Gabriel Garcia Márquez (1927-2014)

Columbian by birth, Márquez left the study of the law at the National University to take up a career as a journalist, ultimately working for newspapers in both Columbia and Venezuela before beginning to write novels and short stories in mid-life. His 1967 book One Hundred Years of Solitude was an almost immediate success, selling 30 million copies and garnering the 1972 Nobel Prize for Literature. Márquez is credited with launching the Magic Realism genre in which miraculous things happen to ordinary people in ordinary settings. A superstar in Latin American art circles, his leftist politics have often put him at odds with various regimes at the peril of his freedom. Although his fame allowed him to facilitate talks between the Columbian government and M-19 guerillas, his friendship with Fidel Castro and his criticism of US interventionist policies made him persona non grata in the States.

EntrainPoster_900bArchaeologists have dated instruments back at least 37,000 years. They figure the first ones were likely made long before that and were probably flutes and drums.  Suffice it to say that when we hear and feel drums, most of us react instinctively by moving — even if it’s just a little bit — and our consciousness changes a little bit too.  This Saturday, you can feel what I’m talking about at Gloucester’s UU Meetinghouse when we present ENTRAIN.  In case you haven’t guessed, it’s the perfect venue to experience drums for lots of reasons.  Built in 1806, it’s the oldest standing church building in Gloucester; it’s made of wood; the acoustics are spectacular!

Hello Birdie!

Last week my friend Catherine and her family gave me a stick-on bird feeder for my window, along with a bag of wild bird food. Janet installed it last Saturday, May 3rd. I was told that birds will discover the seed banquet in a few days to a week. I can't wait to say "Hello Birdie!"

Rubber Duck is trying to convince Joey to buy a lime tree. Fragrant blossoms that turn into limes that are the tastiest limes for Bombay Gin and Schweppes Tonic. Or skip the tonic, just gin on ice and a nice fact wedge of lime ripened on the tree.
Rubber Duck is trying to convince Joey to buy a lime tree. Fragrant blossoms that turn into limes that are the tastiest limes for Bombay Gin and Schweppes Tonic. Or skip the tonic, just gin on ice and a nice fact wedge of lime ripened on the tree.

After spending the winter in the dusty old shop the lime tree is so happy to be outside in the fresh air and sun. A blast of fertilizer a few weeks ago and it is already cranking out the flowers for this summer’s gin & tonics, and pad thai.
