St. Ann Summer Enrichment Program
Hi Joey,
Well, School’s out, but fun’s definitely in at St. Ann’s. Yesterday we took a train into Boston and went to the New England Aquarium. Did you know that they have a new shark and ray "touch tank"? The kids loved to put their hands in the water and feel these creatures as they swam by. We stopped and kicked off our shoes at the Rose Kennedy Greenway and played in the fountains on the way back to North Station. If you haven’t been there in a while–GO! What a perfect day out with kids.
We’re planning lots of great science, cooking, chemistry activities and field trips–later on today we’ll be doing a parachute experiment and tomorrow Mary Connolly, a local beekeeper is coming by to tell the kids all about bees and to do a fun activity. On Friday, after we make and can some pickles , we’ll have our resident astronomer, Ginny Renehan, do a great solar system activity with us. Next week we’ll be baking bread, taking the train into the Boston’s Musuem of Science, among other things. But first, the kids are clamoring for fishing–Gotta go!…. it’s going to be a great summer! If any of your readers want in on the fun, check out the website.

Camera Porn
Have you heard of Lytro yet?- the new camera that captures “living pictures”. The way it works is it captures the entire field of light and in turn gives you the capability to choose what you want to be in focus. You can also share the image with other people and they can change the focus again themselves. It looks like it gives you the ability to change depth of field, without really knowing what you are doing. Pretty cool technology and I would love to see it in person, so I added myself to the waiting list. You can check out more images and info at http://www.Lytro.com

Relay for Life of Cape Ann
Relay for Life of Cape Ann Addison Gilbert Oncology nurse, Lisa Zellenka, RN, OCN, takes a break at this year’s Relay for Life of Cape Ann held last weekend to benefit the American Cancer Society. Throughout the year, Lisa and her entire family (ages 6-66) provide fund-raising opportunities through their team "Heaven Can Wait." Joining them were many other teams made up of family and friends to make the Ninth Annual Relay for Life of Cape Ann another successful event.
Teams were made up of six-15 members and the Relay began at 6 p.m. at Newell Stadium located at Gloucester High School. One member of each team remained walking the track from 6 p.m. June 17 until 9 a.m. on June 18. Following a survivors walk at 6 p.m., music, food and friendship were just part of this special evening. A luminarian ceremony took place at 9 p.m. listing all those being honored and remembered.
Traditions passed on through the generations
Great-great grandchildren of Salvatore Favazza
From The St. Peter’s Fiesta History:
In 1927 one of the Italian-American fishing captains, Salvatore Favazza, had a life-sized statue of St. Peter enshrined in the heart of the Italian district. Soon the fishermen and their families began to pray before this image of their patron saint. It wasn’t long before the wives and mothers of the fishermen began formulating plans for a religious procession to be held annually on June 29 in honor of St. Peter. Gradually, this annual procession grew to a day-long demonstration of faith to the protector of all fishermen.
