BlackBurn BrewFest

The organizers of the first ever Blackburn Brew Fest should be pretty proud. Such a great event that will no doubt get even better. Be sure to keep an eye out and plan around it next year. The live music was phenomenal. Over the Bridge played the whole time I was there and were fantastic as always. There were 27 local breweries for sampling (included in the price of admission) under two large tents and several food trucks along the perimeter. Several of the breweries were ones that I had heard of before, but there were many that were completely new to me. It was really great hearing them talk about their beers and the inspiration behind the flavors. Fun vibes along the waterfront in Gloucester’s Stage Fort Park made for a really fabulous afternoon.

Northern Lights Farmstand Has Hidden Treasures

Something about September weekends makes me want to go to the local farmstands and look at the available harvest. We were riding up 133 and decided to stop at Northern Lights Farmstand in Ipswich (243 High St) as we had not been there in a while. Marshalls, of course, is also great but this is the area we happened to be in. Jim went straight inside but I was drawn to the “pick your own” flower beds. Then I wandered around the flowers and the back parts of the area and found all sorts of delightful surprises: chickens, donkeys, Francesca the pig! It’s a great little stop especially for curious children and senior citizens.

The store is packed with fresh fruits, vegetables, breads and even Virgilios sauce. Not surprisingly, we took home more than we had intended to. There doesn’t seem to be a website or updated Facebook page but additional information can be found at this link. You won’t be sorry you stopped at this fun farmstand.

Jackie Bennett Is Curious About This Rock Formation On The Back Shore

I wonder if anyone can help me with this rock formation on the Back Shore.  What is the black in the granite.  It looks like it was poured in.

Eagle Guarding Stage Fort Park

I have spotted this eagle overlooking Stage Fort Park a couple of times recently. It doesn’t typically hang around for long and the leaves hide it pretty well but it’s still a spectacular blessing to have it watching over our harbor.

City of Gloucester Extends Ban On AllNon-Essential Outdoor Water Use as Drought Conditions Persist

GLOUCESTER – Mayor Greg Verga and the City of Gloucester report that a temporary ban on all non-essential outdoor water use is being extended until the end of September due to continuing drought conditions.

The City implemented a two-week ban on all non-essential outdoor water use beginning on Sept. 1.

The ban is now being extended until September 30th. Despite some recent rainfall, drought conditions persist and the City’s water capacity remains at just 51 percent. The status of the ban will be reevaluated on September 30th.

“I would like to ask all Gloucester residents, whether they use city water or have private wells, to help us preserve our natural resources during this critical drought period,” said Mayor Verga. “I appreciate residents’ cooperation and understanding of these necessary restrictions. We intend to keep this ban in place for as short a time as possible, but despite some recent rainfall, conditions remain critical, and we cannot responsibly lift the ban at this time.”

The Northeast Region of Massachusetts remains in a Level 3 Critical Drought. Per MassDEP, this level of drought warrants such a ban on all non-essential outdoor water use. DEP considers “essential” water use as:
for health or safety reasonsby regulationfor the production of food and fiberfor the maintenance of livestockto meet the core functions of a businessFailure to adhere to the restrictions can lead to the imposition of fines.

Drought conditions result in dry grass, shrubbery, and forest areas, as well as dry soil conditions, increasing the wildland fire risk. Cape Ann communities have seen multiple brush fires in recent weeks. Brush fires take multiple days to extinguish and exhaust local and regional resources.

All outdoor fires, including the use of outdoor fireplaces, firepits, and chimineas are prohibited during this time of critical drought. Residents are also asked to take care when disposing of combustible materials including the disposal of cigarettes.
