Fish On Fridays

The Fish on Fridays series is a collaboration between Gloucester photographers Kathy Chapman and Marty Luster. Look for various aspects of Gloucester’s centuries-old fishing industry highlighted here on Fridays.

An impromptu visit to F/V Lady Jane caught Captain Russ Sherman and crew in the process of cleaning out some old gear and fueling up for their next run.  After a short jaunt from its berth at the Jodrey State Fish Pier in Gloucester to the fuel dock, Lady Jane took on approximately 3,600 gallons of fuel at $3.39 per gallon, or about $12,000!!

While photographing the wheelhouse, Kathy asked Russ about the dangers of high seas. Russ recounted a time (20+ years ago) he and five crew members were washed from a fishing vessel and he spent 19 hours in frigid waters until the Coast Guard rescued him. Only three survived.

Early Morning Fishing On Gloucester’s Lady Jane Video From Frank Bealieau Part II

The Net Is Set and Frank Takes Us On A Tour Of The Deck

Early Morning Fishing On Gloucester’s Lady Jane Video From Frank Bealieau

The Sunrise Amazing.   The crew works to clean fish as they have every day out fishing while mother nature puts on a spectacular show all around them.  There’s no audio but plenty to see.

We have two more videos from Frank which I’ll be posting over the next two days.

Stevie Aboard The Lady Jane Mends The Net

Stevie is a guy that’s worked his whole life as a fisherman.  One of the old timers. I wonder when the Sectors get put into place if there will be a place for career crew members aboard fishing boats like Stevie or if it will be a series of hired hands just punching in for a pay check.   Not really caring about really learning the trade, waiting for their paycheck from some large corporation which bought up the permits.
It doesn’t look good for the independent fisherman.

Stevie Aboard The Lady Jane

Stevie has been fishing his whole life. He used to fish with Carlo Mocri aboard the Morning Star and now fishes with Russell Sherman on the Lady Jane.

Mikey and Ringo Prepare To Toss The Lines

Here’s Mikey and Ringo preparing to toss the lines to the dock and tie her up. There has been an influx of dogfish where they fish which makes a mess of the nets and creates a ton of work picking through them to get to the whiting.

The problem with the dogfish is that there is a 600lb per boat per day quota and if you load up a bag with 5000lbs that you have to throw back overboard, it just isn’t a whole lot of fun.

Many lobstermen believe that this quota on dogfish is hurting the lobster industry along with the large size limit on striper bass as these predators devour baby lobsters.

Stevie Mending The Net Aboard The Lady Jane

Here is Stevie mending the net after “making damage”.  “Making damage” is a term used when the net goes over some hard bottom on the oceans floor and it tears the net.

I wonder when the last of these old timers are gone if we will lose those terms.  Ringo, Stevie and Russell are all over 60 years old.

Mikey was all upset this afternoon that he wasn’t on the blog today.  Here you go Mikey Boy!
