Pick #1:  Gloucester Harbortown Arts Festival 

Harbortown Arts Market is an eclectic marketplace of New England’s vibrant indie-maker scene, featuring more than forty of the best designers, artists, and vintage curators from Cape Ann and beyond. Happening on Gloucester’s working waterfront in the heart of the city, this market features FREE PARKING, gourmet food trucks, exceptional harbor views, as well as proximity to the outstanding food, galleries and special events of the city’s Harbortown Arts Festival happening Memorial Day Weekend.

The Harbortown Arts Market is happening Saturday, May 28th, from 10AM to 4PM, at 65-67 Rogers Street in Gloucester. It is a co-production of Harbortown Cultural District, Rusty and Ingrid Creative Company of Gloucester, and Mill Gypsies, and it is a part of the Harbortown Arts Festival.

Etsy Mill Gypsies are an eclectic caravan of artists, makers and vintage dealers who travel to converted, artist/retail mills throughout New England. We bring awareness and a sense of community to the amazing mills we visit! The Gypsies are making a special appearance at the Harbortown Arts Festival in downtown Gloucester, MA.

Pick #2: Free Family Fun Fest at Wolf Hollow

Pick #3:  Opening Weekend at Maritime Gloucester

Still and forever a favorite!  Maritime Gloucester opens this weekend and you should really make a point to stop on by.  So much to see and do for a variety of ages and one of my favorite gift shops ever….not to mention the incredibly easy-on-the-wallet price of admission!

Nichole’s “Family Picks of the Weekend” November 22nd and 23rd

Ok, peeps.  I’m giving you one Schrafft family faithful field trip in case you’re not up for anything big, but my other two picks involve going over the bridge.  Not just that bridge….but, also the big bridge.  We’re talking The Tobin Bridge, people.

 

So, Pick #1

If you’ve never gone, you should.  Wolf Hollow.

If you or your kids aren’t up for learning, this isn’t for you.  I didn’t mean that in a snarky way…I meant it for real.  Wolf Hollow is no zoo.  Your children should be of an age where they’ll feel like sitting and listening to a fabulous and informative talk about the wolves while watching them romp and play in their large enclosure.  For a couple more weekends they are open for Saturday and Sunday presentations, but starting in December they only do Sundays.  Ticket sales begin at 1:00 and shows are at 1:30. My boys “adopted” Bear and Angus and they’ve become a part of the family.

Pick #2

Saturday afternoon check out the “Free Day of Holiday Fun For the Whole Family” at the Citi Performing Arts Center Wang Theatre in Boston from 11-2. Cookie decorating, face painting, photos with Globe Santa, lots of arts and crafts, Legoland Discovery Center activities, a live holiday performance, and more!

Pick #3

AND talk about kick starting the holidays!!!!  The annual lighting of the Christmas Tree in Faneuil Hall also takes place on Saturday!  As a huge bonus, if you’ve ever wondered what 350,000 LED lights look like, you’ll be in luck, because it’s also the first night of BLINK “A light and sound Extravaganza” featuring music of the Holiday Pops! 

Stroll through Quincy Market and Faneuil Hall, get a bit to eat, drink some hot cocoa, listen to the music, and be amazed by the lights… and then count down as the huge Christmas Tree gets lit for the new holiday season.  Does it get any more festive?

Snowed in with Kids? Go to Wolf Hollow Today 1 PM

Cooped up in the house for the past few days? Well, it’s a beautiful day out there and what better kid trip then to take them all to Wolf Hollow. The Wolves will be ready for you at 1 PM.wolf3

Hours and Directions to Wolf Hollow. A short drive off Cape Ann. Take your camera and send Rubber Duck a photo of your favorite wolf and I’ll post it here at GMG. Way more fun then a dumb football game.

2013 “WolfStock” This Sunday 2-6 PM at Wolf Hollow

Feels like fall. Must be time to head to Ipswich and right after the turn-off to Crane’s beach, turn into 114 Essex Road (click for directions) to find yourself at Wolf Hollow this Sunday from 2-6 PM. Why? Because there will be wolves of course. And activities for your kids, food from the vendors, and beer from the Mercury Brewing Tap Mobile. Almost forgot, the Reggae Band Jah Spirit will be playing because after all it’s the 2013 Annual Reggae Fund Raiser at Wolf Hollow.

This is Nina and Jamie-Lynne Mezzetti (Nina is on the left), getting some neck scratches and licks traded back in January, photo by Zee Soffron. You may not get this close to a wolf on Sunday but they might howl for you. Wolves love reggae.

Until December 1st you can visit every Saturday and Sunday. Formal presentation of the wolves is at 1:30 PM so aim to get there by 1 PM. After December 1, Sunday only, weather permitting. (But this Sunday, remember, 2-6 PM.)

Here is a shot that Rubber Duck took last fall during a presentation:2wolfCheck out the size of those paws! Checking out the paw is an easy way of distinguishing Wolf from coyote or domestic dog. A wolf has some big ones. The next time you see tracks in the snow or mud on Cape Ann, measure the size of the paw. Was it a coyote, a coywolf, or a wolfote? Likely they will be a tad smaller than these paws.
