Hi Joey- My name is Julie Arvedon and I handle PR for Boston Children’s Theatre. I was talking with Mary Barthelmes at the Wenham Museum yesterday and she recommended that I reach out to you as well. BCT is so excited to be bringing our family-friendly holiday production of THE VELVETEEN RABBIT to the North Shore this season. We will be performing at the Manninen Center for the Arts at Endicott College December 6 – 21. Many of our young actors are from the North Shore and BCT’s Executive Artistic Director Burgess Clark and Executive Director Toby Schine both live in Beverly. This past summer we were also conducting our summer program at Shore Country Day.
A rocking horse that talks, boats that dance, a toy soldier that marches and a soft, endearing rabbit who changes a young boyâs life. This is all part of the magic created on stage in Boston Childrenâs Theatreâs (BCT) annual production of the classic childrenâs story THE VELVETEEN RABBIT. Returning for a 6th season, THE VELVETEEN RABBIT will be performed this year at Endicott Collegeâs Manninen Center for the Arts in Beverly from December 6 â 21.
By combining the unique art of puppetry with live actors on stage, THE VELVETEEN RABBIT captures the essence of the holiday spirit with memorable characters and beautifully hand-crafted puppets designed by Marjorie Tudor of the Tasha Tudor Family. âWe are so proud to bring such a heartwarming story to our audiences each year during the holiday season,â said BCT Executive Artistic Director Burgess Clark. âThe magic and joy of The Velveteen Rabbit appeals to all ages and itâs wonderful to see multi-generational families come together to enjoy this touching tale of friendship, love and loyalty. We are especially excited this season to bring one of our most cherished productions to new audiences on the North Shore.â
Adapted by Clark from the classic childrenâs book by Margery Williams, THE VELVETEEN RABBIT tells the moving and amusing story of a friendship and love between a boy and his beloved Velveteen Rabbit. Audiences follow the boy and his stuffed rabbit on a journey that ends with a life lesson that is guaranteed to warm the heart.
Directed by Jay Pension, THE VELVETEEN RABBIT features young actors from 10 area communities. The cast includes Amesbury student Carly Gendell as âBoyâ; Beverly actress Katie Clarke as âNanaâ; Lexington student Chloe Thorburn as âRabbitâ; Peabody actress Jenney Dale Holland as âMargeryâ; Quincy student Alex Cox as âWooden Lionâ; Sudbury student Owen Sherrin as âSkin Horseâ; Tyngsborough student Cameron Perrin as âVelveteen Rabbitâ; Wayland student Sophie Stowell as âFairyâ; Winthrop student Heather Buccini as âRabbitâ; and Worcester student Sima Kasten as âTin Soldierâ.
THE VELVETEEN RABBIT will be performed at Endicott Collegeâs Manninen Center for the Arts, 376 Hale Street, Beverly, MA. Performances are December 6 at 2:00 pm; December 7 at 6:00 pm, December 13 at 4:30 pm, December 14 at 2:00 pm and 4:00 pm, December 20 at 2 :00 pm and 4:00 pm, and December 21 at 12 noon and 2:00 pm. Tickets are $27.00 and can be purchased by visiting the BCT website at www.bostonchildrenstheatre.org or calling the BCT Box Office at 617-424-6634, x222. Grandparents Packages are also available that include 2 tickets to the show, a special souvenir and a photo with the cast. School groups can also reserve tickets for weekday performances by contacting the BCT Box Office.

Hello Joey,
We are a group of concerned Gloucester residents that are trying to spread the word regarding the proposed height of the cell tower in West Gloucester and it’s permanent impact on our scenic shoreline and hiking vistas. I am requesting that you post a reference to our grassroots website, www.notalltower.org, on GoodMorningGloucester so that local residents can be more informed before the zoning board of appeals soon makes a decision. Feel free to grab an image from the site if you should choose to post an article on the matter.

New Film: A Flight of Monarchs
When watching, know that the first two minutes of the film were shot in Gloucester. I think you will be dazzled by the sheer numbers of Monarchs that travel through Cape Ann’s backyards and meadows during the peak of migration.
I began photographing the Monarchs in 2006, which was a year when we had an extraordinary number of Monarchs visiting our shores. At that time, I became determined that if ever again this phenomenon were to occur on Cape Ann, I was going to have the ability to document on film, rather than only through still images, this beautiful event for my community. It’s hard to imagine without observing and here you can see what I have wanted to share.
A Flight of Monarchs begins on a September day as first one and then passels of Monarchs begin to arrive to the fields and meadows of Cape Ann, carried across Massachusetts Bay on a tailwind. By the early evening light they begin to pour into the surrounding trees, clustering to stay warm in the branches furthest away from the prevailing breezes. The following morning as the sun begins to touch their wings, they alight from the trees, seeking the freshest wildflowers from which to drink nectar to help build their lipid reserves for the several thousand mile journey south. They drink and drink until the last of the sun’s rays dip below the tree line. As they arrived on a tailwind, they again depart, and are carried to the next gathering area. For coastal Monarchs, Allens Pond, which is located in Westport, Massachusetts is often the next stop.
In the next scene, the butterflies have arrived to the sacred oyamel fir forests of Angangueo, MichoacĂĄn, deep in the heart of the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt. It’s early morning and the butterflies are suspended in great primordial branched clusters that may become so heavy from the weight of so many butterflies the boughs of the trees bend to the breaking point. Later in the day, as the sun begins to warm their wings, the butterflies begin to stir. During the winter, it is imperative that the Monarch’s body temperature remains relatively low. They leave the sunniest branches in search of shade and a drink of water from nearby mountain streams. Occasionally in late February, as the air temperatures begin to warm with the coming springtime, for a short period during the day, the butterflies leave the trees all at once. This phenomenon is called a butterfly “explosion,” and is a truly magnificent event to observe.
A Flight of Monarchs is set to the evocative and tender “Fields of Blue,” written and performed by composer and guitarist Jesse Cook and his band, to which permission was granted by the artist for the purpose of this short film. Here is a link to Cookâs website. I highly, highly recommend attending a live performance of Jesse Cook and Company. As was I, you will be completely taken by their gorgeous music, exquisite artistry, and with Cookâs songwriting, will travel in beautiful melodies inspired from around the world.
I am currently editing my feature length documentary, Beauty on the Wing, which after months and months of organizing and editing three years of footage, is currently running at approximately twelve hours in length. At eleven hours too long, I have a great deal of editing to accomplish in the coming winter months!
A Flight of Monarchs presented here is the shorter version of the film that I created for the Berkshire Museum’s “Butterflies” exhibit. The first version is six minutes long and played on a continuous loop in the main gallery of the exhibit hall. The longer version will soon be posted on Vimeo.

Bates Basketball – Babson Invitational Champion – How would have Roger Babson felt?
Anthony L Burnham submits-
Bates Menâs Basketball defeated Babson College at the buzzer 54-51 to claim the 29th Babson Invitational Champion at Babson College this past Sunday. Captained by Gloucester standout Adam Philpott, Bates opened the season defeating Nichols 81-78 on Saturday to advance to defeat the #23rd nationally ranked Babson College Beavers. With a healthy Gloucester crowd in attendance, how would have Roger Babson, the Gloucester native and Babson College founder felt? To add to the irony, the current Bates squad has Gloucester native, and football captain, Mike Tomaino, as a student assistant. Additionally, current Babson head coach, Stephen Brennan, is a 1987 Bates College grad and 3 year college roommate of Gloucesterâs Anthony Burnham. What would have Roger wrote on a rock in Dogtown after this weekend?

EVENT DESCRIPTION:
The Gloucester Unitarian Universalist Church is pleased to announce the next event of its monthly series called Music & Meditation in the Meetinghouse (MMM) that offers Cape Ann residents and visitors a unique combination of beautiful music and relaxing meditation. Each MMM event offers the participants an opportunity to enjoy a different combination of peaceful self-awareness through various kinds of meditation enhanced by the musical offerings.
The MMM experience is intended to be comforting, entertaining and spiritual but it is emphatically not a church service. It is held in the candle-lit sanctuary of the grand Meetinghouse, a place of gathering and welcoming for the entire Gloucester community for over 200 years. The Meetinghouse, whose lantern tower with a Paul Revere bell has guided generations of mariners safely into our harbor, is on the National Register of Historic Places. It is the oldest, largest and last surviving historic Meetinghouse in Gloucester.
The October event will feature meditation leader Janet Green with guitarist & balladeer Gerry Ryan. There will be a collation with light refreshments afterwards in the Entrance House, giving participants the opportunity to meet the leaders and each other in a convivial atmosphere.
Parking is allowed on the church green at the corner of Middle and Church Street, entering between the granite pillars but please be aware of the newly-installed granite benches. A free-will offering of $10 is requested but everyone is welcome regardless of financial capability. The Sanctuary is accessible with facilities for persons with disabilities via the side entrance at 10 Church Street.
MEDITATION LEADER:
Janet Green Garrison, M. Ed., R.Y.T., CADAC, Founder and Director of Yoga for Health
Janet began teaching Hatha Yoga forty years ago and named her practice Yoga for Health because of her personal experience with the healing powers of yoga. Within six months of regularly practicing the yoga asanas, or postures, Janet stopped smoking, lost weight, changed her diet from junk food to health food and felt as though she had found a path that could guide her through whatever challenges life had to offer. The positive changes in her body, mental attitude and spiritual beliefs were undeniable and inspired her to pursue further training and become a yoga instructor.
Janet completed the 6 week Teacher Training Program with Swami Vishnudevananda in 1973 and the White Lotus Teacher Certification Program in Santa Barbara in 1994. Each year she continues her studies with various renowned Iyengar, Bikram, Kripalu and Sivananda instructors and maintains a personal practice that feeds the wealth of experience that her teaching comes from. Her classes are an eclectic blend of Hatha Yoga styles reflecting her continued study with instructors such as Rodney Yee, Angela Farmer, Erich Schiffmann, and Gayna Uransky.
Janet is also a Certified Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselor and has led therapeutic groups at local substance abuse clinics for two decades. She is a popular speaker on the benefits and pleasures of yoga, and hosts ” Yoga For Health ” on Cape Ann Cable Access Television, Channel 12, Thursdays, 8:30 to 9:00 pm. She maintains her practice as a teacher and guide from her Lanesville studio.

MUSIC & MEDITATION IN THE MEETINGHOUSE “Gerry Ryan – an acoustic guitar player from Massachusetts who is well known throughout coffeehouses, clubs and festivals throughout New England.” – Boston.com
For most of his adult life, Gerry Ryan has been chasing the musical muse, learning and writing songs in a wide range of styles… folk, country blues, western swing, rock, ballads … songs that explore topics snatched from the ledger of life. He has performed his songs wherever lovers of acoustic music gather — coffeehouses, clubs, and camps, festivals — and any place good songs are welcome.
Based on the North Shore, Ryan is a singer/songwriter who performs solo as well as in the popular trio, Ryan, Ortolani & Fleming. In performances, you will hear catchy original tunes, American classics, country blues, and songs from the Celtic traditions. have received airplay on WUMB-FM in Boston and on other popular folk and acoustic programs on radio and the internet stations across the country.
As a solo act and with Ryan, Ortolani & Fleming, he has featured several times at Geoff Bartleyâs singer/songwriter nights at the Cantab Lounge in Cambridge and performed at the Nameless Coffee House in Cambridge, the Me & Thee Coffee House in Marblehead, the Linden Tree Coffee House in Wakefield, the Amazing Things Coffee House in Framingham and the Parish Center for the Arts in Westford, the Beal House in Kingston and many other venues.

Nichole’s “Family Picks of the Weekend” November 22nd and 23rd
Ok, peeps.  I’m giving you one Schrafft family faithful field trip in case you’re not up for anything big, but my other two picks involve going over the bridge.  Not just that bridge….but, also the big bridge.  We’re talking The Tobin Bridge, people.
So, Pick #1
If you’ve never gone, you should. Â Wolf Hollow.
If you or your kids aren’t up for learning, this isn’t for you. Â I didn’t mean that in a snarky way…I meant it for real. Â Wolf Hollow is no zoo. Â Your children should be of an age where they’ll feel like sitting and listening to a fabulous and informative talk about the wolves while watching them romp and play in their large enclosure. Â For a couple more weekends they are open for Saturday and Sunday presentations, but starting in December they only do Sundays. Â Ticket sales begin at 1:00 and shows are at 1:30. My boys “adopted” Bear and Angus and they’ve become a part of the family.
Pick #2
Saturday afternoon check out the “Free Day of Holiday Fun For the Whole Family” at the Citi Performing Arts Center Wang Theatre in Boston from 11-2. Cookie decorating, face painting, photos with Globe Santa, lots of arts and crafts, Legoland Discovery Center activities, a live holiday performance, and more!
A great event to kick off your holiday season!
Pick #3
AND talk about kick starting the holidays!!!! Â The annual lighting of the Christmas Tree in Faneuil Hall also takes place on Saturday! Â As a huge bonus, if you’ve ever wondered what 350,000 LED lights look like, you’ll be in luck, because it’s also the first night of BLINK “A light and sound Extravaganza” featuring music of the Holiday Pops!Â
Stroll through Quincy Market and Faneuil Hall, get a bit to eat, drink some hot cocoa, listen to the music, and be amazed by the lights… and then count down as the huge Christmas Tree gets lit for the new holiday season. Â Does it get any more festive?

Let’s rally around Paul, who needs our support to help battle his fight against cancer.
Paul Russo is from Gloucester, and frankly one of the nicest people you can meet. After graduating from Gloucester High School as a Captain of his hockey team, he took his bright mind and talent to Bryant University where he studied Accounting and received his Bachelors degree. While at Bryant he also shined on the schools Club Hockey team where he became Captain again. Paul then went on to earn his Masters in Accounting from UMass Lowell and accepted his current job at PwC in Boston.
This past Halloween morning, Paul suffered two seizures and was taken to Lahey Medical. Paul was diagnosed with Brain Cancer the following day. Just like many of us who are fighting to pay school loans, Paul could use support with now helping with his medical expenses for surgery and treatment.

The Cape Ann Museum is pleased to present Lighthouses of Cape Ann, an illustrated talk with New England lighthouse expert Jeremy DâEntrement, on Saturday, November 29 at 3:00 p.m. This program is free for members or with Museum admission.
Jeremy DâEntremont has been photographing and writing about lighthouses for the past 30 years. He is the author of hundreds of articles and more than a dozen books on lighthouses and maritime history, including The Lighthouse Handbook: New England and Great Shipwrecks of the Maine Coast. He has been recognized as the leading expert on New Englandâs historic lighthouses and has appeared on the History Channel, the Travel Channel, Public Television, and National Public Radio speaking on the topic. He is the historian for the American Lighthouse Foundation and the founder of Friends of Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouses. Jeremy’s presentation will focus on the rich history of the lighthouses of Newburyport, Ipswich, and Cape Ann, with an emphasis on the human interest stories of lighthouse keepers and their families. The presentation will be illustrated by historic images and Jeremy’s own recent photos.
The Cape Ann Museum recently completed stabilization and installation of the first order Fresnel lens originally housed in the south lighthouse tower on Thacher Island off Rockport. The project was a collaborative one, done with the Thacher Island Association. In 1861, first order Fresnel lenses, made in Paris, were installed in the newly constructed lighthouse towers on Thacher Island. The lenses remained in place until 1980 when they were decommissioned and removed from the Island; just one of the twoâthe lens in the south lighthouseâwas preserved. Recently, the United States Coast Guard has been sending these magnificent lenses back to the communities where they were originally used to be preserved within museum settings. The gallery in which the lens is now permanently installed includes a mixture of artifacts and interpretative materials designed to help visitors appreciate the beauty and power of the lens along with the history of Thacher Island. In addition to the first order lens a smaller fourth order Fresnel lens, originally installed in the lighthouse at Eastern Point, is also on exhibition. Jeremy DâEntrementâs lecture is one of many that the Museum hopes to offer related to the newly acquired Fresnel lens.

Joey,
Guess I’m up before you this morning. I don’t see any lights on in your office, from my vantage point.
Many readers of GMG may already know about Tricia O’Neill’s terrific mural downtown. What an exemplary illustration of public art in Gloucester. Next year I think another mural should be done on Charles Olson. This is the product of a SeArts Partner with an Artist Grant that Tricia forwarded with the help of the Gloucester Writers Center. Jack down at Palazola’s and the Pilot House contributed the brick canvas. The poem chosen for the mural is called THE THEORY OF POETRY. It is the epigram from KNOW FISH, Vincent’s first volume of his epic poem on Gloucester. So already there are two businesses and two non-profits collaborating. Add to that Tricia and her husband and artist Steve Brettler, two artists who painstakingly created the mural.
The video combines the work of few more Glocuester Artists: a striking image of the bard by cartoonist, illustrator and writer Tony Millionaire, a haunting and rocking sound track by Willie Loco Alexander, time lapses by Eliot Francesa, drone footage by Martin Del Vecchio, photography by Hank Nahamkin and a good bit of slicing and dicing by your neighbor cross Cripple Cove. The mural and the video bring back Vincent words into the life of the city today. See for yourself if you have not.

Hello,
GHS Theatre’s production of “Chemical Imbalance: A Jekyll and Hyde play” written by Lauren Wilson is this weekend! I was hoping you would be able to mention it on Good Morning Gloucester, as we received a lot of responses directly from your readers regarding the advertising and sponsorship!
The play is a darkly comic adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. In Victorian England, repressed impulses burst their corsets as Dr. Jekyll’s experiments in the nature of evil threaten to reveal the bloody hands beneath the gloves of the British.
Performances are Friday, November 21 at 7pm, Saturday November 22nd at 2pm & 7pm, and Sunday November 23rd at 2pm. Tickets are available online through PayPal or at the door (cash or cards through PayPal.) Students and Seniors are $5 and Adults are $10.
I’ve attached some photos from our dress rehearsal last night, taken by our technical assistant, Joshua Fay.
Photo 1127 shows Jessalyn Silveira as Plodget, the cook, and Danielle Bauke as Ivy, the maid, eavesdropping on Jekyll as he discusses his evil potion.
Photo 1047 depicts the dinner party hosted by Euphronia Jekyll (Mikayla Healey – bottom right.) Standing is Genevieve Healey as Ambrosia Jekyll and Hayden Cushing as Xavier Utterson. Below the table (L-R) is Joshua Flynn as Henry Jekyll, Jessyca Muniz as Rosamunda Dewthistle, Madison Smith as Calliope Throckmortonshire, and Mikayla Healey as Euphronia Jekyll.
Photo 1007 shows (L-R) Jessyca Muniz as Rosamunda Dewthistle speaking with Joshua Flynn as Henry Jekyll, as Genevieve Healey (Ambrosia Jekyll) and Hayden Cushing (Xavier Utterson) look on.
Thank you so much!
