Mayoral Debate & Business After Hours Events
Register for the Mayoral Debate
On Tuesday, October 20, the Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce will host a Mayoral Candidates Debate between the two finalists for Gloucester Mayor in the November 3 city elections, City Council President Paul McGeary and interim Mayor Sefatia Romeo Theken.
The debate will be held at The Elks at Bass Rocks on 101 Atlantic Road in Gloucester, MA from 7:30 to 9:00 am. This event will be open to Chamber members and the general public and will be moderated by Bob Gillis, Vice President of Cape Ann Savings Bank. The candidates will answer a number of questions on a range of topics and each candidate will have the opportunity pose a question to the other.
Tickets are $25.00 per person and include a light breakfast and attendance for the debate.

Join the Friends of Dogtown to kick off a weekend celebrating Dogtown!
The Cape Ann Museum is pleased to present, in collaboration with the Gloucester Lyceum and Sawyer Free Library, a day dedicated to all things Dogtown on Saturday, October 17 from 1:00p.m. to 3:00p.m. Hear from expert panelists on topics ranging from artists inspired by Dogtown to the geology of Dogtown and everything in between. Dogtown Days is a celebration of the art, history, archaeology, geology, ecology and mystery of Dogtown, from the remains of its colonial settlement to its treasures along the trails through the watershed land and glacial heaths that lie at the heart of Cape Ann. Its 3,000 acres serve as the inspiration for Saturday’s panelists: Mark Carlotto, Mary Ellen Lepionka, Ed Becker, Chris Leahy, Ted Tarr, Noel Mann, Shep Abbott and Tom Halsted. Join these Friends of Dogtown as they explore the cellars of Dogtown, the Native Americans who lived there and the many insects and birds that call the habitats of Dogtown their home.
Following the Dogtown expert panel discussion, the Friends of Dogtown invite all audience members to join them for a reception with cake and ale in the Friend Room at the Sawyer Free Library nearby.

with the opening of his exhibition titled “Gulls” on Sunday, October 18th at 2pm.
Inspired by a book passage describing a seagull as a bird with long slender wings that feeds on fish, shell fish, crustaceans and garbage, Paul has observed the birds in flight and dining in parking lots on trash making note of their splendor and their ability to scavenge. Paul was inspired by these birds of character and their abundance and permanence in Cape Ann. Works on view will cover a variety of mediums where you can enjoy these magnificent creatures in action and at rest.
To see these works and the exhibition in its entirety, please visit the RAA at its 12 Main Street campus. As always, the Association for this show is open and free to the public.

If you haven’t heard yet, we need to let you in on a little secret: Latitude 43 now has some serious heaters (trust us, these things are legit) so you can dine on their deck all year long. Picture it: Sipping cocktails and enjoying sushi, under the awing, while the snow literally falls around you.

Tracking the Great Chesapeake Bay Schooner Race (GCBSR)
The GCBSR starts Thursday October 15th at 1330. Each boat carries a transponder and can be tracked via the website link below. The race course is 127 miles straight down the Chesapeake from Annapolis to Thimble Shoal Light off Hampton Roads. Participating schooners that have raced in Gloucester include Adventure (MD). Adventurer 65, Apella, Liberty Clipper, Light Reign, Malabar II, Norfolk Rebel, Pride of Baltimore II, Summerwind and When and If. Another fantastic option for this wonderful fall weekend is the 50th Head of the Charles Regatta! Other than the obvious farm tour and apple picking, I’m not sure if there is another annual tradition that screams “Fall in Massachusetts” as loudly as the Head of the Charles. Gloucester Stage proudly presents the world premiere of Lucas Baisch’sA Measure of Normalcy from October 22 through November 1 at 267 East Main Street, Gloucester, MA. A Measure of Normalcy follows an array of lost souls as they straggle inside a quickly emptying Midwestern mini-mall. Filled with balloon animals, cartoon flashbacks, cheap raps, and hallucinogenic gecko feces, this dark comedy questions what it means to be “normal” in a place of overwhelming simplicity. In his Gloucester Stage directorial debut David R. Gammons directs a cast featuring Ellen Colton, Lydia Barnett-Mulligan, Gabriel Graetz, Sarah Elizabeth Bedard and Eliott Purcell. Lucas Baisch’s A Measure of Normalcy runs October 22 through November 1 at Gloucester Stage. Performances areWednesday through Saturday at 7:30 pm and Saturday and Sunday at 2:00 pm. Following the 2 pm performances on Sunday October 25 and November 1 audiences are invited to free post show discussions with the artists from A Measure of Normalcy. Only two braved the rough seas and ferocious wind last Sunday to complete the annual Oarmaster’s Cup race off of Maritime Gloucester and out around Ten Pound Island. It was an exciting race with several lead changes and some savvy drafting off the island which produced a new champion with Jimmy T.(right) beating Erik Dombrowski (left) to regain the cup!

Pork Loin-Cheap and Underrated On The Que
Started out with a 2 lb pork loin on the pit, setting it up using the snake method. I learned something on this cook as I only lit 10 briquettes instead of a whole chimney and lit the fuse on one end letting it work it’s way around the perimeter of the kettlewhile having the cast iron pan set up with some atomic buffalo turds and triple smoked bacon which I’d let go for an hour or so to get all that good bacon fat into the pan for the brussel sprouts that I’d put on when the internal temp of the pork was 10 degrees away from when I wanted to pull it off (130 degrees). Brussel sprouts are cheap and so damn easy to cook and delish! After pulling the buffalo turds off there was a nice coating of bacon fat to cook the brussel sprouts in. The baked potato went he same time as the pork loin.
After I pulle th eloin and the baked potato I let he loin rest for a half hour to let the juices redistribute throughout the loin. Then cut up pork slices to put on a potato bun with a sauce that is my new favorite- Trader Joe’s Carolina Gold. Look for it!

Driving past the Essex Salt Marsh during Tuesday’s dissipating fog, I could not help but stop to take a panorama. The view reminded me of a photo from this past March 12th, a sight I’m not quite ready to embrace. Can’t it be warm and balmy for another month, oh please Weather Goddess, just one more month!

Almost worth having knee surgery
Sista Felicia is the best. She is so considerate and thoughtful, she brought Rick and I a wonderful and yummy meal on Wednesday night since my knee is the size of an elephant’s knee. Felicia brought over, butter squash soup, salad, bread and a wonderful salad. Thank you so much our friend.
