MUSICAL SYNERGY OF MIDDLE EAST AND WESTERN JAZZ AT MEETINGHOUSE GREEN
July 19 free concert of Middle Eastern Jazz
The entrancing music of the Middle East is integrated with Western Jazz standards by the American-born band, Hye Fusion, at the third free concert on Meetinghouse Green, on Friday, July 19, 6:00 PM – 8:30 PM.
Enjoy the dynamic synergy of melodies and rhythms of this unique band, who play both current and traditional instruments. Hye Fusion’s love for integrating Middle Eastern music with jazz comes from their family lineages, from musical training at the New England Conservatory as well as from musical mentors such as Oscar Peterson and Bill Evans. Mal Barsamian is renowned for his oud playing, classical and rhythm guitars as well as clarinet and saxophone. Harry Bedrossian is also a highly accomplished oudist as well as a classical concert pianist, with expertise in Middle Eastern modal tonality. And Charles Dermenjian plays percussion, featuring the doumbek, the most commonly played percussive instrument of the Middle East. The band successfully blends ethnic Middle Eastern rhythms with standard and creative Western Jazz music, making an unforgettable evening of musical enjoyment.
Each week Music on Meetinghouse Green partners with a different non-profit organization to raise awareness for the services they provide to the local community. At the July 19 concert, the audience is invited to contribute to a freewill donation for the Open Door, a non-profit whose mission is to alleviate the impact of hunger in our community. Markouk will provide delectable Middle Eastern food for concert-goers.
The Gloucester Meetinghouse, home of the Unitarian Universalist Church, is located at the corner of Church and Middle Streets. The concert is handicapped accessible. Event parking is available on the green and at additional parking lots nearby in the Historic District. Folding chairs will be provided or bring your own beach chair. In the event of inclement weather, the concert will be held inside the Meetinghouse.

Mother’s Day Concert at Gloucester Meetinghouse
Tomorrow, Sunday, May 14th is Mother’s Day and at 3:30pm the Gloucester Meetinghouse Foundation will present the last in its 2016-17 Concert & Lecture Series featuring the Ipswich-based ensemble ‘The Orchestra on the Hill’ under the direction of Tom Palance. The featured work is Aaron Copland’s colorful and evocative suite “Appalachian Spring” plus RalphVaughan Williams’ “Suite For Viola and Orchestra” with viola soloist Karen McConomy and “The Banquet,” a two movement piece by Chris Florio, Ipswich resident and award winning composer and performer. This wonderful program is the first performance by ‘The Orchestra on the Hill’ in Gloucester, whose home venue is the music room of the the Crane Estate in Ipswich. A reception will follow in which you may greet the musicians, some of the finest players on the North Shore.
This is a great opportunity to take your mother, or perhaps an extra-special woman in your life, to lunch someplace on Cape Ann and follow it with a truly memorable musical experience. The historic 1806 Gloucester Meetinghouse has been described as “a concert hall appearing to be a church,” blessed with extraordinarily fine acoustics that will allow Tom Palance and the orchestra to demonstrate the expansive tonal and dynamic beauty of these works.
The Meetinghouse, home to the Gloucester Unitarian Universalist Church, is located on the green at the corner of Church and Middle Street where you may park. TITLE: ‘LEVEN & SORELLANZA VALENTINES’ CONCERT
WHAT TO EXPECT:
‘Leven and Sorellanza performed in concert together for the first time at the Gloucester Meetinghouse in February 2015 and return this year with the Valentine’s Day theme. They began their debut by flying a long banner over the audience as they produced ethereal sounds that set a magical tone to the whole evening. The varied repertoire of these talented women and their evident exuberance for singing a cappella was hugely entertaining as well as moving for the audience with playful solos, duets and rhythmic gymnastics adding spice to their superbly blended ensembles. Prepare to relax, laugh, remember, and allow the theme of love to permeate your soul with music sung from the heart.
WHAT’S SPECIAL? Two Cape Ann a cappella womens’ vocal ensembles raise their voices in songs of Love…and Home…and Love…and Work…and Love…and Life…and Love…and Strength…and Love…and Peace…and Love some more…

PERFORMERS:
‘Leven is an enduring ensemble of Cape Ann womens’ voices founded in 1991 in
the eleventh month, at 1111 Washington St., under the leavening influence of Dawn Pratson
and ten similarly enlightened ladies.
Various combinations of ‘Leven singers have continued to bring powerful, poignant and eclectic a cappella repertoire to Cape Ann audiences for the past 26 years. In this Valentine season they sing songs for the love of “home” – whether keeping the home fires burning, departing for far off places, or returning back home again.

Sorellanza is a womens’ a cappella group based on Cape Ann and directed by Rockport resident, Patti Pike. Founded in 2006, Sorellanza draws enthusiastic audiences with varied and upbeat repertoire. For this concert many songs are a blend of old and new: ancient lyrics set to modern music, a blend of Rumi text with Psalms, and homage to our grandmothers.
Their eclectic repertoire includes a love song from West Side Story, a Lullaby from Billy Joel, an honoring of the One, and some just plain fun songs. Songs from the Heart is a unifying theme that includes them all.
