Inner City Boys and Girls Club Kids Scuba Dive at Stage Fort Park

Hi Joey,

My name is Cassie French and I work for the Boys and Girls Club of Boston. This past weekend, (July 22nd) the Jordan Club of Chelsea went scuba diving for the first time at Stage Fort Park in Gloucester. We have 7 kids from the Jordan Boys and Girls Club in Chelsea participating in this program. This as an unique opportunity for urban children to have the chance to learn to scuba dive.

Dennis Monagle welcomes the Dejas to Minglewood again ~ always a great show

If you haven’t seen this enchanting duo, check them out tonight at Minglewood Tavern.  Rumor has it they may even perform at the next Block Party.  Stay tuned for word on that  . . .

If you want to be outside tonight, you have two great choices:  Remember, Conscious Reggae Band will be in Masconomo Park (rescheduled from yesterday) and Compaq Jazz Band at Stage Fort Park.  Get details and the full live music lineup here.

More Farmer’s Market craze

Thursday, 3-6:30 at Stage Fort Park! Don’t miss it! It’s not just food (as if delicious local food were not a sufficient reason to go…); there are also people selling cookbooks, pottery, and art; plus there are art activities for the kids, run by teens from Art Haven.

One of the things I like most about the Farmer’s Market is that the people who are selling things there are usually closely involved in the production of what they sell.  That makes a world of difference; you can see that they are proud of what they are selling, they really know it inside and out, and they are convinced of its value. Their enthusiasm is contagious!  And they often offer free samples.  So, be forewarned: you are likely to spend more money than you planned to.  But that’s OK, it’s supporting the local economy!

Here are some photos from last week. Click on the block of thumbnails to see a slideshow, or scroll down to see some of the photos larger without leaving the post.

Edibles flowers, believe it or not:

Peaches at the Farmer’s Market

From Arrowhead Farm.  Seen at the Cape Ann Farmer’s Market at Stage Fort Park, Thursdays during the summer, 3-6:30PM. Don’t miss it! I had one of these peaches, and it was juicy and delicious (and messy, the way fresh ripe peaches should be).

Don’t worry, I’ll be posting more tantalizing photos of the many and varied products at the market, so you won’t forget…

38 artists at 21 venues this weekend. How do you choose?

No, you can’t see them all.  You’re just gonna have to pick your favorites.  We can help.  First, you can see a complete live music lineup here.  And if you’re not sure who you might like, you can  see 15 Artists of the week in over 75 videos too.

Here are a very few suggestions in various genres (this is NOT an exhaustive list of who you might enjoy — see that here)

If you’ve never seen rocker Ned and the Big Babies, you should  catch them tonight at the Rhumb Line.  You’ll be dancin’ — believe me.

If you missed The Runaround Sound high energy ska, reggae, punk-rock band at the Boulevard on July 3, you can catch them tonight at Capt Carlo’s and tomorrow at the Rhumb Line.   You’ll get a workout if you go to both shows, so no need to go to the gym this weekend.

If you like New Orleans Jazz & Blues and you missed Henri Smith opening for Aaron Neville on June 30, you can catch him at the Brew Pub on Saturday (see Henri Smith videos here)  Henri is also opening the Gloucester Blues Festival on August 11.

Also on Saturday is the latest in T Max’s concert series at the Dog Bar.  This time he mixes bluegrass from Tom Eaton & Pick 3 with singer/songwriter Jon Waterman and his own style that’s a must-see but impossible to peg.

On Sunday music begins at 10:30am at Seaward Inn in Rockport and continues all day with two free outdoor concerts: Michael O’Leary’s Celtic music at Halibut Point State Park at 2:30 and the Compaq Big Band at Stage Fort Park at 7pm.

Remember this a very small list of a few highlights.  Check all shows before you decide where to go.

Get Free Dog Massage this Thursday!

Gloucester dog park

The Friends of Gloucester Dog Park will be staffing an information table at the Visitor’s Center at Stage Fort Park on alternate Thursdays from 3-5:30pm this summer, starting July 12.  They will have lots of activities and dog park signature merchandise for sale.    There will be raffles complements of Animal Krackers, Essex Bird Shop and Pet Supply and Petco.

First in the lineup of great attractions on July 12th David Feldman of Skillful Hand, a certified dog massage therapist, will be giving FREE dog massages and talking to pet owners from 3pm-4:30pm.  If you are heading to the Farmer’s Market, come on over! (David will be back for a return visit on July 26, so mark your calendars now!)

You are also encouraged to walk around the dog park and let your best friend ‘sniff’ out the site. It’s a great opportunity to get an up close and personal glimpse into the entire process behind the makings of Cape Ann’s first dog park. Come see for yourself what the excitement is all about.

Building a dog park is a community effort! Get involved by contacting gloucesterdogpark@gmail.com or visiting www.gloucesterdogpark.org.

Earth Day Activities a Stage Fort Park From Patti Amaral

Hello Joey, Here are some photos that highlight the Earth Day activities a Stage Fort Park yesterday. By the end of the day, the volunteers had picked up a small truck-load of discarded items. The volunteers did not come empty handed, they brought lots of fruits and veggies to donate to the Food Pantry. One of the best moments was when the we were introduced to the recycling dog! Thank you for helping us get the word out. It was a great day! Patti Amaral

Gloucester Dog Park Approved at the City Council Meeting Last Night

DOG PARK

design plans at www.gloucesterdogpark.org.

From GloucesterDogPark.org-

The proposed site of Gloucester’s first dog park is an under-utilized, overgrown section of Stage Fort Park. The topography, trees, and location make it an excellent choice to transform this virtually unused 2 acre site into a fantastic recreational area.

Dog Park Sections:

· Off-leash Large Dog Area – for large and small dogs comfortable around all large dogs.

· Off-leash Small Dog Area – for small dogs under 25 pounds

· Walking Path Area – on leash area for dogs that do better on leash and for people with strollers and young children.

· Special Needs & Training Area – for dogs not ready for the dog park and need special training and time to adjust. Also an area to hold training, education and adoption events.
