Fishtown Players Theater announces its production of Conor McPherson’s instant classic, The Seafarer, is to be performed starting April 19th with a pay as you can performance at The Gorton’s Theater (home of Gloucester Stage Co.) at 267 E. Main Street, Gloucester.

Additional performances on 20, 21, 27, 28 at 7:30 pm and Sunday the 22 & 29 at 3 pm. Tickets are $18.00 for adults and $15.00 for seniors and students. The Seafarer is about redeeming grace. How far would you go to save your soul? Sharky (the protagonist) has hit rock bottom and the play is about his struggle to overcome all odds including the devil himself-to do right by his friends and family.

McPherson (also wrote The Weir and St. Nicholas) is heralded by many critics as the best playwright of his generation. The play stunned audiences and critics in both London and New York and won the Olivier Prize for best new play in 2007 and received numerous Tony nominations.

The playwright uses levity as a bridge to a more profound meaning. The play holds audiences in stitches and stunned silence throughout. This production is co-directed by Jay DiPrima and Michael McNamara. The players are; Jay DiPrima, Rory O’Connor, Michael McNamara, Bob Karish and David Adams.

If possible, can you please get the word out about the 25th Annual Walk of Gloucester Pride Stride.  Walkers can visit our website www.GloucesterPrideStride.com to download a pledge sheet, or non profits can  download and email a registration form. 

The 25th Annual Gloucester Pride Stride Walk will begin at noon on Sunday April 29, 2012 at Stage Fort Park. The 5 mile walk will start and finish at Stage Fort Park, while enjoying scenic views of the Boulevard, Rogers Street, State Fish Pier, Main Street & Boulevard. We look forward to your participation on behalf of your favorite Cape Ann Non-Profit.  We will start collecting pledges at 10:00 A.M. in the  Visitor Center.  If you are unable to join us on the 29th, you can still collect pledges for your Cape Ann Non-Profit and bring them to Becky Sumner at The First National Bank of Ipswich located in the Walgreens Plaza, or mail them to us.  A donation may be mailed to the Gloucester Pride Stride Committee to help defray the costs of the annual walk.

Be prepared for a disaster: Join the Gloucester Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) sponsored by FEMA

In a major disaster, emergency services cannot be everywhere at once, but properly trained citizens can be prepared to help themselves and assist their neighbors while waiting for the arrival of professional public safety personnel. 

FEMA’s Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Program educates people about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. With this training, CERT members can assist others in their neighborhood or workplace following an event when professional responders are not immediately available to help.

People who go through CERT training have a better understanding of the potential threats to their home, workplace and community and can take the right steps to lessen the effects of these hazards on themselves, their homes or workplace. If a disaster happens that temporarily overwhelms local response capability, CERT members can apply the training learned in the classroom and during exercises to give critical support to their family, loved ones, neighbors or associates until help arrives. When professional help does arrive, CERTs provide useful information to these professionals and support their efforts, as directed, at the disaster site. CERT members can also assist with non-emergency projects that improve the safety of the community and have been used to distribute disaster education material and provide services at special events such as road races, parades, sporting events, and more.

The Gloucester CERT team has already been deployed several times to assist in Gloucester’s Emergency Operations Center and in their neighborhoods during times of severe weather incidents.  Our volunteers have been trained in emergency shelter operations, emergency communications and caring for animals during emergencies.

There are many jobs within CERT for someone who wants to be involved and help. During and following a disaster, CERT members are needed to assist at the EOC with documentation, help care for shelter residents, etc. Other CERT activities are more field related such as pumping cellars, filling sandbags, clearing snow and the like. Non-disaster related team activities may include keeping databases, developing a website, writing a newsletter, planning activities, helping with special events and organizing exercises and activities.

CERT training is open to anyone 18 years or older. Training classes will begin on Wednesday, May 9^th 7:00 to 9:00 pm at the Fuller School Library, and continue once a week for 6 weeks.
