ART HAVEN NIGHT AT JALAPENOS!

Join us tonight for some appetizing Mexican food at Jalapenos (located at 86 Main St. in Gloucester)!!  If you’re on the go and don’t have time to sit and eat there, order some take-out.  Ten percent of all profits will be donated to Art Haven so bring family and friends.  We’re offering a raffle for a FREE session of class at Art Haven to anyone who comes so don’t miss out!  We look forward to seeing you all there!!

We have a few big events coming up in the next month
that we wish you all to be a part of: 

CAPE ANN PARTNERSHIP FOR CHILDREN & FAMILIES: On November 16th from 6-7:30 there will be an informational meeting at Pathways for Children on various programs provided for children and families provided by the Cape Ann community.  It will include dinner and presentations from Art Haven, Cape Ann Families, Cape Ann Museum, and Cape Ann YMCA.  Please join us!

SPECIAL NEEDS OPEN HOUSE:  Join us in our introducing of our Special Needs class! On December 8th from 5:30-7 come meet the teachers and partake in an art activity!
WORKSHOP WEEKS: December 6th to the 17th, we’ll be running workshops with things like block printing, ornament and card making, and holiday mugs!  More information to follow!
BUOY PAINTING AND ICE SCULPTURE:  The holiday season is right around the corner!  Make sure to mark your calendars for our buoy painting and ice sculpture event!  Buoy painting starts Friday, December 10th from 3-7 and continues on Saturday, December 11th from 10-4.  We look forward to celebrating with you all!

Thank you to everyone who donated and participated in our 3rd Annual Pumpkin Carving Contest!  It was a blast!  Your continued support is what keeps us going.  We truly appreciate it.

The Rocky Neck Art Colonyis fortunate to have award winning photographer and former Artist/Teacher in Residence, Karin Rosental, showing her work at the Residency Studio (51A Rocky Neck Ave.) tonight from 6:30 to 9pm. Karin’s work has been exhibited in galleries and museums worldwide, and is in numerous collections including the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, the Brooklyn Museum, Harvard University’s Fogg Museum, The International Center of Photography, Polaroid’s National and International Collections, and the Allan Chasanoff Collection.

The Best of Rocky Neck

Rocky Neck Art Colony Member’s Exbition, October 2 to 16

The Rocky Neck Art Colony invites all art colony artist members to submit your best work to this exhibition, dedicated to celebrating and championing creative talent on Rocky Neck and in the Rocky Neck Art Colony.

Submission Info:
  • All Rocky Neck Art Colony artist members are invited to submit one piece up to 40” wide or two smaller pieces not to exceed 40” in width of their Best Work.
  • Media accepted: painting, mixed media/assemblage, sculpture (including ceramic sculpture and metalwork), printmaking, drawing, photography. The artist should provide a sculpture stand for large sculpture. The gallery cannot accommodate installations or video (unless all self-running equipment is provided by the artist).
  • Work must have been completed within the last three years.
  • Accepted work must remain with the exhibit until the exhibit closes.
  • All two-dimensional work must be wired for hanging. No sawtooth hangers or clipframes.
  • Everyone submitting work will be asked to gallery sit for two hours during the show
  • Download application form (http://mail.rockyneckartcolony.org/Call_for_Art.pdf) and mail or drop it off at the Rocky Neck Gallery, 53 Rocky Neck Ave., Gloucester MA 01930 by September 15.
  • There is no entry fee. Work may be for sale but it is not required.
  • The Art Colony will take 30% commission on any work that is sold.
  • The hanging committee will make every attempt to hang all work submitted but may have to return some pieces due to lack of space or improper framing.
  • Drop off work on Thursday, Sept. 30, 6 to 8pm or Friday, October 1, 10am to noon.
  • Pick-Up of Unsold Work: Sunday, October 17, 10am to noon.
  • Reception: Saturday, October 2, 5 to 8pm. Donations of food or beverages will be appreciated but are not required.

Ocean Alliance News Announcement from Iain Kerr

I am pleased to report that the RV Odyssey is in the Gulf of Mexico. She left Portland Maine on July 17th and while she had a rocky trip down the East coast, it was a very productive trip. The University of Southern Maine science team (lead by Dr. John Wise) have proved the viability of our aft cabin laboratory by developing TWO cell lines while at sea, Humpback whale and Fin whale. To the best of our knowledge no one has developed cell lines from these whales before and certainly not in a vessel at sea – this is GREAT news.

The Odyssey will be in the Gulf through October 2010, we will then lay her up over the winter and go back to the Gulf in May through August 2011. We plan to spend a minimum of 3 seasons in the Gulf to see how the oil and dispersants are moving though the food chains and the direct and indirect consequences of oil and dispersants on the whales in the region.

Thanks to the generosity of the Campbell Foundation (equipment) and the Ocean Foundation (airtime) the RV Odyssey now has a V Sat communications system on board. The V Sat means that the Odyssey is connected to the world 24 hours a day for a flat rate.

So as to be able to respond to this new connectivity – last week we launched a new website (thanks to the incredible efforts of Ilana and Shirish). Same address as before www.oceanalliance.org but it is now being updated daily. Please check out the news reports, blogs and stories from the Ocean Alliance and the Odyssey in the Gulf. Looking for artist whose painting blew into the harbor

I was taking a walk on Friday at the Railways and a woman came by…a painter. She had been on the pier and the wind swept her painting into the water!!!! She’s about 40 years old I guess and as I remember sandy colored hair. She was pulling a wagon with all her painting materials in it. About 20 minutes after she left a man came up and his name is Elisio Braz 18 Honeysuckle Road 978-281-3883. He had fished out the painting.I am hopring that someone in the art colony might know this woman and could pass on this message. Thanks!   –Ruth Mordecai

Kate Somers was honored recently with two prestigious awards. She received an award for Most Creative for her Horribles Parade floats and she received the People’s Choice award in watercolor at the Magnolia Art Festival.

Our Distinguished Artist/Teacher for this season is painter, Ilana Manolson. She will give an opening talk at the Cape Ann Museum on August 1st at 3:00pm. The event is free and open to the public.

A reception will follow on Rocky Neck at the Goetemann Gallery, 37 Rocky Neck Ave. Monolson will be in residence on Rocky Neck for workshops and teaching August 9-13 (schedule of events to be announced soon).

Performers and entertainers include:

  • Three Sheets to the Wind, a group of local musicians and Schooner Adventure crew members, are preserving the history of maritime work songs (chanteys) and forebitter songs.
  • Carol St. John will explain how graphology (the study of handwriting) works, talk about appropriate uses, and call for participants to contribute handwritings to demonstrate its validity for a fun, friendly, positive event. 
  • Rick Drost began singing with a Kingston Trio-style group in high school, continued in a small folk group in college, then a glee club, and an opera chorus. He started writing and singing around coffeehouses in DC and New England in the ‘70s, finally settling in Cambridge, MA, where he was a member of the folk-rock group Parts and Labor. He performs at least once a week, wherever he goes.
  • Catherine Strisik, daughter of well-known Rockport artist Paul Stisik, has been active in the writing community of Taos, New Mexico, for over 26 years. Her poems have appeared in numerous publications including The Cafe Review, The Comstock Review, Peregrine, Northwest Review, War, Literature and the Arts, and others. Her new book, Thousand-Cricket Song, from which she will be reading, is receiving much acclaim. This book of poetry gives a glimpse, through Strisik’s eyes, into Cambodian life 25 years after the Khmer Rouge slaughter of 1.7 million Cambodians through execution, disease and starvation. "Here is a perfect, clean and delicate (powerful and often terrifying) work of art," said John Nichols, author of The Milagro Beanfield War.
  • Laura Dow / Zumba. Working out can be healthy, rewarding, and beneficial; it can be lots of things, but it’s never been known to be an exhilarating experience… until Zumba! The Zumba program fuses Latin rhythms and easy-to-follow moves to create a fitness program that will blow you away. Laura will present three Zumba rhythms ~ Salsa, Tango, and Flamenco~ to give you a taste of the program that’s taking the world by storm.

Beaux Arts Ball Art Show, Deadline August 4

A Beaux Arts Ball art show will be on exhibit at the Rocky Neck Gallery from August 5 to 12. Attendees will vote on their favorite piece (at the auction) and a "People’s Choice Award" will be awarded at the Ball. To be part of this show, please contact Brenda at at 978-282-1346  or brendamalloy@hotmail.com as soon as possible to reserve your space.

Artwork Requirements:

  • All media is accepted including all 2D, 3D, and fine crafts
  • There is no theme … any subject or style is accepted
  • Two dimentional work should be a square format of any size
  • Work must be completed within the last two years
  • Bring work to the Rocky Neck Gallery by August 4. It will be on display for one week at the gallery prior to the auction.
  • All work must be labeled on the back with the artist’s name, title of work, and medium.
  • "Log-in" your artwork on the Beaux Arts Ball Artwork form available at the gallery.
  • Artwork must be wired and ready to hang

Beaux Arts Ball Silent Auction Donations

The Silent Auction, in conjunction with the annual Beaux Arts Ball, will be held on Thursday, August 12 at The Studio Restaurant on Rocky Neck.

To donate any Auction Item other than original artwork, Download the Auction Donation Form. fill it out and drop off along with your auction item at the Accommodations on Rocky Neck office.

We thank you for your support in this endeavor. The silent auction is the single biggest fundraiser for the RNAC and we greatly appreciate your time and effort to make it possible.

International Dory Race News From Jimmy T

We are only a week and a half away from the first elimination races! June 5th rowers will be putting it all on the line to see who will eventually represent the U.S. in the International Dory Races on the 19th. We encourage any and all rowers to participate, be part of the racers and experience the camaraderie of all the competitors!

Volunteers needed!

We need people to help carry one of the new boats at the Dory Shop on Harbor Loop. This Saturday at 1 p.m. you will be paid in victuals and libations immediately following the move! (Gino is cranking on the dory building and we may be racing in the new boats this fall!!!)

We also need help during the eliminations and will be needing rowers to teach kids to row in early June.
