WINES

J. Hofstätter Pino GrigioAlto Adige DOC, Italy

Varietal: Pinot GrigioAlc.13.5%

Alto Adige is one of Italy’s smallest wine growing regions, and the northernmost, bordering on Switzerland and Austria. It has become one of Italy’s top white wine producing areas, and J. Hofstätter is its largest family estate winery. The HofstätterPinot Grigio pours a bright straw yellow and has an attractive aroma of citrus fruits, peach, honeydew melon, and pear; it is medium rich, fruity, well-structured, and direct on the palate with orchard fruit flavors and tangy, fruity acidity on the finish.

Pairs well with pasta and fish dishes. $21.99

Domaine Marcel Deiss2020 Alsace Complantation, France

Varietals: Alsace white AOCAlc.13.5%

Located in Bergheim next to Ribeauvillé, in the heart of the Grand Cru area, the Marcel Deiss estate was founded in 1947. Currently managed by Mathieu Deiss with the help of his father, Jean-Michel, the estate aims for quality based on terroir rather than on cloned grape varieties; the winemakers adhere to biodynamic methods of very low yields and agroforestry. This wine comes exclusively from the vineyards of Domaine Marcel Deiss. It is made with the 13 varieties of grapes that represent the Alsace AOC, including Riesling, Gewürztraminer, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Sylvaner, and Muscat. The wine expresses the depth of the Alsatian terroir. Notes of lemon, white flowers, pineapple, and yellow peach mix on the nose. On the palate it is lively and remarkably fruity, full and ripe but still fresh. Pairs well with a wide variety of dishes, including seafood, chicken, and pork. $27.99

Steinbock Riesling

Varietal: RieslingAlc.11%

The owners of the Hofstätter winery in Italy’s Alto Adige have a passion for Riesling, which is why in 2014 they took the

opportunity to revive the traditional Weingut Dr.

Fischer on the Saar River in Germany. This Riesling is straw yellow in the glass. The wine shows pineapple and citrus aromas on the nose. It is soft and refreshing on the palate, with striking minerality and an elegant body, and finishes off-dry.

Pairs well with fish dishes, salads, and sushi. $17.99

Chateau Puech-Haut Argali Rosé, Languedoc, France

Varietals : 60% Grenache, 40% Cinsault Alc. 13%

Languedoc is one of the most exciting regions in France right now. Château Puech-Haut is a prestigious estate in the eastern Languedoc producing top quality wines for very reasonable prices. The wines from Puech-Haut are rich and lush but also show the earthy and mineral character of the rocky clay-limestone soils of the region. They benefit from both its proximity to the Mediterranean and the rugged, mountainous interior. The Argali Rosé pours a pale pink color and has a complex citrus nose. It offers clean, crisp notes of white peach, strawberries, and hint of flowers on the palate. Lovely as an aperitif. Pairs well with rice dishes, Mediterranean cuisine, salads, and vegetables.$24.99

Averaen 2019 Willamette Valley Pinot Noir AVA, Oregon

Varietal: Pinot Noir Alc.13.6%

The seeds of Averaen winery were sown at the International Pinot Noir Celebration in 2013 in the Willamette Valley. The winemakers from Banshee Wines in Sonoma were struck by the similarities between the cold, foggy Sonoma coast and the Willamette Valley, and realized making high-quality Pinot Noir in the Willamette Valley would be far less expensive than in Sonoma. The first Averaen Pinot Noir was released in 2015 to high praise, and they have continued to produce fine Pinot Noir ever since. The 2019 Averaen Pinot Noir is juicy, with flavors of dark cherry, cranberry, and blackberry. Black tea, anise, blood orange, and vanilla accents add complexity. The texture is ripe and plush with a line of acid running through. Pairs well with seared salmon or tuna, mushroom dishes, pulled pork, and barbecue. $22.99

I Greppi Greppicante Bolgheri Rosso 2018,Tuscany, Italy

Varietals: 60% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon Alc. 14%

Bolgheri is a relatively young yet prestigious Italian appellation located in the Maremma on the Tuscan coast and named after a town in the north of the region. It is known mainly for deeply colored, supple yet age-worthy red wines, usually based on the Bordeaux grape varieties. Until the 1970s, the area was regarded elsewhere in Tuscany as a swampy zone producing nondescript white wines and rosés, and better suited to other farming, in contrast to the prime Tuscan vineyards further up in the hills. Then in 1978, in a blind tasting arranged by Decanter magazine, a wine from Bolgheri beat out several Bordeauxs. Ever since, the reputation of the area has grown. The Greppicante Bolgheri Rosso has aromas of currants and blackberries and hints of rosemary and flowers on the nose. On the palate, it is full-bodied, with lush fruit, rich meat, and leather flavors and a long finish.

Pairs well with foods in rich sauces, stews, duck, veal, and mature cheeses.$29.99

While you’re in the store, take a look at some of the new beers we have for summer: a citrusy saison from Cambridge Brewing Company called Working Class Hero; an NEIPA from Riverwalk Brewing called Hit of Haze, and one of the best Belgian-style white beers this side of Belgium, Allagash White — made with coriander and curaçao orange peel, it’s lovely on a hot summer day.
