FINE WINE TASTING with Augusto Gabriel, ambassador of Portuguese Wine

Join us Saturday as Augusto Gabriel will offer detailed information about the Portuguese wine region: the history as well as the indigenous grape varieties and the rules and laws of Portuguese wine.

Augusto was born in Portugal and has resided in the United States for over 30 years. For 20 years he has traveled throughout all the Portuguese wine regions. He has met, discussed, and studied this wine sector in detail with leading wine personalities across the country. He is recognized in the wine industry circles as one of the leading Portuguese wine experts. We always enjoy a visit from Augusto. We first met at an extraordinary wine dinner hosted by Chef Patrick Shea at C.K. Pearl. I found him so very informative and engaging, we invited him here. These wines represent several different regions in Portugal and no one knows them better than Augusto. Don’t miss a chance to learn a bit from him and enjoy the wonderful bounty of Portuguese wine country.

WINES

Quinta do Regueiro Foral Alvarinho, Melgaco, Portugal

Varietal: Alvarinho,Alc.12.5%

Melgaco is the original home of the Alvarinho grape. It is the most northern region of Portugal, protected by the surrounding mountains that allow a perfect marriage between rainfall, temperature, and the number of hours of sunshine needed for the maturation of the Alvarinho grape. In 1988, Paulo Rodrigu planted his first vineyards here. Over the following 10 years, he  continued to plant, increasing his production area to 15 hectares. His “Foral” is a very complex wine with great balance and style, packed with intense aromas of citrus, apple, pear and floral scents with a tropical background. The palate is full-bodied and voluminous, with a fresh and vibrant acidity and great minerality. Pairs well with ceviche, seafood risotto, grilled fish. $18.99

BeyraReserva White, Beira, Portugal

Varietals: 50% Fonte Cal, 30% Siria, 10% Verdelho, 10% Godelho, Alc. 13%

In 2011 winemaker Rui Roboredo Madeira returned to the same winery where he worked his first harvest in 1987, a small winery located in the village of Vermiosa, in the highest vineyards in Portugal. He rehabilitated the property because he believes that this region’s winemaking heritage is one of the most hidden treasures of Portuguese wines: old vines of native grape varieties perfectly adapted to the rugged climate caused by the high altitude, along with the soil, where many veins of quartz run through the schist and granite. The soul of this wine lies in the unique combination of the Síria and Fonte Cal native grape varieties, from vines planted in purely granite soils with quartz veins, in the Douro River’s hydrographical basin, at an average altitude of 725 meters above sea level. The wine has high minerality, notes of citrus, grapefruit, and vibrant acidity with a structure that promises good aging in the bottle. Pairs well with  shellfish, fatty fish, and cured goat cheeses. $18.99

Castello D’Alba White, Douro Valley, Portugal

Varietal: 60% Rabigato, 40% Viosinho, Alc.

Clean, fresh, and aromatic, this wine is aged for 4 months in stainless steel vats before bottling. Minerality with citrus and floral notes dominate, as is typical of wines from the high-altitude vineyards of the Douro. Complex aromas with a mineral character balanced with tropical and citrus fruits, white wildflowers, as well as discreet and evocative toasty hints of oak. Full and creamy on the palate, with nice body, freshness and a very long finish. This remarkable value earned a 90 point rating from Decanter and a Best Buy from Wine Enthusiast Magazine. Great with shellfish, seafood pastas, soft cheeses and spicy aromatic dishes. $14.99

The Douro valley offers extraordinarily good conditions for wine grapes on the steeply shelved slopes of the River Douro, hill after hill stretching off to the horizon with narrow roads winding around their contours. Here, the vine terraces bask in the sun that provides ideal climatic conditions, heating the pure schist and granite soil that is typical within this region. For centuries, Douro growers have been supplying the world with Port. Now wine experts the world over recognize that the Douro region also offers ideal conditions for making unfortified wines of the highest quality, both red and white. Rui Roboredo Madeira produced his first wine here in 2000. Today, Castello D’Alba is one of the Douro’s leading brands.

Castello D’Alba Red, Douro Valley, Portugal

Varietal: 40% TintaRoriz, 30% Touriga Nacional, 30% Touriga Franca, Alc.13.5%

Castello D’Alba Red is a blend of three Douro varietals. It has aromas of red berries and spices with hints of rock rose, flowers, and blackberries. It is very smooth on the palate with balanced acidity and fine tannins. Pairs well with roasted chicken, grilled pork, hamburgers. $14.99

Van Zellers Douro Red, Douro Valley, Portugal

Varietals: Field Blend of 30+ varieties, Alc.15 %

Founded as a port wine company in the early 17th century, Van Zellers has 15 generations of experience in crafting the world’s most exceptional ports. Now Van Zellers, like other producers in the Douro, has turned to making unfortified wines. All our grapes were foot trodden in open air tanks for 1 to 3 days before fermentation and then fermented in stainless steel vats for 7 to 10 days. The Douro Red is complex and structured. It has aromas of dark fruits and wild berries. On the palate, it is fruity, spicy, and full. Pairs well with game, veal, mushroom dishes. $29.99

Take Me Out To The Ballgame

Take me out to the ballgame. While the Red Sox might be fighting for last place in the American League, you still can’t go wrong spending the night at Fenway Park. I was super lucky that someone offered me four pretty amazing seats behind home plate for last night’s game and we enjoyed a really fun night at the ballpark. Some of you might know that Fenway Park is one of my favorite places in the world!

Gloucester Officials Offer Safety Tips, Encourage Residents to Stay Alert as Hurricane Lee Forecast to Track Toward New England

Mayor Greg Verga, Police Chief Edward Conley, and Fire Chief Eric Smith ask residents to remain alert and take necessary precautions as Hurricane Lee is expected to track toward New England in the coming days.
According to the National Hurricane Center, Lee is moving toward the north-northwest and a turn toward the north is expected by tonight.
Public safety officials are receiving briefings as the situation is updated, and are staying current on storm tracks and forecasts to ensure staffing is in place to deal with any emergency.
Hurricanes can bring many different types of wind and water hazards, including storm surges, strong winds and flooding. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) offer several tips to help residents better prepare for extreme weather:

Know Your Evacuation Zone

Learn if you live or work in a hurricane evacuation zone. If you live in an area that may flood and you may need assistance evacuating, plan with family, neighbors, and friends to determine who may be able to assist. Contact your local public safety officials to make them aware of your needs.

Make an Emergency Plan

Have an emergency plan for how your family would communicate, evacuate, and shelter in place that addresses the needs of all family members, including seniors, children, individuals with access and functional needs, and pets. If you receive medical treatment or home health care services, work with your medical provider to determine how to maintain care and service if you are unable to leave your home or have to evacuate.
Steps to making an emergency plan include:
  • Discuss the questions below with your family, friends or household to start your emergency plan.
    • How will I receive emergency alerts and warnings?
    • What is my shelter plan?
    • What is my evacuation route?
    • What is my family/household communication plan?
  • Consider specific needs in your household.
  • Fill out a Family Emergency Plan. A sample plan can be found here.
  • Practice your plan with your family/household.

Build an Emergency Kit

Build an emergency kit that will sustain your household for three to five days without power.
A basic emergency supply kit may include the following recommended items:
  • Food and water
  • Battery-powered or hand crank radio and a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert
  • Flashlight and extra batteries
  • First aid kit, including prescription medicine
  • Disinfectants, moist towelettes, hand sanitizer, and cleaning supplies
  • Whistle (to signal for help)
  • Dust mask (to help filter contaminated air)
  • Plastic sheeting and duct tape (to shelter in place)
  • Moist towelettes, garbage bags, and plastic ties (for personal sanitation)
  • Wrench or pliers (to turn off utilities)
  • Manual or battery-powered can opener (for food)
  • Local maps
  • Cell phone with chargers and a backup battery

Preparing at home

  • Check flashlights and portable radios to confirm they’re working. Fully charge your cell phone, laptop and any other devices before the storm.
  • Check the batteries in smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
  • If you own a car, make sure the gas tank is at least half full should you need to travel.
  • Have an emergency food supply in case of a power outage. People should have supplies to sustain their families for at least 72 hours.
  • Set your refrigerator and freezer to their coldest settings (remember to reset them back to normal once power is restored). During an outage, minimize the number of times you open the refrigerator or freezer door.
  • Prepare your home by securing or bringing in outdoor objects (patio furniture, children’s toys, trash cans, etc.) that could be swept away or damaged during strong winds or flooding. Also, elevate items in your basement in case of flooding, check your sump pump, unplug sensitive electronic equipment, park vehicles in areas that are unlikely to flood and remove boats from the water.
  • Bring in boats from moorings or add extra lines to secure them. The Harbormaster will not be responding to boats off of mooring until the storm weakens and it is safe for crews to respond.
  • MEMA recommends purchasing a generator to maintain electricity in an outage. NEVER run a generator indoors, in a garage, or with the exhaust facing the home or home air intakes.
  • Pack a bag with important items in case you need to evacuate. Don’t forget to include needed medications and any valuable personal belongings.

Should a Weather Event Occur

  • Don’t go out during a hurricane or tropical storm, if possible.
  • Call 9-1-1 to report emergencies, including downed power lines and gas leaks.
  • Stay away from downed utility wires. Always assume a downed power line is live.
  • Report power outages to your utility company. Do not call 9-1-1 to report an outage or to ask about power restoration.
  • Be a good neighbor. Check on family, friends, and neighbors, especially the elderly, those who live alone, those with medical conditions and those who may need additional assistance.

Stay Informed

Every family should have multiple methods for receiving emergency alerts. Learn more about different types of alerting and information tools including the Emergency Alert System, Wireless Emergency Alerts, NOAA Weather Radio, social and traditional news media, and your local notification systems.
