FEATURED IN NORTHSHORE MAG’S FEBRUARY “LOVE” ISSUE,
GORDON ALEXANDER, WINE MERCHANT & OWNER, TERRIOR WINES, RETURNS FOR A SPECIAL COMPLIMENTARY FINE WINE TASTING @ SAVOUR, POURING SIX SPECIAL, SEASONAL SELECTIONS – THREE FROM VIRGINA, ONES THAT “LOVE” REGIONAL FOOD PAIRINGS. JOIN US TO LEARN MORE…

WHAT & WHY: Join us this Saturday, January 22nd for a  complimentary wine tasting with Gordon Alexander wine merchant / owner of Terroir Wines.  Gordon will be pouring an eclectic selection of 6 wines, each with a story of their singular terrior representing: Burgundy, Fr., Republic of Georgia and Virginia, USA…6 bottles that may be new to your palette.  As always, the tasting is elevated using our imported Riedel stemware.

A notable learning experience…. Gordon Alexander, Terrior Wines works directly with winemakers here and abroad, innovators that cherish their land, producing wines expressing the sense of place with minimal intervention in the vineyard and cellar. Most are organic, some biodynamic, all sustainable.  Wines that are as unique and individual as their makers.

WHO: wine merchant, Gordon Alexander together with Savor’s Kathleen Morgan have selected wines dedicated to the principle that care of place matters.

WHEN: This Saturday, January 22nd, from 2pm to 4pm + at Savour

HOW: Saturday tastings are complimentary, as is parking behind the store with rear entrance.

Saturday’s Pourings include:

THE MICHAEL SHAPS COLLECTION  –  France & Virginia, USA
-Michael Shaps, Petit Manseng, Charlottesville , VA, USA, 2018, Alc. 13%, Varietal: Petit Manseng, Tasting: This wine is our heaviest white and is structured like a Chardonnay.  It transmits an exotic flavor, hinting of grilled pineapple and mango.  It is very aromatic, with a bright, tropical and pleasant acid on the finish that balances out the up front weight. Pairs well: with shellfish and chicken dishes…. $29.99

Michael Shaps, Bourgogne Aligote, “Bouzeron Les Clous” AOC, Burgundy Fr. 2020, Alc. 13%, Varietal: Aligote, Tasting: This Aligoté comes from two vineyard sites—one in Savigny-les-Beaune and the other in Bouzeron.   The bright fruit notes express citrus and honeysuckle, while the palate has the crisp varietal acidity and good balance and length that is attributed to the pre-fermentation maceration. Pairs well: cured meats, pasta with clams, rich fish (salmon, tuna), shellfish, mild and soft cheeses….$24.99

-Michael Shaps “ Wild Meadow Vineyard Chardonnay”, Shenandoah, VA
., Alc. 13.5%  Varietal: Chardonnay Tasting: This is a fantastic wine. Complex for a white with pear and honeysuckle notes, and a run of flavors from beginning to aftertaste. Pale lemon in color with a developing medium plus intensity nose. Green apple, lemon, pear, vanilla, spice, coconut. Dry, medium bodied, medium alcohol plus intensity on the body. Buttered popcorn, vanilla, pear, lemon, toast. Truly a unique wine. Drink now but suitable for aging. Pairs well: mushroom risotto, lobster, shrimp and halibut… $27.99

Michael Shaps Petit Verdot, Monticello, VA, USA, Alc. 13.5%, Varietal: Petit Verdot, Tasting: Bold, structured…whiffs of smoke and dark-roast coffee meander pleasantly amid bright red-cherry and licorice flavors in this full-bodied Petit Verdot. The palate is woody and shows abundant tannins, but it’s elegantly concentrated, finishing on an earthy note. Pairs well: beef / prime rib, venison, elk, roast lamb Rating: Wine Enthusiast 89  …$27.99

Shilda, Saperavi, 2019, red, Kakheti, Georgian Republic, Alc.12.5%, Varietal: Saperavi Tasting: Powerfully aromatic herbs, blackberry, blueberry, black cherry. On the palette red plum, red currant, black cherry, chalk, menthol, eucalyptus, and a bit of “coconutty” oak flavor. Acid is bright and with tannins that are super fine grained. Can go toe-to-toe with Cru Bourgeois Bordeaux or a good Chianti. Pairs well: loves savory cuisine, match to duck, goose and game birds….$14.99

Carol Shelton “Wild Thing”, Old Vine Zinfandel, Mendocino County, 2018. Alc. 14.5%, Varietal: Blend – Zinfandel, Carignane, Petite Sirah, Tasting: Aromas of black cherry, ripe plum and raspberry fruit combine with a hint of cigar box, and vanilla-oak baking spice loveliness. Smoothly textured in mouth, and the palate it’s creamy and round, with a finish that is long with lush jammy fruit. Pairs well: lamb chops, lamb shank, ribeye roast…versatile with food.  Rating: Wine Spectator 91, Wine Enthusiast 90 … $19.99

Our Expanding Collection of Fine Wines In Half-Bottles …pleased to offer a wide selection of fine wines in half-bottles representing most every category…bubbly to dessert to fortified Marsalas!…Perfect for two when one glass each will do!

After close to four decades, there is likely no book contained in theSawyer Free Libraryunfamiliar to long-time library assistantJohn Prybot.

This month, John Pyrbot will retire after working for 35 years at the Sawyer Free Library. Through eight library directors and so many changes in the Library, John has remained a constant and reassuring presence, busy reshelving stacks with the latest titles, helping young and old alike find a book or an answer, and chatting with patrons most of whom he knows by name.

“I have always tried my very best to serve our library patrons. That’s been my overriding and unwavering goal, as well as the Sawyer Free Library itself as an institution,” said John Prybot about his long tenure at the Library. “My life in Gloucester revolves around the Library. Dinner in the North End

We enjoyed a night in Boston on Tuesday and had dinner in the North End before the Bruins game. While the final score of the game was fairly horrible, a night in the city is usually a good cure for the winter blues.

Everything Old Is New Again

Here are a couple of headlines from February 1956 Gloucester Daily Times. Does it feel a little bit like history is repeating itself with news about vaccinations for children and Gloucester tuna fishermen?
