The landscape and legends of Dogtown have inspired naturalists and writers
for centuries. On this walk, we’ll focus on natural history, with an eye to
the many interesting geologic features of this unique area. Registration
required, please email smd@ecga.org
Directions: From Route 128 North, take the third exit off Grant Circle, the
first Gloucester Rotary, onto Washington Street, Route 127. Drive 2.2 miles.
Just after the causeway that crosses the outlet for Goose Cove, turn right
onto Dennison Street. Drive to the end of Dennison Street and park at the
Greenbelt sign.

I wonder if the Red Sox will go after Wachusett Brewing for the obvious play on the Red Sox left field wall or if they got the blessing from the team first. I doubt they would just let them use the name without getting something in return, unless they got around it by calling it Green “Monsta” instead of “Monster” Interesting

I GREW up in a small town called Rockport, on the North Shore of Massachusetts, home to no more than 5,000 people when we first moved there, and dear to those who know it. It is a place of rugged natural beauty: a shore of granite outcroppings that jut into a cold blue sea, a movie set of a New England village with streets full of small shops and not a traffic light in the town.
My mother was so happy when we moved there from New Jersey that she used to make up songs about it and sing them as she literally skipped down to the ocean. It was a place she would always love more than anywhere else on earth, and it was easy to see why. For most of my childhood we lived, very cheaply, in a two-story, wood-frame house, with a yard full of trees and a wood behind us. We ate wild blackberries straight from the bushes that grew along the edge of our backyard, spent the summers swimming in abandoned granite quarries and skated over their black-green depths in the winter.
The town was almost unbelievable in its innocence, its sweetness. Rockport Junior-Senior High School, with 250 students, was too small to have any serious cliques and divisions; the same kids starred on the basketball team and in the school play. There weren’t even any locks on the lockers; no one ever thought to put them there. Little League games weren’t laden with adult expectations. Our champion Pigeon Cove Red Sox were coached by a couple of hippie-ish high school kids who piled us all into their old wrecks after each game to getice cream.

From North Shore Kid- Vote to Help Rockport Elementary Win $25k
Vote to Help Rockport Elementary Win $25k
Jessica Kagle, founder of Kestrel Educational Adventures, has entered the Green Awards contest on behalf of Rockport Elementary School for an award of $25,000 that will put them on the road to designing and building a nature center in the school’s new science room. You can vote once every day, and every vote increases the odds that this money will be awarded for this purpose.
The plan for the nature center is to combine outdoor play and discovery with an academic lesson plan that will help children learn about the environment around them while connecting with the natural world. Teams of students will plan investigations into the surrounding environment, then put together and maintain displays to aid in teaching others about the surrounding woodlands and the seasonal changes that occur in this unique habitat. The public will be invited to visit, and learn from presentations by the students who take part in the program.

Cape Ann Museum’s Saturday Showcase presents “A Visit with Louisa May Alcott”
In honor of Women’s History Month, the Cape Ann Museum presents “A Visit with Louisa May Alcott” on Saturday, March 26 at 1:00 p.m. Join us for a captivating living history experience with Jan Turnquist as Louisa May Alcott, the author of Little Women. This Saturday Showcase event is free and open to the public.
Jan Turnquist is the Executive Director of Orchard House, the Alcott family home in Concord, MA. Turnquist transforms herself into 19th century author Louisa May Alcott for a delightful and engaging experience. The author of Little Women brings us behind the scenes stories from her life: family friendships with Thoreau and Emerson; her unconventional upbringing in poverty; the family love that inspired her to write an American classic; and her vacation to Gloucester in 1868. From the youngest reader to the most sophisticated Alcott scholar to First Lady Laura Bush, audiences have acclaimed Jan’s performances, which are geared for ages 6 to 106. This interactive presentation is an inspiring experience for the mind and heart.
Introduced in September 2005, Saturday Showcase is designed to bring parents and children into the Museum to share enriching experiences. The focus is on the visual and performing arts, with strong ties to Cape Ann. Painters, musicians, dancers, and storytellers are among the artists who have presented programs. Funding to support the Saturday Showcase series has been provided by The Goldhirsh Foundation.
The Cape Ann Museum is located at 27 Pleasant Street in Gloucester. Hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and Sundays from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. The Museum is closed during the month of February, on Mondays, and on major holidays. Admission is $8.00 adults, $6.00 Cape Ann residents, seniors and students. Children under 12 and Museum members are free. The Museum is wheelchair accessible. I look forward to seeing you all, Saturday, to start our 2011 season! It’s going to be cool at 8 a.m. so you may want to bring some light gloves and a hat. Also anyone who has a scraper and/or sander please bring them. A shop vacuum would also be helpful. Hopefully we’ll have plenty of people and be done by noon. If we get 2-4 people to a boat the work goes quickly.
If you know new people who might be interested in rowing, this is good opportunity for them to get a foot in the door and get to meet us all!
