HarvestFest is TODAY!!!: Cooking Demos, Live Music, Local Food & Contra Dancing!!!
Don’t miss Rockport’s HarvestFest THIS Saturday, October 19th from 10am to 6pm. The fun includes dancing and a bit of Ipswich Ale, among other delights. This post would be a million words long (really!) if I included everything going on, so for the details check out the website: www.rockportartfestivals.com/harvestfest/schedule-of-events In the meantime, here are just a few highlights:
- Rockport Music is sponsoring a Make Your Own Instrument Workshop for children at 10am (first come, first served)
- Cape Ann Animal Aid is sponsoring a Dog Parade at 11:30, with lots of fun prizes to be awarded!
- Bearskin Neck Leathers is sponsoring the Buddy Walker Band, a polka band founded 65 years ago with performances at 1pm, 2pm and 3pm in front of the shop.
- The MIT Juggling Club is joining the fun with performances throughout the afternoon.
- The HarvestFest Contra Dance, sponsored by the Cape Ann Contra Dance group, will host an outdoor dance in Dock Square, complete with live musicians and a caller. Did you ever think there would be dancing in the streets in Rockport?
The Annual Scarecrow Chase Costume Parade for children begins at 3pm. Lots o’ fun & a treat for children are in store.- Don’t forget the all-day food & drink under the big tent on T Wharf. Ipswich Ale, Twin Lights and an awesome roster of vendors will be on hand.
- Cooking demos will take place throughout the day, culminating in the famous Seafood Throwdown at 2:30, sponsored by the Northwest Atlantic Marine Alliance.

- Finally, close out the festival by sending off the public art installation that has been on Lumber Wharf all summer (due to be disassembled the day after HarvestFest). Head over to Lumber Wharf at 6:15 to join us to say farewell to this very cool piece of public art.

Enjoying vacation in New York State
I’m sorry to have missed the Gloucester Street Bazaar, but I’m off having a grand old time with family in New York State. This is part 1 of a 2-part vacation, so I won’t be back with new Gloucester photos for a few days. In the meantime, here is a taste of a Hutchings’ (my mother’s side of the family) get-together!
Beautiful landscapes:

Going over vintage family photos:

And of course I’m doing origami, but I already posted some of those photos… and more will be showing up soon!

15+ Things to do on a RAINY DAY & a classic video
Visiting Gloucester? Have friends in from out of town? You’re probably complaining to yourself that the weather isn’t cooperating, right? Not to worry! There’s lots to do in Gloucester and Cape Ann when the weather is lousy. Just be glad you’re not on Cape Cod, where there really isn’t much to do except go to the beach.
Just to see what he’d say I asked a friend, who grew up in Gloucester and now lives in NYC (owns a bar and writes for a New York Time Blog) why would New Yorkers come here instead of Cape Cod. Here’s the mini rant he wrote back:
Gloucester is a place for culture now, just like it was in the 1800s and 1900s. Contemporary culture is actually at its best here, maybe more so than any Mass city other than Boston and Cambridge. Where else can you buy fresh caught fish, see a great play, hear Henri Smith play a bar or watch the Met opera in 3D, attend a reading by a national author, eat lobster in the rough or a 3-star style meal, hike, jump quarries, dive off rocks into the ocean (there are no rocks on Cape Cod), mountain bike, drink a $2 beer in barroom full of fisherman, see the most beautiful boats in the world, go to a world class museum, etc etc.
You nailed it Ray! Below the video, we’ve listed another 15 things you can do on a rainy day. Just be glad you don’t live in England, where you wouldn’t expect the sun. As John Lennon put it in the Beatles classic, “I Am the Walrus”:
Sitting in an English garden waiting for the sun.
If the sun don’t come, you get a tan
From standing in the English rain.

Fun free stuff: Gloucester Lyceum & Sawyer Free Library this month
Hi Joey,
Get over to the library! This month, the Matz Gallery at the Gloucester Lyceum & Sawyer Free library is featuring the creative proposals of 15 semi finalists artist/artist teams for the HarborWalk Public Art Challenge.
Gloucester Engineering and the Matz family created a lovely exhibition space and lobby!
Bring your kids and grandchildren. There are games and small prizes and discoveries for all ages. Here’s a printable sample “hidden pictures”.
Leave some extra time to admire more art at the library, the neighborhood quilts, the always excellent Children’s Library and programming, and the fountain. Remember to peer past the construction screen to see what’s coming! The exhibit is open when the library is open. Come for the 8:30AM opening time of the main library, and then head down to the Children’s room, which opens at 10AM. Tuesdays and Thursdays the library is open until 8pm.
Adults are welcome, too. Here are some of our city planners visiting with Utile while they’re working together on the downtown work plan.

My Baby is no longer a baby
Posted on February 15, 2008 by Joey C
My Baby is no longer a baby, originally uploaded by captjoe06.
OK I’m really really having a tough time with this.
Since the Bean was a couple months old she slept and put herself to sleep with her two binkies. One orange, and one pink.
The Mrs and I have been lamenting the day that we would have to take the binkies away because we figured that Ellie would never get to sleep without them, and the horror show it would be trying to get her to sleep.
Out of the blue last night she tells her mom that she wants to give her binkies to the fishies and lobsters down at daddy’s wharf.
So she came down and tossed them to the fishies without even batting an eyelash. What was supposed to be this trying time of transition into being a little girl from a baby happened in the blink of an eye.
And I’m pretty sad about it.
It’s the last thing of her being a baby, and there’s no turning back.
Whoa.

Snoop Maddie Mad Is 250th Percentile For Loving Soccer
Running joke in our house is that our kids are 250th percentile at this or that. A joke making fun of obnoxious parents that claim their kids are this percentile or that percentile at some skill set. You’re only supposed to be able to go up to 100% but I like to say back to those folks when they say their kid is 85th percentile at something that my kid is 250th percentile and stare back at the quizzical looks on their faces.
Snoop Mad is 250th percentile at loving soccer. And that’s a higher percentile than your kid. Deal with it.
The whole paying attention during practice part maybe negative 250th percentile. Like when she was tending the net as the goalie and giving me the thumbs up on the sidelines when another six year old drilled a shot right past her for a goal. Oopsies.
and would you look at those rags we’ve got her in? She looks like a homeless soccer kid. Her parents get a negative 300th percentile for rolling their kid out in that get-up. Need to go to the sporting goods store stat and pick up some umbro soccer shorts.
