Peaceful and Protected ~ Brace Cove Makes for the Perfect Seal Hang Out!
I’ve never seen so many conglomerating all at once at Brace Cove; at one point I counted over twenty lounging on the rocks and swimming in the water. The seals are fun and interesting to observe as they often play a game that seems very much like the children’s game King of the Mountain. Click to view larger.
Sunbathing ~ Seal Style!
Reflections at Brace Cove and Niles Pond
Our plane was delayed 7 hours en route to Cincinnati for Christmas. Fortunately, we were able to stay in contact with the airline from home. My daughter Liv and I went for a walk along the berm dividing Brace Cove and Niles Pond while waiting to leave. As we were looking at the sun setting over Niles Pond, we by chance turned towards Brace Cove and were captivated by the vibrant colors reflected in the windows of the home on the point. Magically a Harbor Seal swam onto the scene and scootched up on the rock and he too, caught the last of the sun’s fleeting light!
Spiral Jetty
One of my favorite artists is Robert Smithson (1938-1973), and I especially love his seminal earthwork Spiral Jetty, located in Salt Lake City, Utah, and created in 1970. The Brace Cove Sculptor created a mini-spiral jetty at the high tide line the other day, and it was fun to be reminded again of Smithson’s Spiral Jetty.
Spiral Jetty is an earthwork sculpture made from rock and earth and is located on the northern end of the Great Salt Lake. Three new guardians are working to protect and promote the Spiral Jetty, and they are Dia Art Foundation, based out of New York City, the Great Salt Lake Institute, and the Utah Museum of Fine Art.
