“The charms of Gloucester exploded on the big screen at the local unveiling of the film “CODA,” a four-time winner at this year’s Sundance Film Festival.

The special event Thursday evening, intended for those who worked or assisted in some way with the film, turned out to be “the” premiere  after  director Sian Heder learned that the West Coast screening was canceled.

“Our premiere in L.A. isn’t happening so you are at the premiere,” she told the attendees at the Gloucester Cinema on Essex Avenue. “But I’m so excited to be here and share this with you. This is the first time I am seeing it with an audience. This film is a love letter to Gloucester…”

Film Cape Ann

Filmed in Gloucester in late summer and fall in 2019 before Covid, the movie benefited from the local Film Tax Credit (as will the upcoming movie, Confess, Fletch, starring John Slattery and Jon Hamm). Locations in town for CODA feature Pratty’s and the bandstand in Rockport. Many local hires involved, including Elana Lee, ASL interpreter.

DON’T MISS THIS FILM: THE FINEST HOURS!!!

My husband Tom and I went to see The Finest Hours last night. It was superb, and very suspenseful–I wasn’t just at the edge of my seat, I was hiding under my coat! My friend Donna Casey was one of the costume designers and the costumes were fantastic; the female lead’s 1950’s dresses and coats were especially exquisite. It was wonderful to see Donna’s name in the credits!

The Finest Hours is the story of what is considered the Coast Guards greatest small boat rescue and when you see the film, you will understand why.

This Disney feature film was primarily shot in Massachusetts. Thanks to our amazing and super hard working House Representative Ann Margaret Ferrante for the film tax credit, which keeps Massachusetts crew and production teams, and myriad ancillary businesses, working at well paying jobs!

LIVE FROM GERMAN TV BASE CAMP FOR KATIE FFORDE FILM

Set electrician Alec Roy, from Watertown, reports from Russell Orchards (the current Katie Fforde base camp) that filming will continue on the Northshore at least through Thanksgiving. We talked a bit about the film tax credit and he made a point of thanking everyone who supported, and is continuing to support, the film tax credit. Sending a huge shout out to our Representative Ann Margaret Ferrante for all her tremendous work in preserving the credit and undoubtedly saving thousands of well paying jobs!!!
