This morning’s Gloucester Daily Times brought news that the state’s quarter will not be sporting The Man at The Wheel Icon even though it won in a landslide of votes, and is being bumped for some park that no one outside of Lowell has ever heard of.
You have got to be fucking kidding me!
Who the hell has ever heard of the Lowell National Park and does anyone really think that our State in any way should be associated with a park in Lowell rather than The Proud Man At The Wheel. This state was founded on Codfish you fucking idiots! What a laughing stock the state of Massachusetts will become if this travesty is allowed to happen.
They put it out to vote- The Man at The Wheel Won in a landslide, and now they are pulling the rug out from under us for a park in Lowell????
Lowell…………….. seriously??????????
Read the story from the Gloucester Daily Times here
Does The Park In Lowell Have a Song Like This Written About It????

Seriously dumb. How do you put a park on a coin?
Send Tierney a note to try harder:

Maybe just needs five bucks of stimulus money to be used to shine the old man up? Then it would be federally maintained.

Joe, i appreciate your coming to the defense of Gloucester, we all love and want our wonderful community to be recognized world and nation wide. However it is a bit irrational to call the Lowell National Park a place where ( who f—n cares); It is quite a nice National Park with a tremendous history. I agree it may not be as nice as our statue of (The Man); I suggest that if have you have not seen the park, that before you pass judgement, you visit it. Many woman made great sacrifices to manufacture textiles that helped build our great country, both to support the north during the War but to supply shoes and uniforms for our troops during WWl, WWll, and the Korean War. These women were mostly Irish immigrants hoping for a new future in America. These people also helped make our country, There is nothing wrong with the (park). Don’t condemn the choice because of your dislike of Lowell! Good day!

I never condemned Lowell or it’s Park. I condemned the decision to pull Gloucester’s Man at The Wheel(a much more fitting icon associated with Massachusetts) after it won in a landslide!
Where did I condemn Lowell?

I guess the real problem I have with the Lowell site is that they got no support from their citizens whereas the Fisherman’s monument got almost 3 times the population of the city in votes.

I was wondering why the Minuteman and the Georgia peach to name a few were able to be put on the last state quarters? Many of those quarters had state icons that have nothing to do with the fed.govt.
I guess the federal govt. must have given bailout money way back when to the Minutemen so they could keep their homes and they must own the land where the peach trees are!
You bet I am writing to them!

That is what we get for paying for our own statues.
Actually Lowell has a serious claim to be the starting point for the industrial revolution and mass production in America. Massachusetts has done a lot of important things.
However the vote was overwhelmingly for the Man at the Wheel and his industry started long before the cotton mills, which also have a serious downside in the way the cotton was grown.

What a joke! 5000 men gave thier lives to the sea including my grandfather and two uncles. Lowell may had the industrial revolution. We still have our industry going 400 years later.
I guess this would be one of those times you wish Teddy Kennedy was still alive. To fight for the fisherman and the families that supported this commonwealth. Bruce or Ann Margaret please fight for us on this one.

Well this is very disappointing and I’ve no idea how they’ll depict the park on a coin. But no need to trash the Lowell Park. I’ve been a few times and found the mills and history to be quite interesting. Not every immigrant moved here to fish. Plus the canal boat rides through the locks and up the Merrimac are great fun. I’m just saying…

I was really disappointed to read the article this morning. The problem is the statue isn’t managed federally so it can’t be used on the state coin. Why would they do that? They don’t want the icon on the coin to go away (I’m assuming). The Man at the Wheel will never go away and every person from Gloucester will fight to make sure that happens. It’s too bad they can’t change their minds and so quickly jumped to awarding some landfill in Lowell.
Again, I’m really disappointed and couldn’t wait to get my coin. … maybe next time?

Yet the Federal government manages the commercial fishing industry…into the state it’s in now! Remember what the Fishermen’s Memorial is, A memorial to over 10,000 Gloucestermen lost at sea. The federal ties are there, 10,000 countrymen lost in the effort to put food on our tables. If that doesn’t represent the spirit and heritage of not only our city but for the country itself…I don’t know what does!
Dear “Feds”, think of the lost fishermen..think of the families and maybe you’ll change your tune!

With all my travels and the long list of close friends, shipmates,Captians and there familys I have told about this prestigest place Which will memorialize not only Gloucester, but all fishermen, fisherwomen and there familys,to have it striped away is a stab at the Heart of a community. A little known fact about Me I am the youngest of 61 grandchildren on my fathers side who was one of 15 children 10 boys 5 girls all raised by and around comercial fishing.I am the only one who still makes my livelyhood as a fisherman as hard as that sometime proves to be.I write this on a120′ fishing boat on the west coast bound for Alaska, like the on I grew up on as a child and fish as a young man(f/v barnegat)out of Gloucester. My mothers father was lost at sea and her brothers all we also all fisherman.

Marty Meehan has more clout! This is totally appalling, who the hell cares about a twobit park that nobody’s heard of in Lowell.
I’m so sorry, but willing to help you fight for “Our Man” anyway I can.

My dear Lyle. Your making me admit this and for this I am not happy. I live in Lowell. Unfortunately. And yes, there is a lot of history here. But let me tell you something. A few years ago I just about lived in Gloucester. Every weekend I was in Gloucester for the whole year. Even in the winter. I never go to downtown Lowell unless I’m passing through to go somewhere. Now what does that tell you. Maybe that I’d rather be in Gloucester. No matter what anybody thinks about Lowell is not the point. The whole thing is what happened. It should not have happened. How would you like being told someone left you a big amount of money and then before you knew it, you were told oh guess what we were wrong. You’re not getting that million. How would you feel? As far as I’m concerned, that’s what happened to me. That’s how much I love Glosta. I may live in Lowell but my heart is in Glosta. And I still go to Glosta. And I wanted to move there but there was no apartment that could compare to what I’m paying. But then again I know the landlord and he’s giving me a break. I’ll tell you what. If it’s that great here, why don’t you move here and I’ll move in where you live. Sounds good to me. And I also voted for The Man at the Wheel. Joey’s right. The Man would of been much better. You may think I didn’t make you mention where you live. But you did. When I read your comment I figured the only way to get through to you or anyone else that feels like you do was to admit I live here. Now good day to you.

The Law’s the Law.
The America the Beautiful Coin Act of 2008 never had anything to do with representing the spirit of America; only with glorifying the ‘landmarks’ that need federal money to keep from going under.
If anyone in the Governor’s office had bothered to read the rules before they wrote the ballot, we probably wouldn’t feel such a keen sting of disappointment.
We were never eligible for this anyway.

Dissin the man!!!! Probably the govt decided that since they are destroying the fishing industry it wouldn’t look good for them to promote an industry they are determined to put out of business.
Stand strong folks…we know who won….maybe we should throw the new quarters over-board in front of the statue to protest!!!!!
YEAH!!!! Let’s do it!!!

Hey Nick, I didn’t know that untill today, which is Saturday. I just got the Gloucester Daily Times(actually, I got it Friday but was out of work because I was sick and didn’t read it untill Saturday Morning) I get it through the mail. Where I come from Lowell, I usually get it 2 to 3 days late. I still am going to write. After reading the article I felt if it had to do with the fact that it wasn’t federally funded, then Gloucester shouldn’t have been put on the list. I am so disappointed. The picture of the family holding the big coins they made, looked beautiful with the Man on the back. Also, Lowell has a lot of gang activity going on. I could tell you what happened next to my house but that’s to long a story to write down. Hell, I’ve already taken up a lot of room. I’m not happy or proud to live in Lowell and when I here people sticking up for Lowell I get mad because they don’t know all the facts. And people who live in Lowell and like it here are the ones that don’t have to put up with shit because they live in good areas. They’re thr rich ones. Hope I didn’t offend anyone but come to Lowell and I’ll take anyone on My tour. It won’t be of the canals.
