What Do You Love?

TRHcontest2013

There isn’t a soul on earth who doesn’t love a good story, and last year I came up with an excuse to hear some of yours. Over at The Roving Home we hosted a “I Love My Vintage _____” contest for February where participants were asked to submit a photo of a favorite vintage item along with a few words explaining the reason for their affection. We had entries ranging from a vintage VW car passed down from father to daughter to a cache of letters written between family members over decades to favorite dishware acquired piece by piece. It was a lot of fun to see and read about the different pieces people value and the contest reminded anyone who followed along just why it is that we love old things. (Not that most of us need a reminder…)

So at the risk of bothering you again, I’m going to ask (again): what is your favorite vintage item? It can be something you came across last week or something you have held dear for a lifetime. If you don’t mind sharing a picture and your story, submit it to our Facebook page HERE. If you’re not a fan of all things Facebook (and if this is the case I am deeply supportive of your position), submit it via email to therovinghome@gmail.com. The deadline for submissions is this Friday, the day after Valentine’s Day. Voting will begin on Saturday and continue for a week, and this year’s prize is a vintage trophy and some coffee and chocolate in honor of the season of love. If you win the contest but have no interest in shiny trophies, vintage or otherwise, hate coffee and despise chocolate, we’ll work out another prize that will make your dead heart (just kidding) pound with happiness.

Saturday Night: Vintage Goods for Home Interiors in Rockport

The Roving Home’s pop up shop opens at the Tusinski Gallery on Saturday night. Karen Tusinski, owner and artist at the Tusinski Gallery is hosting The Roving Home in conjunction with Earth Day with the theme Home (re)Cycled. The show at the Tusinski Gallery will include handmade pieces, lighting and more — all using vintage items. Decorating using vintage goods is a perfect way to increase environmental awareness — and where better to honor this idea than Rockport, the home of the best swap shop on the East Coast? 🙂

Hope you can come on Saturday, April 21st from 6 to 8pm. The pop up shop & show run through May 13th. The Tusinski Gallery is located at 2 Main Street in Rockport. Call 978-546-2244 or 978-501-3593 for more information or e-mail Sarah Kelly at therovinghome@gmail.com.

What’s Your Favorite Vintage Item?

The Roving Home’s next show is scheduled to open on April 21st. The idea behind the show (well, the idea behind everything at The Roving Home, really) is an exploration of the place that old things have in our lives, whether our items are valued in the marketplace or just for sentimental reasons.

One of the ways I plan to demonstrate the meaning of our old stuff is by featuring snapshots that readers send in of their favorite vintage item. So I would love it if you could take a few moments to submit a snapshot of something old in your house. Feel free to include yourself in the photo — and if you qualify as vintage, that works too — just make sure to include the vintage item as well as your decrepit self. The item in the snapshot could be something you inherited or a piece you just picked up at the thrift store yesterday. Something as small as a teacup or as large as your house itself. And please send in a couple of sentences stating why the item is significant to you. It would be fascinating to see which of your older possessions you find meaningful and why. And don’t worry about the quality of the photo – it’s not a most-beautiful-photograph contest, just a chance to see what matters to those of you who care about old stuff (like GMG contributor Alicia Pensarosa, for instance, who has a very cool blog featuring vintage stuff).

Just to make it interesting I’ve put together a contest for photo submissions over on The Roving Home’s Facebook page. You can submit your photo there and if your snapshot featuring a vintage item receives the most votes you’ll win a prize from our online shop. You can view more details about the contest HERE.

If you want to participate and aren’t interested in the contest, I would still love to have (and need) your photo for our upcoming show. Please e-mail it to me at therovinghome@gmail.com, or send me a message if you want to send a hard copy of your photo via the post office (I’ll send you my address). Of course you must be willing to have your snapshot used in the show and sending it in gives The Roving Home permission to display the item along with a few lines of explanation from you about why the item is meaningful. Thanks so much for your help, and I hope to see you joining in on Facebook or sending in a photo via e-mail!

New Auction House Opens in Gloucester!

A week from this Wednesday, on October 5, Walt Kolenda will be holding his first Gloucester  auction in the Cape Ann Industrial Park. I’ve been helping Walt open box after box of the contents of the estate of Wentworth Professor of Aviation, Lockhart Smith, of Saugus, MA. There are old (back to the early 1900’s) aviation magazines, original flight training manuals and handbooks, antique aviation collectibles, ephemera
( collectible written and printed matter), memorabilia, postcards, awards, etc.We unearthed a bunch of very cool old hobby model kits of airplanes, cars, ships, spaceships, robots, and more. There is plenty of antique/vintage glassware, lighting, pottery, porcelain, jewelry and who knows what else!

If you’re looking for furniture, the auction will include mission oak chairs, a solid cherry drop front desk with glass bookcase, a hand painted Asian cabinet, a Hoosier cabinet with Tambour doors, pine corner shelf, and other  really nice pieces.Walt moved to Gloucester in August of  2010, and although new to the area, has been in the auction/antiques business for about 30 years. He’s very excited to be holding his first Gloucester auction and plans on making it at least a monthly event, with special event auctions added as needed.

The monthly auctions will take place on the 1st Wednesday evening of each month at 6pm, inspection starts at 3pm the day of the sale.

There will be no buyer’s premium for this auction. Terms of payment accepted are cash, known checks and credit cards.

The excellent thing about the eclectic stuff for sale at Alexandra’s Bread Company is that although it is unique and ultra funky it is very reasonably priced.

Joni King Models A Vintage Dress At Bananas

While at Bananas interviewing Richard Leonard in pops this woman, Joni.

She is poking around and out of the frame of the video I was taking but Richard knew her well as she was one of his regular customers.  He had a pile of dresses put aside for her in her size, things he thought she would like, all waiting for her to show up as she apparently does weekly.

Now I know we have great merchants Downtown and this is just another example of how our community is special and places like Bananas and others cater on a personal level to our community.

You think someone at the mall is going to put certain sizes and styles aside for a customer and have them waiting for them to pop in to try on without notice?  Bravo Richard!  Bravo Bananas!  Bravo Gloucester!

Here’s Joni donning a vintage dress that just happened to fit her perfectly.

Bananas Vintage Martini Sets

Yesterday morning while swinging through town I saw Bananas open and I planned on popping in to see if FOB (friend of the blog) Debbie Clark was working.

Debbie wasn’t in but owner Richard Leonard was so I got to chatting with Richard about how long he had been in business with Bananas and what motivates him after all these years.  The video interview will be posted at 2:00PM today

There’s a lot of cool stuff that Richard has packed into his shop.  Among them are these vintage martini sets.

Looking for something fun to do to break up the routine?  Here’s a suggestion-

Go down to Bananas and get yourself one of these vintage martini sets.  Then invite a couple of your closest friends over, mix up some maritinis and get shmammered.  Sounds like a hell of an idea to me!
