Things To Do- Homes For The Holidays Event 11/22 11AM-4PM

Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce

Eight fabulous homes in Magnolia will be open to the public on Saturday, November 22, for a self-guided tour from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Many of these beautiful homes will be professionally decorated for the holidays. “Homes for the Holidays” is a program of the Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce Businesswomen’s Division.

The Home Tour is being planned by the Businesswomen to support the Carolyn O’Connor Scholarship. Named for the first Chairperson of this active Chamber group, the scholarship benefits a woman who is changing careers or returning to the workforce after an absence and is in need of further education. The Businesswomen have given out three $1,000 scholarships since it was created in 2006. The group is hoping to raise enough funds to either increase the scholarship amount or the number of scholarships for 2009.

Tickets are $25.00 in advance and $30.00 on the day of the tour. Actual tickets and a map showing the location of the homes can be picked up on the day of the tour at the Magnolia Library, 1 Lexington Avenue, Gloucester, between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Contact the Chamber office to order your advance tickets.

MOMMA’S MAN

SHOWN AT 5:00PM (SHOWING NOVEMBER 21-23)

From the producers of “Half Nelson” and “Maria Full Of Grace,” “Mommas Man” chronicles the increasingly anxious dilemma of Mikey, a young husband and father who stops off at his parents’ loft during a business trip to New York and finds himself emotionally unable to leave. Unsure of his own motivations, he makes up excuses about why hes staying — his flight is delayed; his flight is canceled — but while his doting mother (the directors real mother) is more than happy to enable his procrastination, his father (the directors real father) grows suspicious of his son’s changes of plans.”A touchingly true film, part weepie, part comedy, about the agonies of navigating that slippery slope called adulthood.” -Manohla Dargis, The New York Times;”A beautiful, wise, shaggy, poker-faced comedy of discombobulation.” -Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly

THE POOL

SHOWN AT 7:15PM (SHOWING NOVEMBER 21-23)

Winner of the Special Jury Prize at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival, “The Pool” is the story of Venkatesh, a “room boy” working at a hotel in Panjim, Goa, who sees from his perch in a mango tree a luxuriant garden and shimmering pool hidden behind a wall. In making whatever efforts he can to better himself, Venkatesh offers his services to the wealthy owner of the home. Not content to simply dream about a different life, Venkatesh is inquisitive about the home’s inhabitants — indeed about the world around him — and his curiosity changes the shape of his future.”Gorgeous…glowing luminescence.” -Stephen Holden, The New York Times;”A truly independent gem of a feature. Informed by incisive observations about the class divide but more interested in the mysteries of the human heart, this gentle variation on neorealism is a delight on every level.” -Sheri Linden, The Hollywood Reporter

Art Auction To Benefit The Library’s Book Fund

.hmmessage P { margin:0px; padding:0px } body.hmmessage { font-size: 10pt; font-family:Verdana } Hi; Joey,

I was wondering if you could put a post about the Art Auction That’s going on at the Sawyer Free Libray on your site. There are over 60 paintings by Cape Ann artist’s Hanging in the Library’s Lobby. Most of the paintings are of Gloucester scenes. I have a small one of “Autumn on Good Harbor Beach”. The Silent Auction goes on until December 1st and then they follow up with a live Auction on the Paintings on December 3rd. Proceeds go to the library’s book fund. I enjoy your site very much, strangely enough I enjoy your photo’s of the “sleeping” Gulls.
I’m sure your post will help out very much.
Here’s a link to the librarys calendar page That explains the Auction;

Winning Good Morning Gloucester Logo Beth Swan

There were many submissions for the GMG Logo Contest and truthfully I loved every single one.

Each one had a different style that brought individual elements that I really liked and the separation between the winning design from Beth Swan at Black Swan Design and the rest was minimal but she hit everything on all points for me with the sunrise symbolizing Morning, the homie, and the simplicity of the design.

Thanks to Alicia Pensarosa, Cathy Tarr, Kat Valentine, Hedgie, and Lia Parisi for playing along.

Rosa Rugosa Life Cycle Update 11/16/08

I’ll update the Rosa Rugosa Life Cycle Slide Show for tomorrow.  Here’s the latest pic from the series-

Rosa Rugosa Life Cycle Update 11/16/08, originally uploaded by captjoe06.

I grew up one street from the Back Shore.

Although my mother might disagree, I’d say I was a bratty teen who didn’t appreciate the natural beauty that was steps from my doorfront. Part of that beauty was driving every single day along the Back Shore to get wherever we were going. If we left the house it was inevitable that we would be driving along the beautiful coastline that is the Back Shore.

It wasn’t until I went to college that I began to understand how blessed I was and how beautiful a place Gloucester is. Sure it is flawed in many ways but there is no place I’d rather be in the late spring, summer and early fall. Looking back it seems so crazy that I could have taken it all for granted but once you move away for a little stint and come home then you understand how lucky you were to call Gloucester your home.

Getting back to the Tribute To Rosa Rugosa-

First read this plant profile from Hort.net

There is nothing more beautiful than the perfection of a rose in mid-summer. The glorious fragrance wafting up from perfectly formed petals make it clear why this is the flower of choice for many people. Unfortunately, to obtain the perfect rose one must often have the perfect soil, a perfect watering regimen, and a lot of time. To those of you who don’t fall into this category, I offer you Rosa rugosa.

It may sprawl a little more than the hybrid teas that we see nowadays, and the flower petals tend to flop this way and that. All in all, it often has a kind of shaggy, unkempt air about it but that’s what gives this plant its character. Named for the wrinkled (rugose) surface of its glossy green leaves, this rose is a charmer that can soften and naturalize any area.

It’s a carefree rose, picky only about drainage. It will grow in salty conditions, shade, full sun, and poor soil, so long as it’s well-drained. Along the East Coast it even grows right in the sandy beaches!

There’s other reasons to grow this beauty besides the low maintenance. Large blooms cover this plant in early summer, giving way to sporadic blossoms up to the first frost. And Oh! The fragrance is sweet and pleasant, carrying for yards at a time. The blooms later give way to lucious brick-red rose hips so large that they look like cherry tomatoes. And if that weren’t enough, sometimes the yellow to orange to red fall color can be excellent!

If you have the space, this is the rose for you. There are many select cultivars available that will heighten the plant’s natural beauty. Choose one and you will never regret it.”

Can there be any debate about how poetic it is that we have Rosa Rugosa all along our shorelines and around town? This beautiful plant gives us so much beauty and fragrance amid the worst possible conditions. It thrives despite the cold winters, hot summers and even grows in the sand.

This line from the Hort.net’s profile really drives it home-

“All in all, it often has a kind of shaggy, unkempt air about it but that’s what gives this plant its character. “

Isn’t that just perfectly fitting for Gloucester?
