Chief Eric Smith is pleased to announce that the Gloucester Fire Department was awarded $4,381 for the Fiscal Year 2023 Student Awareness of Fire Education (S.A.F.E.) Program and $2,277 for the Senior SAFE Program by the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services.

The funding gives the department the opportunity to work directly with students in schools and seniors to educate them about fire safety and prevention. Each program is tailored to the common needs of each age group and includes general fire prevention reminders and safe practices in the home. Lessons feature many safety topics including steps to take if a fire alarm goes off.

The lessons taught in the school-based program are in line with the standards of the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education Health Curriculum Frameworks and the state Department of Fire Services Curriculum Planning Guidebook.

Twenty-seven years after the introduction of the S.A.F.E program within schools, the rate of annual child fire deaths has decreased by 78%, according to the state’s Department of Fire Services, which administers the two programs.

I took a walk along the State Pier on a sunny day recently to take a closer look at some of the mighty vessels. I thought you might enjoy the same.

A Traditional Wood Fired Sauna Experience

Abundance Sauna will be at the Lanesville Community Center in Lanesville, celebrating National Sauna Week Friday & Saturday February 17th-18th, 2023.

There are many sessions available each day, starting as early as 10:00am. On Saturday sessions are one hour the cost is $65 regardless of the number of people in your party. The sauna comfortably accommodates 3 people at once. A session is 50 minutes of heat and 10 minutes for turn over. You are welcome to book available consecutive sessions for a longer sauna experience.

We are delighted to announce that Maritime Gloucester’s NEW Maritime Science Education Center is OPENING on Friday, January 27 with a Ribbon Cutting at 3:30pm with VIP, Media and Press docent-led tours immediately following.

Michael and I would love to see you on January 27 to personally showcase our newly renovated and innovative space here at Maritime Gloucester.

Most importantly I’d like to thank all those local businesses and residents that donated raffle prizes and bought raffle tickets that drove home the huge number for Scottie’s care. I’d be remiss to not mention Warren Waugh and Karen Hanson for their support in the darkest days of trying to get Scottie home.
