Last night’s concert was a entertaining mix of music, dance, and comedy. We have some great talent in Gloucester.  A huge THANK YOU to all who gave their time and energy to raise money for Doctors Without Borders who in turn will provide needed aid to the Haiti people.

How to Buy a Digital Camera

Many people have asked how to choose a digital camera. This article should help.

From Digital Photography School

1. Determine what you need

A mistake I see some digital camera buyers making is that they get sucked into buying cameras that are beyond what they really need. Some questions to ask yourself before you go shopping:

  • What do you need the camera for?
  • What type of photography will you be doing? (portraits, landscapes, macro, sports)
  • What conditions will you be largely photographing in? (indoors, outdoors, low light, bright light)
  • Will you largely stay in auto mode or do you want to learn the art of photography?
  • What experience level do you have with cameras?
  • What type of features are you looking for? (long zoom, image stabilization, large LCD display etc)
  • How important is size and portability to you?
  • What is your budget?

Ask yourself these questions before you go to buy a camera and you’ll be in a much better position to make a decision when you see what’s on offer. You’ll probably find the sales person asks you this question anyway – so to have thought about it before hand will help them help you get the right digital camera.

Sharon’s Online Marketplace

The calendars during the holiday season were a huge hit! (Thank you Amanda, Jane, and everyone who bought one!) I’m working on the 2011 calendars now to have them ready for mid-summer. If you have any thoughts on a particular subject that might be popuar, I’d love any suggestions.

You can still get the 2010 calendars here if you need a small host(ess) gift for those late Christmas parties!

Also I have an online marketplace where you can buy all kinds of items with my Cape Ann photos on them. There are prints, mugs, t-shirts, edibles, puzzles, etc. Lots of fun stuff and more to come! Check it out for gifts throughout the year.

Here are a few items you can purchase….

If you see a photo on my website that is not offered in the marketplace, just let me know and I’ll check on its availability.

Thanks so much for your continued support!              ———Sharon

What causes this?

Many readers have commented on the photo earlier this week. We’ve all seen this illusion on the horizon, but I’m not sure what causes it. What’s the explanation? Thanks in advance!

Really dumb observation

My battery-operated toothbrush sounds like there is a Tuvan throat singer (the guy on the left) in my mouth.

Another Photoshop try

Played around with this one for a while. There are so many steps to getting a photo the way you want it! Digital photography often is as labor intensive as traditional methods.

Skiing in Ravenswood

Yesterday I spent the most peaceful morning cross-country skiing in Ravenswood Park. Although there were several cars in the parking lot, I saw only a handful of people on the trails.

The sun and trees created giant shadows on the snow. The quietness filled the air. The only sound was the flap of my skis on my boots. I followed the Quarry Rd. trail where this photo was taken. The familiar landscape of my mountain bike rides was transformed into a winter wonderland.
