Manchester Athletic Club Strengthens Fitness Program with New Director.
Manchester Athletic Club is strengthening its fitness program with leadership from Nan Gorton. Gorton was recently chosen to helm the businessâ growing Fitness Division, which includes Manchester Athletic Club in Manchester by-the-Sea, MA, MAC Fitness in Rowley, MA and MAC Fitness in Gloucester, MA.
Gorton has been a staple at Manchester Athletic Club for the past seven years as a fitness trainer and co-owner of Hilltop Training, a popular running program among members. Most recently, she launched North Shore Sports Performance Institute (NSSPI), which offers sports performance training to kids 10-18 years old. She comes to the position with a myriad of backgrounds in addition to fitness, including careers as a lawyer and as an Olympic caliber athlete in the sport of womenâs ice hockey.
The move will bolster the clubâs already booming fitness department, which includes a ProFitness Program, personal training, TRX, pilates, swimming, basketball, nutrition and wellness, and over 75 group fitness classesâfrom strength to cardio, indoor cycling, Zumba, mind body, aquatics and Les Mills Body Pump and Body Combat.
âNan brings a tremendous amount of energy, expertise and creativity to our members and, importantly, to our local community,â said Keith Callahan, General Manager and Managing Partner. âWith Nanâs leadership, weâre excited to launch new programs for our members and have already developed a unique program called Commit to Get Fit that will be provided for club members as well as open to the community this fall.”
âI have always believed that great success comes from sharing a common goal and working together to make it happen,â added Gorton. âI am excited to get to work getting the best out of everyone I work with both as a coach and a manager.â

Top Junior Players in the Northeast Hit MAC Tennis Courts for Training Camp
This weekend, Manchester Athletic Club welcomed 24 of the most elite junior tennis players across the northeast region of the nation to come together for a two-day, high-intensity camp that focused on player training, character on and off the court, and the roles of players, parents and coaches. This weekendâs camp is one of several of this caliber held at Manchester Athletic Club since the club was named a Regional Training Center by the United States Tennis Association (USTA).
Players born between 2000 and 2002 who display the greatest potential in their age groups were hand-selected by USTA regional player development directors and national coaches to train together for this prestigious two-day session. Many players already have national rankings, with seven of Manchester Athletic Clubâs MAC Tennis Academy players in the mix, including: Chris Li of Westford, Sydney Weinberg, Nilos Makino and Julia Thompson of Winchester, Lexi Kubas of Ellington, CT, Grace Campanella of Wells, ME, and Alex Finklestein of Raynham, MA, who took home the USTA Courage Award.
Leading the USTA RTC Camp this weekend were nine USTA Regional Training Center Pros from across New England, as well as the Eastern and Middle States section, including USTA National coach Jay Devashetty of New York and MAC Academy coaches Francisco Montoya, Ricardo Munar and Todd Carpenter.
âBeing the only USTA Regional Training Center in New England has brought our program many advantages.â said Todd Carpenter, Director of Tennis at Manchester Athletic Club. âBeing able to offer our players the opportunity to play against their peers at the highest level in the country right here at their home training base is certainly one of those advantages.â
MAC players and members of the surrounding community will have another opportunity to watch tennis at its top level when Manchester Athletic Club becomes home to the Boston Lobsters, New Englandâs professional tennis team, this summer.
Manchester Athletic Club is located in Manchester by-the-Sea, MA, and is one of only 17 USTA regional training centers in the country. The full service health club features 11 tennis courts, the Gymazing! Child Center for preschool-aged children, iXl programs for young teens, a fitness and strength training center staffed with certified professional trainers, indoor aquatics center, multiple group exercise studios, and an outdoor pool with playground. What’s New At The MAC? New Youth Basketball Program!
We are AST American Sports Training Academy on the North Shore, and weâd like to introduce
you to our new co-ed basketball skills & drills clinic program, AST Hoop-FUNdamentals for
boys and girls age 7-17.
We are launching our program mid-March at The Manchester Athletic Club (MAC) in
Manchester, MA (just off Exit 15, Rte.128N.)
Why should local Cape Ann players and their parents be interested in investing in skills & drills
classes this off-season, with spring sports just starting up?
We believe it makes perfect sense for kids who love the game, to keep in basketball shape and
continue to improve their all-important fundamental skills so they can develop to a higher
level…in preparation for next season.
We also believe younger kids, new to the sport of basketball, should learn the right way,
the first time and as for more advanced players, they only get better practicing the fundamentals.
A focused, fun, instructional program…our program…for one class per week will make the
measurable difference.
Our team at AST American Sports Training is staffed by experienced, energetic professional school teacher/coaches
and you can learn more “About Us” on our website www.asthoops.com.
Also, of note, is the discounted price we give to each member of an established team if 2 or
more team members enroll and multiple siblings get an even deeper family discount rate.
p.s. We are proud our clinicians are exceptional people with experience teaching school and
coaching children and adolescents.
I have attached a PDF that nets out our Spring clinic and we will be very grateful if you can include it on GMG.
Any additional information you may need, please let me know.
Thanks, and I am signing us up for GMG. It is excellent….

Pedal To End Cancer March 3, 2013 At The MAC
On March 3, 2013, we will be joining over 85 clubs across New England hosting the American Cancer Societyâs 9th annual Pedal to End Cancer event. In the last eight years, Pedal to End Cancer has raised over $2.2 million to benefit the American Cancer Society’s programs of cancer research, education, advocacy and patient services.
I hope that you will support our effort with a donation â making a financial contribution, or an in-kind donation of a product or service that we can either use in our raffle, award to one of our top fundraisers, or simply distribute to all of our participants.
Approximately 60 people are registered to participate at our club location. Every participant has his/her own reason for joining us as we pedal towards a world with more birthdays. Some have watched a love one battle the disease, while others have struggled with it themselves. Whatever their reason for participating, each is working to raise funds for a world with less cancer and more birthdays.
We want to show our support to those who work tirelessly to raise the funds that are vital to a mission that is important to all of us. The American Cancer Society is fighting to save more birthdays but they canât do it alone. I do hope you’ll consider sponsoring our event and helping us in the fight against cancer!
Sincerely,
Lindsay Mzaouakk

Multi-tasking(working more than one body part at a time)
Why workout?:
To feel good, look good, and stay healthy
Favorite exercise:
I can’t pick just one, I love lower body exercises, and planks, planks, and more planks!
Favorite easy to cook recipe:
GREEK CHICKEN SOUP
1 (3 pound)whole chicken
1/2 cup uncooked rice (I use brown)
salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
⢠3egg, beaten
⢠2lemons, juiced
1. Rinse the chicken and remove any organs that may be inside. Place in a pot large enough for the chicken to move around, but not too much room or the broth will be watery. Add the chicken neck if that is included with your chicken. Fill with enough water to cover by about 1 inch. Cover and bring to a boil. When boiling, reduce heat to low and simmer for 45 minutes to 1 hour, skimming the fat from the top as it collects.
2. When the chicken is done, the meat should pull from the bones easily. Transfer the bird to a large bowl and set aside to cool. Add the rice, and season the broth with salt and pepper. Simmer over low heat for 20 more minutes, or until rice is tender.
3. Whisk the eggs with the lemon juice in a bowl. When the rice is done, turn off the heat. Whisk one ladle full of hot broth into the eggs slowly so the eggs do not curdle. Gradually whisk in more broth until the egg mixture is heated. Then pour the egg mixture back into the pot, whisking briskly. The result should be a creamy, cloudy looking soup. You may season with additional salt, pepper or lemon juice at this point.
4. You may add pieces of chicken to the soup before serving or serve soup with salted chicken on the side.
⢠PREP 15 mins
⢠COOK 1 hr
⢠READY IN 1 hr15 mins
Footnotes
⢠The soup should be filling, salty and slightly sour, so I use 2 juicy lemons although the flavor may be too sour for non-Greeks. Grocery store lemons tend to not be as juicy as organic lemons or lemons from a Hispanic/Mexican grocery store.

Yeah I’m Kickin Your Butt Muffy
So The Challenge Has Been Accepted- It’s Muffy White vs Your Boy Joey In A MyZone Fitness Challenge Death Match
Iâm up at the Manchester Athletic Club and they have these fitness bands that you strap around your chest and it measures your level of physical activity and then sends a report while you are working out to a computer system which generates a report.

The idea intrigued me because I know I try to push myself at the gym but you donât really know how much your activity is stacking up.
So I signed up to get the MyZone Band and tried it out. First you enter your height, weight and age and it calculates your average energy expended based on that criteria. As soon as your workout is done you unhook the strap and you get an email with your physical activity report.
Now when all that gets explained to you youâre think wow, that sounds pretty cool. But this is what happens in actuality-
There is a monitor inside the Manchester Athletic club and once your MyZone Band is on your name pops up and your level of activity is recorded. The only thing that is displayed on the public monitor is your current level of activity, how many calories youâve burned since your workout started and how many MyZone Points you’ve racked up. So once you go throug a workout and you get your results you see where you might have backed off and it makes you want to push through harder all the way through your workout, knowing that youâre totally accountable when you see your results.
You can say itâs a gimmick, you can say that you shouldnât need a fitness monitor band to motivate you but you know what? Knowing I had that damn band on and that it was gonna spit out my results in my email box made me push harder than ever. Gimmick- shmmimick itâs effective and at the end of the day thatâs all that matters.
So now to top it all off on the cool factor you can issue challenges to anyone else that has the band. You just send them an email challenge and select a date range and whoever puts in more effort wins the challenge. You can make bets around that, you can use it to motivate you even more. Believe me when you have friends like Muffy White who you know is just gonna rub your nose in it if you lose- you will be motivated!
So Itâs ON!
Muffy issued a challenge to me through the MyZone website that went like this-
Muffy has invited you to a MYZONE Points challenge
from 16 January 2013 to 1 February 2013.
"Bring your A game wharf boy. "
Please log in and accept or reject challenge
Here are screenshots after my activity on January 23rd and Muffy yesterday-
and hereâs Muffyâs-
So after one day Muffy is kicking my ass. Her workout was 1:02 minutes, mine 45. It should be said that Muffy is a gym rat and you all know me as the slug who works down the dock so if she doesnât kick my ass there should be an investigation. But that doesnât mean Iâm not gonna give it hell tryin.
Day 1 Muffy 177- Joey C 147.
Oh I forgot to tell you, you can also work out away from the gym I think as long as you activate your fitness band and then once you get to the gym it will upload the data. Somebody correct me if Iâm wrong.
Alright Muffy, letâs do this!
