sparks furor

Facilitated by officers of influential industry groups — including members of the Gloucester-based Northeast Seafood Coalition — the letter signed by the 109 fishermen, roughly a quarter of the current New England groundfishing fleet, included 15 from Cape Ann and asserted that elected officials, while responding to minority calls "amplified in the media," have put their businesses at risk with "a series of increasingly dangerous proposals."

These include accumulation caps, setting aside community quota, putting limits on trading catch shares across vessel and gear-type categories, according to leaders of the seafood coalition, which, since its 2002 founding, has grown to become the largest industry umbrella in New England.

Gloucester Mayor Carolyn Kirk said she was surprised by "many of the names on the letter supporting catch shares."

"The catch share system is collapsing," said Lang in a telephone interview. "What would motivate the fishermen to write the letter saying catch shares are fine with us?"

Back in 2009 I started to keep a collection the articles about the Hyper-Consolidation of our fleet in a thread on Cape Ann Online

It seems all those predictions made back then have been dead on.

GMG Tech Talk: Lifehacker Pretty Much Sums Up Online Music Services

This article from Lifehacker sums up online music purchases well.  I actually have used and continue to use all three and agree pretty much with everything in this article.  I used to buy everything through iTunes but now buy my music through the amazon store and then import them to iTunes because the music is usually about 10-30% cheaper on Amazon MP3.  Check out Amazon Music here

It’s a great article to get you up to speed.

Google Music vs Amazon MP3 vs iTunes: Which Online Music Store is the Best for You?

Google opened its new music store to all comers in the US this week, touting its partnerships with music labels and indie musicians, and its broad reach thanks to the Android Market. The new store has millions of songs for sale, but whether it’s a game changer, serious competition for iTunes and Amazon MP3, or the best online music store out there is another question entirely. Let’s take a look at each service based on its features.

Each music store is a little different. This showdown is all about the music stores that these companies offer—not their respective players, applications, or services. We can’t help but mention them in terms of usability and integration with the store and the user experience, but we’re going to try and focus on the features of the stores and steer clear of the bugs or quirks of each player.

DOWNTOWN GLOUCESTER HOLIDAY PARADE Sunday Nov 27th

The annual Gloucester Holiday Parade, a Gloucester tradition for many years, will take place on Sunday, November 27th at 3:00 PM. Volunteers will line up parade participants at the State Fish Pier on Parker Street at 2:00 PM and will guide them through downtown Gloucester and on to Kent Circle for the Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony. The parade is also the official welcoming of Santa Claus to Gloucester for the holiday season. At Kent Circle, children will have the opportunity to sit on Santa’s lap – a great photo opportunity for parents. And – as in the past – while folks are at Kent Circle, they are invited to sign holiday cards that will be sent to our troops overseas.

This year, the Downtown Gloucester Holiday Parade Committee is pleased to announce that Amvets Post 32 will be participating in this year’s Parade in partnership with the United States Marine Corp’s annual "Toys 4 Tots" drive. Look for the big pink elephant and Santa and his elves. Bring an unwrapped toy to the Parade or look for the drop off points around Cape Ann listed on Facebook. There will also be a drop off spot at Kent Circle during the Tree Lighting Ceremony.

This year’s Kent Circle Tree Lighting ceremony will feature festive music by the North Shore Bell Ringers as well as popcorn and hot chocolate provided by Lobsta Land and Ringo Tarr. This great community event is enjoyed by all ages. Along with the Parade, the tree celebrates Gloucester’s close ties to Shelburne, Nova Scotia that each year provides a tree to be lit.

Further Information/Contact Information
Rain Date: December 4th

If you are interested in participating in the parade with a Christmas float, team of walkers or musical group, contact 978-281-1227 or weather.vane@verizon.net. If you would like to make a tax-deductible donation, please send it in care of the Gloucester Fund, 153 Main St., Gloucester, MA 01930. Please note on memo line "Santa Claus Parade".

Any questions on the Toys for Tots drive can be addressed to Victor Anido at 978-879-7562.

Today the Moon does not rise!

Weather Underground says the moon will not rise today:

But not to panic. The “last quarter” moon rose last night just before midnight. 11:47 PM to be precise. At 11:55 PM  over the Rockport breakwater it looked like this:

The moon will not rise again until just after midnight tonight or 12:57 Sunday so there will be no “rising” on Saturday.

The quarter moon looks exactly like half a moon. It’s just a quarter of the cycle to new moon. If it stays clear you can see it set at lunch around 12:40PM but if you really want to watch it set get a bead on it about 30 minutes before setting as it will get pretty faint in the noon day sun as it fades into the haze on the horizon. If you’re logging in to GMG at sunrise just look up. The moon will be as high as it gets and a bit to the south.

Rubber Duck Fun Fact: The moon was a waxing gibbous moon until last night and now it is a waxing crescent.

Rubber Duck Fun Fact II: If we were standing on the moon where Neil Armstrong stepped out of the LEM right now we would have watched the sunset over the last day or so and the earth would look like just like the moon does right now except quite a bit bigger and very blue.

[morning edit] I was sleepy when I posted the photo and did not really look at it so possibly a small explanation:

It was kind of cold and my manual settings for shooting were a tad rushed so I shot a half dozen at different shutter speeds 2,4,8,15,30 seconds on a tiny tripod and went home to photoshop.  In order to get some foreground I shot out of the little chasm to the left of Angle Point. I didn’t notice until this morning that the rocks did show up in the photo. The reason for that is I took two photos, a long and a short exposure and layered them together to try to get a decent photo out of crap. The wicked over exposed one I put on top and then just erased the overexposed moon so the the underexposed moon would come through from below.

That explanation does not explain much does it? Maybe I need more coffee.

Did You Know? (Bull Wrestling Can be Deadly)

On September 18, 1892, long after Dogtown had ceased to exist as a community, James Merry died in Dogtown.  He had a 3-year-old bull that he had previously successfully wrestled to the ground on a few occasions.  He decided to try it again.  This time the bull was having no part of it.  The first marker shows where James Merry was first attacked by his bull.  The second marker, a short distance away heading toward Dogtown Road, is where James Merry died of his injuries.
