A01 Buoy Off Gloucester: A Bit Breezy

Wind speed 65 mph, now that is a bit breezy.

Wind gust to 84 mph. That is the highest I’ve ever seen on this buoy.

Wave height climbed to 22 feet and then has been “NA” since 4AM. NA probably means “not applicable” but I have a feeling the indicator crapped its pants.

Water temp 41F at the surface. 41 F all the way down to 50 meters. Well mixed.

The wind is straight out of the north. High tide is at 5PM today. Lock 4WD and I might go see how Motif #1 is handling the waves coming straight in off Sandy Bay.

Stella can’t get out of the house on the lee side with a four foot drift against the door. On the windward side bare grass and she took a leak but poopies are not a possibility when the wind is blowing up her skirt at 65 mph.

 CODE RED – Issued at 10:00 am on Monday, January 26, 2015

 Good morning.  This is Mayor Sefatia Romeo Theken with an important message from the City of Gloucester’s code red emergency messaging system. 

 Effective at 5:00 pm today, Monday, January 26th, the city has declared a snow emergency and parking ban on all city streets due to the arriving snow storm. 

 From 5:00 pm on Monday, January 26th, until 1:00 pm on Wednesday, January 28th,  all vehicles are banned from parking on city streets.  

 Violators of this emergency declaration are subject to ticketing and towing at the owners expense.  Residents may park in all municipal and school parking lots. 

 All residents are reminded that they are responsible for clearing snow from sidewalks adjacent to their property.  Your cooperation during this parking ban is necessary for efficient and safe snow removal efforts.  Please make every effort to shovel out hydrants at or near your homes.

 During times of high tide, expect coastal flooding on various streets along the coast.

Gloucester Public Schools are closed on Tuesday, January 27th.  The Superintendent of Schools will update parents accordingly on the status of school by Wednesday morning.

 There will be no trash collection on Tuesday, January 27th.  Trash collection will be one day late.

 To repeat, the city of Gloucester has issued a parking ban on all city streets as of 5:00 pm on Monday, January 26th.  The ban shall be in effect until 1:00 pm on Wednesday, January 28th.

Yep, it’s pure chaos out here at the “Ghetto Shaw’s ” today because of Blizzard 2015. It’s 10:30 am, and simply too late to prepare for the worst. I would suggest going to the “Gucci” Shaw’s, or the “Beverly Hills Basket” where I hear is the only place to for for essentials.

No chance at the deli.

The end of the eggs.

Dairy is all but gone.

Wow, it’s a rat race.

Need a brush or shovel? Nope.

And the check out lines? INSANE! Backed all the way up to the crappy tabloid zines!

Who’s ghetto now? You can stand in line like the gubment is handing out cheese, or come to the hood and grab a few things. Thank you “South Side Shaw’s” for making my day!

BREAKING STORM INFO FROM #GLOUCESTERMA Police Chief Campanello

Hey Joey,

Attached you will find a hard copy of the Code Red message that will be going out from the Mayors Office shortly. I have some additional comments I’d like to pass onto your readers:

The coming storm is very likely to significantly impact our City. Heavy and prolonged snow and very strong winds will bring about power outages and flooding, and will make our streets dangerous and impassable for a significant period of time. Gloucester Police/Fire and Emergency Management will be opening an Emergency Operations Center this evening through Wednesday morning to coordinate emergency planning and response.

As noted in the Code Red, there is NO SCHOOL tomorrow and a decision will be forthcoming on whether school will be open on Wednesday as the storm progresses. There is a Parking Ban in effect from 5PM MONDAY to 1PM WEDNESDAY. This may be adjusted if possible, but as of now, any vehicle parked on a public street during those times will be subject to tagging and towing. School parking lots and municipal lots will be open to accommodate vehicles but you are responsible for digging out around your car. IF school opens on Wednesday, the vehicles will need to removed by 6am Wednesday. If not, they will need to be removed by 1pm.

There will be no trash collection Tuesday.

All City events, including school sports and meetings are cancelled from 8pm tonight through 3pm Wednesday.

The DPW will be working continuously to keep streets cleared. Keep in mind this storm will very likely overcome even the best efforts by DPW and that major roads will be a priority first followed by secondary roadways.

If long term sheltering is needed, contact the Red Cross. If short term warming stations are needed in an emergency, Addison Gilbert Hospital will have its café open, the Police Station will be available, as well as several other locations.

We crucially need the residents cooperation during this storm in terms of parking and staying OFF the roadways. DO NOT travel during this storm until it is safe to do so. If you have an emergency, contact 911. We want safety to be our first priority. Please check on your neighbors, especially if they are seniors or housebound and please try to keep your sidewalks clear. DO NOT shovel snow into the roadway as this impedes clearing operations and is a fineable action.

If you experience a power outage, contact National Grid at 1-800-465-1212. If you experience a natural gas issue please contact them at 1-800-640-1595.

If we can be of any assistance, please do not hesitate to contact us. Please stay safe and indoors for this storm.

What Do You Get When You Cross a Kayak and a Paddle Board?

Brilliant!   This is what you get when you cross a kayak and a paddle board….

a KYPAD….and it is awesome!

If you have kids who love being on the water, you should really check these out.

I have to brag and say that they are the brainchild of a friend of mine….and some of her close friends.  They dreamt of the idea while watching their kids struggling with some larger kayaks and boards.  They researched, designed, built….dreamed some more….and then executed the millions of steps and details that go into creating something as excellent as a Dream Come True. And, of it all, came the KYPAD.  You can bet that as soon as they’re in the budget the Schrafft boys will be on one of these.  They are incredibly light so that the kiddos can lug them themselves.  A huge bonus.  They can be used as a stand-up paddle board or the kids can take advantage of the cut-out seat and foot grooves for really steady sit-down paddling.  Win-win.

Meeting on Proposed Sculpture at Solomon Jacobs Park is CANCELLED

City Councilor Paul McGeary writes:

Dear friends:

Due to the likelihood of severe weather this evening, the ward meeting that was to have been held at Maritime Gloucester concerning the proposal to erect a sculpture by the renowned artist David Black at Solomon Jacobs Park has been CANCELLED.

Councilor Melissa Cox and I will work with the Committee for the Arts to reschedule the meeting soon. We will let you know when a date has been set.

While we’re on the topic, here are some things to think about as we prepare for the storm:

  • Pay attention to the city website for updates on things like parking bans and school closures. While you’re at it, you may register for the city’s “Code Red” telephone call alert system at this web location: http://www.gloucester-ma.gov/index.aspx?nid=384
  • In particular check before you put out your trash and recycling tonight. Pickup may be problematic or cancelled entirely tomorrow.
  • Stay off the Back Shore and the beaches. Everyone is awed by the power of the sea, but this is a dangerous storm. We don’t need our emergency responders taxed by having to rescue those who stray too close to danger.
  • Check on neighbors who are elderly or infirm. If you can help them prepare for the storm or during the storm, I’m sure they will appreciate it.

The city will make every effort to keep you updated as events warrant. Stay off the roads and in your homes and most of all, BE SAFE.
