Key to Gloucester City Hall’s City Council in Session 1937 New Deal mural by Charles Allan Winter

The Committee for the Arts is excited to share new “in situ” photographs of Gloucester ’s City Hall murals by noted architectural photographer, Chuck Choi.

Here’s one featuring Charles Allan Winter’s City Council in Session in the lobby of City Hall (don’t miss our killer ship chandeliers!);

followed by a photo zoomed in to show all 34 figures

followed by a photo of the framed “key” that his installed below the mural, just above the collectors’ windows—more to follow on the key!

There was media coverage in the 1930s for the murals as they were completed, and many times since then. Here’s a fun one: In 1972 Senator William L. Saltonstall (Manchester resident and member of the Massachusetts Senate from 1967-1979) enlisted the help of media to announce a contest to help identify the portraits in some of Charles Allan Winter’s New Deal murals within Gloucester ’s City Hall. The Cape Ann VF insert published a photograph of the Winter mural in Kyrouz Auditorium, The Founding of Gloucester, with the caption: “Senator Saltonstall is offering dinner for two at a Gloucester restaurant to the first person to identify the most real people in the mural painting above.”

City Hall Mural ID Help

Hey Joey,
Tim Moran here.  I am the one who posted all of the pictures of the “Magnolia Kids” reunion last September.

Regarding the restored murals in the City Hall, specifically the one where there is a group of men gathered around a conference table in a meeting.
My sisters, Marcia, Sunny, and I are wondering if the man with the gavel at the head of the table might be ouir grandfather Wilfred H Ringer.  Wilfred H Ringer was the principal of Gloucester High through much of the 30s.
Here are a crop from the mural and a picture of our grandfather.

Repairs to City Hall’s Weathervane

Maggie Rosa writes-

Weather permitting a crane will be brought to City Hall at 7:00am on Friday November 9th. The crane will be placed in the Administration side of the City Hall parking lot. Campbell Construction, contractors for the ongoing exterior restoration project, are donating their services to remove the weathervane, repair it and place it back on the tower. Rental costs for the crane are being donated by C.E. Cyr Construction Co., Inc. (Lawrence, MA) and Craig Herrmann Design (Gloucester, MA). Both companies are working on the Gorton’s addition project and are happy to contribute to the community.

If mother nature is not cooperative the repairs will be rescheduled most likely for Friday, November 16th.

The weathervane was donated to the City in 1989 by the Cape Ann Savings Bank and is modeled on the famed schooner “Elsie”.

Many thanks to all of these public spirited firms. We appreciate your generosity.

joey – here’s the schooner with a broken mast on top of city hall.  the copper model was created by washburn on rt. 114 in 1989 and donated to the city by the cape ann savings bank.  this pic was taken just before she was hoisted up to her place of honor.  it is, of course, the elsie, built in 1910 by a.d. story in essex.  gordon thomas, in fast and able, called her "one of the greatest."  if anyone can help bring her down for repairs, step forward!  a model of the elsie by cape ann master craftsman erik ronnberg is on display at the cape ann museum.  it’s a beautiful thing…

“In A Bird’s Eye”

Most if not all Gloucester residents are well acquainted with the heated local debate about the future of The Fort and the old Bird’s Eye building.  This was the inspiration for the musical “In A Bird’s Eye”, which was given a reading/singing at the Tragabigzanda Political Theatre Festival.  It follows a family through their discussions at their annual 4th of July reunion, where tradition and change collide in a funny and balanced portrayal of people on of both sides of the debate (and those who chose to stay in between).

New lighting in Gloucester City Hall Photo From Maggie Rosa

Work in progress!

National Grid has worked with the City to provide new lighting for City Hall’s Kyrouz Auditorium – the lighting fixtures are on the left, the old on the right.

In addition, the lighting for the Build Not For Today Alone but for Tomorrow As Well WPA mural has been replaced.

Staging on the ventilators will be coming down this week or next. Get your cameras ready!

“Unexpected”

The second play in the “Tragabigzanda Political Theatre Festival” was “Unexpected”, in which we see a family dealing with the drug overdose-induced death of one of its own. The part that struck me most was the imagined conversation between the deceased and his niece.

“You Are My Sunshine”

Photos from the first of three short plays at the Tragabizanda Political Theatre Festival, which was held at City Hall over the past two weekends.  “You Are My Sunshine” is a moving drama that deals with the issue of post-partum depression.

Henry Allen, the director, gave an intro to the festival and to the three plays.
