Oak Grove

I suggest if you are ever near Oak Grove Cemetery,  stop by for a stroll through.  It really is a unique cemetery with a lot of history.

Here is the spectacular memorial for Emma Abbott, famous opera singer from the 1800s. She married Eugene Wetherell who is buried there with her.  Unfortunately there has been some vandalism to her memorial and others in the cemetery. At the entrance there is a plaque with a little history about the cemetery and where to send donations for the cemetery’s up keep.

  1. I grew up around here. We all called this monument ‘King Kong’s Grave’! It was often home base when we played hide-go-seek in the cemetery. We definitely did not ever vandalize Oak Grove. Never could figure out why anyone would.
‘Burnsie, the detective’ patrolled the cemetery and would chase us out. He’s buried there too – in a perfect location beneath one of the beautiful old trees which grace the area.
My great grandparents a great aunt and two great uncles ( veterans of WWI) are buried there.

  2. How few people in Gloucester have ever seen it! It’s too bad…there is a lot of history there and some astonishing monuments like the one picture here.
