Photo bombed. This seagull had places to be and didn’t want to wait as I tried to take a photo of the lighthouse. He does have the right of way, I suppose.

Cape Ann Light Station Thacher Island is a National Historic Landmark and I highly recommend a visit. Tickets for launch reservations are available on their website (click here for info) and it’s a very pleasant way to spend a few hours on a nice day. Jim had never been out there and it had been a while for me, so off we went a few days ago. It’s run entirely by volunteers who couldn’t have been more pleasant, even after we delayed departure due to our lack of attention to details like the launch location (now Rockport Granite Pier). I recommend wearing boots or sturdy footwear as the paths are a little uneven, but mostly due to bird poop. Jim climbed the 156 steps to the top of North Tower and wanted a photo as proof, so here you go.

Accordingly, the 2023 commercial striped bass fishery will close effective immediately. Click the link in our bio to read the full advisory.

Last weekend featured the Gloucester Fisheries Heritage festival on the Jodrey State Fish Pier, as part of Gloucester’s 400+ year anniversary celebration. Elsewhere around Cape Ann life was playing out normally.

Dear Joey,
Manny’s photos are amazing!
He is a gifted, reliable, incredibly generous, SO creative and devoted contributor to making the magic of GMG fly.
I am in awe of how he can put people at their ease and draw them into spontaneous, natural, beautiful character studies…no matter what age, what background, their faces come alive and you just wanta know more about them, and you realize: Manny is truly our good-will Ambassador, welcoming them to Gloucester with photographic honor and hugs.
Just look at his work with happy people on the harbor shuttle, hard-working people on the docks (like you Joey!), school students in Gloucester, and man’s best friend: he goes for it, everyday, and it must take hours…
His posts about DES and Our Lady of Good Voyage and the St Peter’s Fiesta bring such important (and beautiful!) recognition to faith, family and generations of people who (along with many others) just make this place so real, so alive, so down to earth and not “fake for tourists.”
I grew up in Cape May long before it got discovered and so over-developed. We always called our walkway along the ocean “the promenade.”
Half the time i still call Stacyboulevard “the promenade” too! Why? Because people LOVE to walk this gorgeous, flower-filled (or sleet hammered) way, great for dogs and wheelchairs and strollers because people CRAVE being close to the Ocean, as close as they can get by “promenading” for joy, health, pleasure…
“Dar un paseo, dar un paseo.”
Manny, you and your photos are an absolute treasure and a magnificent monument to the real Gloucester, our Gloucester and its heart: our boulevard, our promenade.
Thanks Joey for sticking up for Manny (and our town) in the most positive, passionate way!
Abrazos!
Eleanor Marks

We will be featuring some of Gloucester’s best golfers on a special GloucesterCast to discuss what it takes to bring home the cup to Bass Rocks!!!

Around 5:30, the thunder started with some lightning, but no rain. It was a beautiful weekend of sunshine and beach weather.

Top of the Mornin’…

The unbelievable amount of people flying out of the woodwork to correct Manny was dis heartening.
I should know after 15 years blogging that it’s just the way it is.
People’s minds who reside in negativity live for the mistakes of others and relish the chance to point out other’s mistakes.
The lesson is this- you need to understand that these people while they rush to criticize are really the minority and you should feel sorry for them.
They have to live inside that hyper negative world.
The good part for the rest of us if we understand this is that we don’t have to hang around them and value the positive uplifting people in our lives that much more.
Surround yourself with people that are trying to lift others up instead of tear them down.
I promise you’ll be happier for it.
Watch the video. Don’t be the jackass that’s criticizing people that are trying to make our community a better place. Fuck those people.

From across town, I noticed that both the Ardelle and the Isabella had their sails up while docked behind Maritime Gloucester on Harbor Loop, so I went directly to capture the moments. I didn’t need a real excuse to go down there, it’s one of my favorites. The area was being prepared for the Annisquam Village Player production of “Gloucester Story” for the celebration of Gloucester 400+. Anyhow, it made me smile and perhaps you will do the same.

photo block 5pm-930pm observed sky: The many weather moods in 4 hours on August 13, 2023. Capped off with red (sprites) and white lightning visible from Long Beach 9-10:00 P.M. The lightning looked a bit like far off fireworks. Red and orange bursts and dashes registered some on cell phone (4 sec video clips below). Bet there were some beautiful night and day photos!

Rainbow and crepuscular rays- Rainbow streaks shine on Thacher Island.

7 seconds (tough to see: look for red in the middle of the frame at about 4 sec mark. May need to enlarge to full size to bypass the ‘play’ button)
10 seconds- look for dashes in the middle of the frame. White flicker on left was a drone
4 seconds- If this frame were split in 3 vertical strips, about 2 seconds in concentrate on the the left 1/3 to see a pinkish red pulse. Earlier in the evening there were sweeping arcs of diffused lightning
