The ice travels down that troth and into the funnel looking thing where it gets blasted out by the huge motors and delivered through large hoses to either boats or trucks. The same way today that it was done 25 years ago. Some times when things work you stick with it.

Here is Scott Memhard, owner of Cape Pond Ice. The picture is taken from the tower where ice is distributed to either oceanside to the boats or truck dockside to truck trade.

In 1989 Cape Pond Ice and The Railways sold 23,000 tons of ice to the fishing industry.
In 1998 Cape Pond Ice and the Railways sold 12,000 tons of ice to the fishing industry
In 2008 Cape Pond Ice and The Railways sold 5500 tons of ice to the fishing industry.
People say that Cape Pond Ice is a vital part of the hub services for the fishing industry but Scott says that for him to continue he will need alternative supporting uses to continue to serve that very same industry. He says he needs financially viable supporting uses outside of the fishing industry to keep it all going.
He would need to be able to diversify to keep things going but the people that want him to keep going are the same ones that may put him out of business by not allowing him to diversify.
How ironic is that?
When taking some Christmas window display pictures downtown this morning I noticed the Ice sculpture in front of Art Haven is no longer there. If you didn’t get to see it, here it is-

This industrial elevator is capable of lifting palletloads of ice up and down. That saves a whole lot of manual labor.

Old School Baby! Our Winch Heads are horizontal. This one at Cape Pond Ice Stands Vertical. Ours are also driven by electic motors. This one is belt driven.
These things are heavy heavy duty. I can’t even imagine what type of trauma it took to take that notch of steel out of the top edge. It had to be something massive coming down on it. I mean really, really massive.
