2024 International Dory Races Held in Gloucester

We attended the annual International Dory Races hosted by Gloucester this morning under a mantle of showers and fog. We could not stay for all of the races but I can report that in the Exhibition Race, the Canadian Senior Women came across the finish line first. For the Juniors, the Gloucester team of Kaden and AJ Lewis finished ahead of the Canadians Parker Spindler and Ryan Hirtle. The Mixed Double race saw Canadians Lisa Tanner and Robert Fox cross the line ahead of Jimmy Tarantino and Sarah LeWine. These results and additional details are included here. (thanks Sara Gray!). Welcome to our Canadian friends! Back to Nova Scotia in August.

Lanes Coven’s belief is that nature is a Shakespeare actor’s best tool (after an audience!) All productions this summer are performed under a tented stage on the peaceful grounds of Windhover Center for the Performing Arts in Rockport, MA. Director of A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Co- Founding Artistic Director, Lily Narbonne, wrote in Quarto (published by Shakespeare Theatre Association):

“As a Director I’m asking, how can I help audiences get out of their own heads and, via Shakespeare, walk away wanting to take action for their community and the land around them?”

Cast & Crew:

Adrianna Mitchell (Fat Ham, Broadway) playing Titania/Hippolyta, and Kadeem Ali Harris (Amazon’s “Harlem” ) playing Bottom return to Lanes Coven from The Bronx, NY.

Justin Genna, Co- Founding Artistic Director will play the roles of Oberon/ Theseus.

Returning- after her memorable Mercutio in last summer’s Romeo and Juliet- is Eryn O’Sullivan in the role of Helena; Max Mcnamara as Lysander; and Malachi Rosen as Peter Quince.

New to Lanes Coven are Julia Herzberg as Hermia, Eliza Fitcher as Puck/ Egeus and Nate Stephenson as Demetrius. Stage Manager is Tara Hightower, and Assisting is Allie Nadeau. The newly instated Educational Acting Intern Company consists of all local Cape Ann emerging actors, Ella Mooradian, Mia Contilli, and Nate Oaks. Jennifer Greeke is this year’s costume designer.

Nighttime Harbor Views

We had the opportunity to be out on the harbor after sunset recently. The activity and the lights fascinated me. It’s a perspective I don’t often get to enjoy but I always look forward to the chance.

There’s a reason I always say the number one thing I’d recommend anyone to do in Gloucester if they could only do one thing is go for a sail on The Schooner Thomas E Lannon

Captain Heath Ellis and his crew are genuinely friendly hosts on the most beautiful ship in the harbor and you get to experience getting out on the water without the costs associated with boat ownership.

It is magic.

WINES

Louis Perdrier, Burgundy, France

Varietals: Ugni Blanc, Colombard, Chenin, Folle Blanche, Menu Pineau. Alc. 11 %

This is a refreshing picnic wine with light acidity, touches of pears and bright summer fruits. Its low alcohol makes it great for summer sunshine. $14.99

Domaine Gerard Fiou Sancerre Blanc “Le Grand Roc,” Sancerre, France, Varietal: Sauvignon Blanc Alc.13%

Minerality alternates with a vanilla undercurrent with maturing citrus notes that can also be detected on the palate. The powerful flint starts to melt in a round and lively mouth. Superbly balanced. $39.99

Octopoda 2021 Sonoma County Chardonnay, Russian River Valley, California

Varietal: Chardonnay Alc.14.5%

Octopoda Chardonnay offers notes of white flowers, grapefruit, baked apples, buttered popcorn and a beautiful, toasted oak finish, and some flint. Pairs well with fish, grilled vegetables, and pesto. $19.99

Chateau Trians Rose, Provence, France

Varietals: Grenache, Cinsault, Syrah Alc.13%

Bright and fresh, yet dry, with notes of pomegranate, red berries, lilac, rose and even a bit of pink grapefruit, it’s an excellent partner for sunny days, poultry, and summery salads. $17.99

Panther Creek Winemaker’s Cuvee, Willamette Valley, Oregon, 2019

Varietal: Pinot Noir Alc. 14%

Dark garnet in color, it has a beautiful but soft aroma of red cherry and ripe stone fruit with hints of cola, and vanilla. On the palate there is an off-dry taste of stone fruit, moving to strong ripe cherry, then becoming quite dry with citrus and spice at the end. $27.99

Natale Verga Intré Rosso, Lombardy, Italy

Varietals: Corvina, Sangiovese, Nero d’Avola, Alc. 14%

Flavors of red currants, blackberries, black cherry mingle with a sweet spice of licorice; while the tannins are present, they lead to a soft, lingering finish. $14.99

Octopoda Cabernet Franc, Sonoma, California

Varietal: 90% Cabernet Franc, 10% Petit Verdot Alc. 14.5%

Aromas of black cherry, blackberry jam, black currant, tarragon, dark chocolate, and fresh and dried tobacco leaf lead to notes of crushed violet, toasted wood and black pepper spice on the palate, alongside a firm tannic texture, modest acidity, and an aromatic finish. $19.99

Clendenen 2019 Nebbiolo “Bricco Buon Natale,” California

Varietal: Nebbiolo Alc. 14%

Floral and berry aromas jump from the glass with secondary aromas of rose hip, orange zest, black currant, anise, dark cocoa just starting to develop. The intriguing bouquet is joined by dark cherry and plum fruit well integrated on the palate. $39.99
