Interesting interview. It surprises me how few restaurants have a Facebook page. Top Dog in Gloucester has 500 fans and posts once a month during the winter. Nothing better on a cold January day than to get a message that there are only 74 days before TD opens. It’s like the sign coming into Rockport that changes that you know the bathrooms at the Info Booth are open. A sure sign of SUMMER.
But it’s chicken and egg. Got to post, make it interesting and have fresh content. Lobster Pool has a Facebook page but only 30 fans. They need to post a picture of some fried scallops and clams.
Twitter I am ignorant about since I haven’t used it. Why? Because I want my real life, my life in meatspace to not be so connected. I know that if I try it I would be kissing off another chunk of my day tapping on a keyboard. Gotta draw a line somewhere.

The other thing this social media does is keep restaurants on their toes.
Is the service a little slow? I found the best way to suddenly get amazing service is to photograph your food. 8)

I’m a web designer and I specialize in small businesses (Valentine-Design.com). I’ve been designing web sites for 7 years but these days keeping your site fresh is a big concern of most clients. I always suggest blogs which I am happy to set up and customize to coordinate with your site’s design. I also suggest using Facebook and Twitter and integrating them to your site. The cost is very modest (free for Facebook and Twitter) and it vastly improves your traffic.
One thing that people may not know is that having a blog is an excellent way to improve your search engine rankings. Fresh content is the answer and if you have a blog that you add to a couple times a week, then post the link to your Facebook page and Tweet about it, you not only reach more people but you increase your searchability.
Some people say they don’t have time for blogging but you don’t have to spend lots of time on it. Just consider how much you re saving in advertising by doing your own!
