A Visit To Second Glance

Something about a bright shiny New Year makes me want to change things up at the house with furniture or household goods (I’m keeping GMG Jim around) so we took a ride to Second Glance on Pond Road for a look around. There happened to be a BIG furniture sale going on and the place was hopping at both stores. Others have similar things on their minds apparently……anyhow, though we didn’t find anything that sparked an interest this time, I am always impressed by the variety and reasonable pricing. PLUS purchases support the Open Door services so it’s a win-win.

Get Salty with the Sawyer Free Library and The Open Door!

 ~ SAWYER FREE LIBRARY ~

Join us on Saturday, January 25 from 10:30 AM to 12:00 PM at the Sawyer Free Library (21 Main Street)for a fun, family-friendly popcorn party. While your popcorn pops, decorate a festive snowman bag and then create your own custom salty seasoning blend. It’s the perfect winter snack!

This popcorn extravaganza with the Library and The Open Door is part of the 4th Annual Gloucester’s So Salty Festival—a city-wide celebration of Gloucester’s famously salty character. Hosted by the Cape Ann Museum in partnership with local cultural institutions and businesses, this exciting weekend features ice sculptures, live music, salty treats, free art activities for kids, and much more. You won’t want to miss it!

While you’re at the Library, don’t forget to learn how you can save money and energy this winter. Home Works Energy will be on-site from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM to help you sign up for a no-cost home energy assessment through the Mass Save Program.

These events—and the whole So Salty festival—is free and open to the public, so bring your friends and family for a taste of Gloucester’s saltiest delights!

For questions about these or any Library community program and events visit sawyerfreelibrary.org, call 978-325-5500 or stop by the Sawyer Free’s temporary Library space at 21 Main Street in Gloucester.

Winter fun

On Saturday and Sunday, Stage Fort Park was full of fun.  Lots of kids sledding and enjoying the snow.

At Niles Pond, a hockey game was happening.  I love the photo of the little girl with her hockey stick ready to play.  The ice sailing looks like lots of fun.

Here’s a collection of Gloucester promos for Gloucester’s So Salty Jan 25&26

As more come in I’ll add them to the mix!

From Cape Ann Museum:

Free and open to the public
Celebrate the fish city’s recognizably salty character with local cultural institutions and businesses during the 4th Annual Gloucester’s So Salty festival on January 25 and 26, 2025 from 10:00 am – 5:00 pm! Over 1,800 people came out last year to share their salty pride while enjoying free ice sculptures and cultural activities around Downtown Gloucester.
The Cape Ann Museum is partnering with Discover Gloucester and several local cultural institutions and businesses to offer two full days of free programming in the coldest part of the year. Inspired by the annual Salem’s So Sweet event, this two-day event will include ice sculptures, live music, salty treats, free kids’ art activities, and much more.

Please send me your promos and I’ll add you.

Way more programming to be announced in the coming days!

Jalapenos for Dinner and Fund Raising

We joined friends for dinner at Jalapenos on Main St to take part in a fundraiser being held for the GHS Girls Ice Hockey team. As always, we were greeted warmly and seated in our preferred location. Menus were presented and drink orders taken by our server Autumn. Our friends were delayed in arriving but the staff remained patient and attentive despite the crowd building to support the fundraiser. We are very appreciative of Jalapenos efforts to assist local organizations in their efforts and we try to attend as many of these events as we can. We ALWAYS see friends and acquaintances when we go there and the food is very good. I had the steak fajitas, Jim had the shrimp tacos and our friends had the nacho plate with pulled pork. See you soon at Jalapenos!

So, What’s New? — pat morss

Catching up on 2025.

This is as far south as the sun got at the Winter Solstice – now it’s headed north again!
Our resident Norwegian gnomes helped us usher in the New Year.
A lapse in flag etiquette. It’s been blowing hard.
Two otters playing in open water at the far side of Niles Pond, which is icing over.
Eiders are comfortable in the warmer ocean, that’s creating cold-air sea smoke.
We got some snow, making the deer (L) in the Audubon sanctuary easier to spot.
Mother and kids foraging in the snow, yesterday.
A buck is vigilant, not far away.
‘Sea Challenger,’ the wind turbine platform, ghosts by silently in the snowfall.
Snow is just another day for Gloucester fishermen, headed out.
Gulls and Mallards congregate around a remaining opening in the ice at Niles Pond.
Wet snow compromised the smooth ice today, but skaters and hockey players made do.

Rockport BRewing Company To Launch New Venue Soon

On its Facebook page, the Rockport Brewing Company has done the math for us: 135 steps from the train platform to the soon-to-open venue at the site of the former Whale’s Jaw Cafe on Railroad Ave in Rockport. The first brewery established in Rockport, the new venue will contain seating, a display area for art and a music area when it (hopefully) opens late this month or early February. We went a took a peak. Looking forward to this opening!
