Second Glance Statue post

Yesterday Charlene M Delany a Facebook friend posted the photo and caption above. After liking her post, I couldn’t stop thinking about the photo of the religious statues. This morning after meeting friends for coffee, I decided to stop by The Open Doors Thrift Store, Second Glance to see if the St. Joseph and St. Anthony statues were still on display, and find out if they were indeed for sale. After a quick scan of the glass and collectable area of the store, I was directed to their back room, where I immediately spotted them on a display shelf, exactly as shown in the photo on Facebook yesterday morning. As I approached the shelf I was thrilled to see they both were labeled with very reasonably priced sale tags! As I carefully lifted the heavy statues from the display, my heart was fluttering with joy, as I carried them to the cash register to purchase them!

Professional and amateur ARTISTS compete to see who can make a pumpkin LOOK BEST.  Alchemy will donate $5 to the Open Door for every pumpkin entered.

Contestants do not need to be present at the event itself to win, they simply need to bring their carved pumpkin to Alchemy anytime between now and 7:00 pm on October 29th. The best looking pumpkin will earn its maker a $100 gift certificate with second place receiving $50.

Here are some ideas – but maybe someone should do a GMG pumpkin?

If you want to attend the Chef Pumpkin Challenge at Alchemy on Tuesday, October 29th  call 978-281-3997.  Alchemy’s Chef Scott Jensen will challenge Chef Stacy Cogswell of Regal Beagle to a throw down with the season’s #1 staple: the pumpkin.

At the challenge, every guest will receive a signature challenge cocktail made with Gloucester’s own Ryan & Wood spirits, a pumpkin dish from each chef, and the opportunity to cast their vote for the winner of both contests.

Striped bass tournament to benefit Open Door food pantry in Gloucester

Tournament, now its eighth year, has raised $30,000 to fight North Shore hunger

Tickets are now on sale at Winchester Fishing for a striped bass fishing tournament to benefit the Open Door food pantry in Gloucester.

The Leo Almeida Memorial North Shore Striped Bass Tournament is celebrating its eighth year this Labor Day weekend. It is the only tournament that combines the North Shore’s fishing heritage with the fight against hunger on Cape Ann and in other local communities.

The tournament will be held this Labor Day weekend, Sept. 4-6. Prizes up to $500 will be awarded in various categories, including boat, shore/surf and for youth 15 and under.  A raffle of dozens of prizes will also be held. Those who wish to donate to the pantries without fishing can enter and will also be eligible to win raffle prizes.

Entry fee is $15. Tickets are available at Winchester Fishing in Gloucester. Ticket sales end this Friday, Sept. 3.

The Open Door on Emerson Avenue has been feeding local residents for over 25 years. The tournament will also benefit the People to People Food Pantry in Danvers and Our Neighbor’s Table in Amesbury.

Leo Almeida was a lifelong North Shore resident whose commitment to public service was matched by his love of fishing. He died in 2003, shortly before the first North Shore Striped Bass Tournament that he organized. In the past seven years, the tournament has raised over $30,000 for food pantries in Gloucester, Danvers and Amesbury. More than 800 people have participated since the tournament began.

To enter or for more information, see www.northshorestriper.com  or call Tournament Chairwoman Amy Almeida at (617) 501-1659.
