13,000 posts in just over three years. Imagine if that was a novel? How many pages is an average book?

I’d like to take this post time to admit to being guilty of something.

You see in all my rantings about the Eco Foodie Nazis I failed to consider the vast number of people who are really just trying to do the right thing.

I let the interaction with a single obnoxious extremist Eco Nazi foodie who was 100% wrong and refused to listen to any other viewpoint paint an entire group of people with the same brush.

There are many people just trying to make informed decisions and they should be applauded.

This is not to say that I agree at all with The Monterey Aquarium who puts out false information about codfish stocks being on the verge of collapse. They still suck.

I still believe there are Eco groups that are willing to take money from big companies once their group has any type of national voice and are used by these big companies to alter the public attitude toward certain groups be it small farmers or fishermen which decimate these small independent industries or communities so that big business can further their agendas.  And I don’t think these big companies really care about the resource in many instances, I believe they care about their own agendas at the expense of the independent fisherman or farmer. It’s ingenious really. Because they use naive greenies who are willing and eager to believe anything that the master cult like organization wants to shovel down their throat while the master cult like organization like PEW or Monterey Aquarium directors are pocketing huge sums of money from these corporations like big oil to push their agendas the willing.

I believe there are people who do care passionately about where they source their food and they should be commended. I just wish they weren’t misled by the Eco groups that are taking money to do the dirty work for big corporations under the guise of the environment.

Two of my least favorite types of people are extreme democrats and extreme republicans who can’t see any good in any policy except the one that their party tells them is right. There are good ideas on both sides of the aisle and finding the balance is the key.

Thank you Beth for reminding me that there are people just trying to do the right thing with your reasoned response.

Finally Someone Stands Up To The Eco Foodie Nazis

Richard Gaines Reports- What do you think the odds that the Eco Foodie Nazis change their position? My guess is that they will still call codfish unsustainable while they choke on their rabbit bones from their dead bunny stew.

Read on as government scientists call cod stocks recovered (unless of course you yourself are an Eco Foodie Nazi). We wouldn’t want you have to admit you’re a fucking sheep that believes whatever your spiritual foodie Nazi guru advisor has been telling you even though the regulators themselves call the stocks rebuilt to sustainable levels.

A Plea for Help

Warning: Rant Ahead…

Rockporters need help (Selectmen?  Economic Development Committee?  Joe Citizen? Are you listening?). Besides a few very hearty, hard-working souls, we can’t get any restaurant-owners to keep their establishments open year-round.   “But there are only 7,000 year-round residents!” I’m told.  Well, it seems to me that 7,000 is not an insignificant number – small towns all over America manage to support downtown restaurants based on a similar number.  My hometown in Ohio has 1,699 living souls occupying it – and ZERO tourists – yet it miraculously manages to support several eating establishments, from pizza places to family restaurants.  I know – it’s a chicken-and-egg thing.  Locals don’t come downtown to eat because there are so few places open and then restaurants don’t stay open because there is no one coming to eat.  And of course restaurant owners are used to gauging success by the numbers they do in the summer, so the off-season numbers must seem pretty paltry in comparison, even if the business is still profitable.

To add insult to injury, the Boston developer who owns the former Greenery Restaurant building, located in the heart of Dock Square and one of the only places where parties of four or more can be accommodated, has applied for a change-of-use approval for the location – he wants to turn it into yet another condo building!  Meanwhile, shop owners all along Main Street and even several on Bearskin Neck stay open year-round in spite of the fact that locals don’t show up in great numbers (because why bother to shop if there’s nowhere to grab lunch for you and your friends?), and their revenue is decidedly more dicey than the revenue of food establishments.  And then there is the Shalin Liu Performance Center, bravely forging ahead with programming throughout the entire Winter season.  Presumably someone is filling those seats and those same people consume food, just like the rest of us.  Where are they going to eat?  And finally, it has been crushing to see that The Coffee Shop (fresh doughnuts and Nisu bread!) was scooped up by a local restaurant-owner, only to be immediately shut down just in time for the holidays.  Merry Christmas, Rockport.

Restaurant owners: you’re killing us here!  And Rockporters: you need to support your local restaurants, especially the ones who stay open year-round: Bean & Leaf Cafe, The Red Skiff, and Hula Moon (let me know if I forgot someone) and thank them for their support.  It’s time that we Rockporters invest in our own downtown – or suffer the consequences.

Paddleboard Insanity Part I: SUP the Coast

I thought the Blackburn Challenge was, a challenge. I kayaked all the way around Cape Ann, about 20 miles. But what would you call adding ten miles and standing up on a paddleboard? That would be a little crazy right? Then how about doing that for a hundred days straight? That would be absurd. But Alana Horne of Magnolia has just notified GMG that her brother, Will Rich and his friend, Mike Simpson are going to paddleboard from former Gloucester High School hockey coach Dick MacNeil’s house to Portland, Maine on a paddleboard. But wait, didn’t Dick and Carol move to Key West??? That’s right. They did.

Will Rich (grew up in Bayview) and Mike Simpson are going to paddleboard from Key West, Florida, to Portland, Maine to raise money for the Wounded Warriors Project and SUP Cleanup.

This will be an ongoing series of articles of this adventure up the east coast. They start on March 1, 2011 and could be rounding up around Cape Ann before 4th of July. Much more information about this incredible journey in later posts. For more information just click the links below.

Cape Ann Museum presents Family Fun Day on the Second Saturday of The Month

The Cape Ann Museum is pleased to present a drop-in program for families with young children on the second Saturday of each month. Family fun day includes free admission for family members all day, family gallery guides for our special John Manship exhibition, art and history activities in the education room, and light refreshments served throughout the day. Stop by on Saturday, January 8, 2011 to learn more about the Quarries of Cape Ann! 

The Cape Ann Museum is located at 27 Pleasant Street in Gloucester. Hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and Sundays from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. The Museum is closed on Mondays, and on major holidays. Admission is $8.00 adults, $6.00 Cape Ann residents, students and seniors. Children under 12 and Museum members are free. The Museum is wheelchair accessible. Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce Annual Dinner Dance ~ Featuring “GARFISH”.

GARFISH will be performing at the Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce Annual Dinner Dance at Cruiseport this Saturday from 6:30pm to 10:30pm. This is a public invited event where reservations are required. This is a great event to get all dressed up and head out on the town. Always a popular venue for the business leaders and politicians to get together, socialize, have a few drinks, a great diner, a few more drinks then kick up their heels and have some fun.

Garfish will be performing dinner music along with classic rock-n-roll from the 1960’s & 70’s  and 80’s along with some current hits that will surely get the crowd to its feet. This is the first show of the New Year for Garfish since their sold out performance at the Gloucester Elks Lodge in November. Tickets are limited so please make your reservations early.

The band consists of Kevin Lopes on lead vocals, along with fellow musicians: Walter Piscitello on drums, Doug Comeau on guitar, Gary “Gar” Hiltz on bass and Jeff Worthley on piano & saxophone.

Garfish has played regularly at many area venues, including the American Cancer Society and Senator Bruce Tarr fundraisers along with other local benefits.  The band performs their own renditions of classic songs by Elton John, Jethro Tull, The Beatles, Gordon Lightfoot, Styx, Lionel Richie, Dropkick Murphys, Moody Blues, Joe Cocker, Billy Joel and others.
