Where Are the 1,000 Great Places in Massachusetts?

From James Caviston-

Hi Joe,

This is James Caviston from seARTs writing to ask a favor. I know you have been running a lot of popular votes and poles recently, but I would like to ask you to put one more in the GMG blog. The Massachusetts Cultural Council funds many arts and educational non-profits in and around Gloucester. They fund the best known institutions like the Cape Ann Museum and the Gloucester Maritime Heritage Center.

They also fund the smaller organizations as well. Through past funding to seARTs under the John and Abigail Adams fund, we have been able to partner with the City of Gloucester Committee for the Arts, the Gloucester New Arts Festival, the Cape Ann Artisans and the Rocky Neck Art Colony (the MCC’s support made possible the Captains Courageous Festival that Manny covered so incredibly well). In short the MCC has meaningfully supported Gloucester and the Cape Ann region.

They have put out a poll to find out what residents of the Commonwealth think are the great places in Massachusetts. The goal, like all MCC programs, is to draw attention to Gloucester’s many assets and stimulate the economy through cultural tourism. So I hope everyone who sees this will vote early and often.

Thanks again for offering such a terrific service to the community. Like everyone else, I check GMG first thing everyday.

James Caviston,

Where Are the 1,000
Great Places
in Massachusetts?

The Commonwealth of Massachusetts invites residents from all 351 cities and towns across the state to nominate their favorite places. The nominations will be considered for a final list of 1,000 Great Places in Massachusetts to be announced in May.

The Great Places initiative will celebrate what is unique about the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, its communities, and its people. It also aims to stimulate the economy by boosting visitation to the state’s wide range of exceptional historic sites, cultural venues, and natural landscapes.

The deadline for nominations is April 15. Tell your members, visitors, and fans to nominate their favorite place here: http://www.massvacation.com/1000/index.php

Check out Chronicle on WCVB-TV on Monday, April 12 at 7:30 pm for more on 1,000 Great Places.

from the Gloucester Daily Times-

An award-winning playwright and humorist who has become a leader in securing money for cultural development will serve as guest speaker tonight as the Cape Ann Society for the Encouragement of the Arts, seARTS, hosts its seventh annual meeting.

Dan Hunter, a founding partner of Hunter Higgs LLC, an advocacy and communications firm specializing in cultural nonprofit organizations, will serve as chief speaker for the event, set to run tonight from 6 to 8:30 at Rockport Art Association on Main Street in Rockport.

Hunter is the former executive director of the Massachusetts Advocates for the Arts, Sciences, and Humanities (MAASH), a statewide advocacy and education group.

As MAASH director, Hunter successfully campaigned for cultural facilities grants and an increase of 70 percent in overall cultural funding during a time when the total state budget increased by only 14 percent, noted seARTS board member Jacqueline Ganim-DeFalco.

Manny happened to be casually strolling through town yesterday and by golly wouldn’t you know that everyone is so excited about the upcoming Captains Courageous Festival organized by seARTS on March 6th from 9:00AM-9:30PM that he started snapping photos of people reading the classic in anticipation.

Check out the incredible effort Manny put into this video capturing many of Gloucester’s characters-

From Manny-

Here’s the video of over fifty people reading Captains Courageous, at different establishments in Gloucester .  With the storm yesterday, I think most people may have curled up next to a warm fire and did some reading.   Gloucester Coffee Shops, like the Lone Gull and Pleasant Street Tea house, had everyone reading

Vote For Gloucester

This just in from seARTS-

Vote For Gloucester, originally uploaded by captjoe06.

 Help Governor Patrick Choose

In a successor to the 50 States Quarters Program, the U.S. Mint, in a  nationwide program, has asked Governor Patrick to select one preferred and three alternate Massachusetts national sites to be featured on the reverse of a quarter. Beginning in 2010, the Mint will release five new quarter designs annually based on the order in which the selected sites gained federal designation. Governor Patrick is calling on the people of Massachusetts to help with this decision.

“Our Commonwealth has many great parks and historically significant sites,” said Governor Patrick. “It will be fun to let everybody help choose the one to submit.”

One of the sites included is Gloucester’s famous Man at the Wheel Statue created by sculptor and photographer Leonard Craske. This statue not only commemorates Gloucester’s maritime heritage but also its distinguished arts history. Please visit the voting site and place a vote for Gloucester!

Go to:  America’s Beautiful National Parks Quarter

Scroll down the list to Essex County and click next to Gloucester Fisherman’s Memorial, Gloucester.

You can vote as often as you like but all voting must be done by 5:00 p.m. February 26, 2009.

Thank you.

Things To Do- seARTS Presntation At Cape Ann Community Cinema Dec 7th 4:30PM

After rounding up musicians from a thriving immigrant neighborhood in Rome to create the eclectic Orchestra di Piazza Vittorio, filmmaker Agostino Ferrente captured their heartwarming individual stories in this captivating documentary. The film reveals that, for many members of the group — which is made up of Muslims, Jews, Christians, Hindus and atheists from 11 countries — making music is as second nature as breathing. Community Art Project At The Green House-A Note From Emily Sinagra

Hi Joey:
It was great to run into you at Alexandra’s. Thanks for taking pictures of the art installation project at Intershell which was made possible through a PWA Grant from SeARTS. The purpose of the project was to enable people of all ages to engage in artistic collaboration. The inspiration and literary link for the project was a story by Captain R. Barry Fisher called “The Wharf Rat’s Tale”. About four boys growing up in Gloucester during the Depression. In the story, the boys were given a couple of old Dories and had to salvage bits and pieces to make one of them seaworthy. It is a coming of age story- the boys overcome obstacles and become real “Dorymen” and sail off into the future. It made me start wondering, What do we want to salvage from our past to take us into our future? What is the ‘coming of age’ story for kid’s today? Where are we going as a community? No better way to explore these questions than through art. The event began at 10:00 and lasted all day–there were parents and small children as well as teen agers. All making their mark. Some people came just to observe. So it was an interactive artistic, performance piece. I had a copy of the story on the wall and used pieces of the text as creative prompts. People could do anything they wanted to do. There was was no agenda other than the context of the building and it’s location at 54 Commercial street. I am hoping to display these panels in a more public place soon. Also, to develop other collaborative artistic events, using theater and art, to be performed in non-traditional venues. I think it is especially important that kids have a chance to contribute and demonstrate their vision. It is also important to recognize the support of businesses like Ben’s Paint who donated all the paint and supplies and Intershell who donated the use of the building. THANK YOU!
